toshk··on Why have female animals evolved such wild genitals?
Oh wait swans...
toshk··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
Google works great for most daily tasks software questions, looking for a service/company etc

But when I want to do serious research on things like eczema, diet, backpain, exercise. Google absolutely fails (also Google scholar) I have to buy books, go through Reddit, listen to YouTube lectures etc that point to the correct literature and then you get to know the experts, different opinions etc.

All you find is these generic sites with basic advice which is common knowledge lik WebMD. Not bad, but they dominate the entire search.

I would think a heavy version of Google focused on in depth/experts would be great.

toshk··on Ask HN: Do I have to host all data in the EU to comply with GDPR?
Yeah that's there arguing as well. Although local govs for some reason have no problem working with Azure.

EU cloud hosting companies however are not as mature as the big US players so makes it more of a pain.

toshk··on Ask HN: Do I have to host all data in the EU to comply with GDPR?
The whole situation is confusing for me. We set up a few project with kubernetes clusters for local governments in the Netherlands. They denied DigitalOcean because even though they have servers in Amsterdam, the company is in the US, so we went with a much higher priced custom K8s cluster from a local provider.

So not really sure if they were right, but according to them even just having your servers run by a US company is a potential legal risk with GDPR.

But at the same time other departments in the same organization run on Azure.

toshk··on The hardest thing about engineering is requirements
Not so much perfect spec. But hidden assumptions
toshk··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Works for some, but body will try to go back to it's habits, can be very hard to change food habits.

Easy hack that gives more energy & has health benefits is: Strength training for muscle growth. Muscles burn tons of energy, having more muscle mass will boost your daily resting kcal.

When starting out it's easy to gain quite a bit of muscle first months.

Ofc cut out the shit, mainly sweets & fried stuff.

toshk··on China to provide 5 mln yuan worth of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine
I don't think you understand how detail oriented they are. Even things as small as international student nights get cancelled at Chinese universities because any form of organization might lead to potential opposition. They simply try to oppose any form of organizing.

Same here. China won't even allow local western politicians to meet with a local Taiwenese politician (yes they have such influence, Amsterdam Politicians are not allowed to be on photo with Taiwenese politicians). 100% sure they care about the actions of such a prestigious institute as the Chinese Red cross.

toshk··on Solid.js feels like what I always wanted React to be
With Class components it was often easier to create Pure components, or do a shouldcomponent update check to optimize performace. They later introduced memo for functional components.
toshk··on Solid.js feels like what I always wanted React to be
When I started with classes, I hardly had to read the docs, few hours and was good to go. For many developers I worked with at the time this was the case.

React was easy coming from jQuery, Backbone other frameworks at the time.

With effects, i've read the docs many times. I still don't fully understand how it's supposed to work.

I don't seem to get the feeling / abstract concept behind it and it still surprises me at times when it fires / or not.

Too much magic for me. But maybe im getting old :).

toshk··on Italy gets its first unicorn as Scalapay raises $497M from Tencent
I understand your sentiment. And US has made a big mess in many places no doubt.

Yet please understand the view on individual rights in China is non-existent. Take for instance Guantanamo bay is child's play compared to treatment of:

- Falun Gong, they organ harvested their followers and sold their organs on the black market

- Entire Muslim population in Re-education camps + chemical sterilization

- Tibet as a people, country and culture is systematically being eradicated by a very well thought out strategy

And many more things happening.

And the imperial games the US played last 30 years. China is playing now, they have secretly taken over many African countries.

And if it wasn't for the military power of the US China would be much more blatant in taking over countries. Wether we like it or not, we need the US as a super power to balance out the others.

toshk··on Italy gets its first unicorn as Scalapay raises $497M from Tencent
You have no idea. Human lives mean nothing in China
toshk··on Italy gets its first unicorn as Scalapay raises $497M from Tencent
That's one thing. Chinese companies can't be seen as different from the government. You can blame the US for a lot of things, but it doesn't come close to the atrocities the Chinese government commits on a daily basis.
toshk··on No one cares about your redesign
This is why they bought it. Go back and check the interviews after the aquisition years ago. Whether you think that's realistic or not, Zuck doesn't care about things like gaming.
toshk··on No one cares about your redesign
Metaverse is the whole reason they bought VR in the first place.

The futuristic view is an realtime online community that mimmicks reality enough people actually enjoy spending time in it.

toshk··on The Cost of Financialization-Globalization: You Lost $500k and Gained $137.13
For US it's gone up, but massively is a bit of an overstatement. See the Gini Coeffecient which is often used for representing income equality: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient

UK seems worse, but other EU countries actually gone down, for instance France has had a big drop since the 50's.

toshk··on I changed my mind about advertising
Advertisement I would say on Google are more free then their "curated" search.

