tormeh··on Furiosa: 3.5x efficiency over H100s
If you have an efficient chip you can just have more of them and come out ahead. This isn't a CPU where single core performance is all that important.
tormeh··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Maybe don't tell beginners to use something that will so easily break because you didn't read a wiki post. CachyOS is for the kind of gamer who'd de-bloat Windows, etc. to squeeze 1 fps more out of their hardware. If this isn't you then use something else.
tormeh··on Worst of breed software
Templated YAML - and all YAML eventually becomes templated - is so bad it makes me yearn for XML. We had it bad and we made it worse.
tormeh··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
I suspect that's an Nvidia problem. Never been an issue for me using AMD.
tormeh··on The Case for Nushell (2023)
I've tried the stock Windows shell and utilities. `ls` is noticeably slow in directories with like 15 subdirectories. That's not acceptable. Even the terminal emulator is so slow pasting 30 characters takes several frames. That's not too annoying, but I might replace it with Wezterm or something.

The stock Windows terminal experience is awful. Windows has improved markedly recently with `winget`, so maybe they'll get around to fixing the speed sometime, too.

tormeh··on Sergey Brin's Unretirement
If I became financially independent tomorrow I'd go straight to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gu%C3%A9delon_Castle to help build that. I don't think we've evolved to be healthy and idle. In retirement you can choose what to do, and volunteering on some nerdy construction project sounds amazing.
tormeh··on The Case for Nushell (2023)
If you're ever forced to use Windows, just install nushell. The speedup is wild, and along with it comes many nice quality of life features.

Nushell is good on the Unixes as well, but the defaults there are less annoying. I regularly revert to bash because there's just some thing I've memorized in bash, and bash doesn't make me want to scream.

Note that this is just my perspective on it as an interactive shell. I've never used it for scripting.

tormeh··on I wanted a camera that doesn't exist, so I built it
I have to say I'm a bit unimpressed with the efforts of the MFT consumer system camera manufacturers. Panasonic creates excellent cameras, they're so big it lessens the appeal of the smaller mount. OM makes cameras of the right size, but it's releasing new models really really slowly, with mediocre sensors. The OM-5 mark II is a lame rehash. Only the OM-3 is somewhat exciting, but it sacrifices too much in terms of ergonomics to achieve an aesthetic I don't care about.

On the other hand there's no other class of camera that really works on vacation/travel and is meaningfully better than a