When ads for instance are not allowed on Google, all that's left is google's opinion on whats useful. Which is weirdly enough most likely less free and more opiniated.

toshk··on I changed my mind about advertising
Organic search is exactly that, a curator
toshk··on I changed my mind about advertising
So then what, you get curators like Google who become super powerful? Let governments manage it?
toshk··on JRE Missing (Rogan episodes removed by Spotify)
Might have to do with him using the n-word. He used to use it when describing/talking about the word in a few episodes. Someone went back and made a compilation of every time he did it. Here is his apology/explanation: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZlnH8MAb8L/
toshk··on What’s so hard about understanding consciousness?
From one of the dominant theories of a material view indeed an emergent behavior from an incredibly complex neural automata.

But from our daily experiences actually reality is an emergent property from our consciousness (or awareness).

What we do feel, smell, hear, forms into concept, meaning, experiences forms our "reality".

There might be a theoretical other "reality" or it might be a bit different many think it is now, but it doesn't make it more or less real, in the sense of actual experience it's less real.

toshk··on My self-hosting infrastructure, fully automated
What do you use for serving docker-compose?
toshk··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
"Natural" in an ambiguous that is impossible to define properly, yet it casts some morality on behaviour.

Anyway, the need for intoxicating itself seems to arise in more animals that have high developed cognitive abilities, Dolphins get high on passing around poisonous fishes, monkeys rub centipedes over their body and there are many more examples.

Mushrooms, smoking, fermented fruits and grains have been part of human lives for hundreds of thousands of years.

It seems that animals with high cognitive abilities feel the need to turn it off at times.

toshk··on Self-improvement is embracing your messy, imperfect life
It ends with a zen quote. The point of zen, and other form of buddhism is often misunderstood.

A simple way of describing one of the core teaching of buddhism is one of the main reason we suffer is: We are constantly neurotically pulling for what we want, and pushing away what we don't want.

It means as a juggles we are constantly trying to juggle our live into a state from where we think will be fullfilled. For example once I create this successful company, not feel hungry, then I will experience meaning satisfaction. Or when Im loved, or when I have a beer etc...

It's a never ending neurotic cycle. And the West is especially good at it by being extremely success focused.

Buddhism gives you tools to break this habit, and allows for meaning to be experienced in every moment (without this forced concept of YOU HAVE TO BE MINDFULL).

This doesn't mean you don't have all these personal things that should and can be improved, but the neurotic unhapiness leaves the experience of it.

It's often interesting to see intitially buddhist techniques, like meditations, being only used in a success/goal oriented mindset: will make you more productive, succesfull etc. where only a small benefit of the initial exercise remains.

toshk··on Ask HN: Good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
Customer.io seems closest!

Nobody else does this, I have like 100's of transactional use cases: - Trial almost ending - New signup - CC expired - Reminders, confirmations - Workouts affirmation, reminder etc.

etc.

A pain to write a proper rule system and keep overview in own application.

The challenge is not the simple emails / notifications. But to combine it with more complicated rules, and and + time conditinos

I have the events already in the system, would love to transfer them and have a stable UI / where I can add, create pause etc.

toshk··on Ask HN: Good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
Side question. Posthog describes an event pipeline. Is there a saas/open source server with event pipelines where you can do add logic to do things, like: send email, notifications, send api call, maybe add custom logic etc. Ive seen things like segment.io, but didn't find a straightforward solution.

Example: - if a user finished three workouts, send this notification. - if a user hasn't done a workout in a week remind them etc.

toshk··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
Of course people are done with it.

Vaccinations were sold as the solution to the pandemic.

Yet worldwide infections are going up at the same speed if not faster than before vaccinations. But no policy maker acknowledges this. They refer to the lowered death rate, or blame a new variant.

But it means that policy that gave people more freedom because of their vaccination status are not having any significant effect on decreasing the spread of the disease, they might even make it worse by allowing infectious people to mingle.

Therefore it's very unreasonable and authoritarian to not allow travel, shopping and even fire people over their vaccination status, when an individual decision clearly has a minimal effect on the collective.

Yet politicians are not budging but doubling down on vaccination policy, if there was any trust left in the integrity and capability of our leaders...

toshk··on How I took my SaaS from idea to sold in 14 months
Just some feedback! Because of your message here I read through, but just the intro and headline would have been too abstract for me and didn't solve anythings specific for me:

"Assemble a simple but powerful, fully functional codebase consisting of only what you need."

Maybe add a small list of features you supply out of the box? Auth, Subscription management, billing, etc...?

toshk··on YouTube is testing people now?
It boggles my mind how many scam ads are running on YouTube. Only ads I get are scams, make 5k a day, get rich quick with nft, fake investor ads etc. Google willingly make extreme amounts of money working with these scammers on the backs of ordinary people while already having billions. They are morally corrupt.
toshk··on Toddlers are harsh judges of moral character
Yes exactly. Some mainly need borders, others need to show how to go beyond.
toshk··on Toddlers are harsh judges of moral character
Of course.

But what OP refers to is that kids are born with their own personality which already emerges from a very young age in the first year.

I've seen it with my kids, and also other young kids in my close environment. For instance, some are just naturally extraverted, or wild, while others are careful by nature. Some of it changes when they get older, but a lot stays the same. So yeah environment matters, but most parents I talk to agree with me kids come with their own character.
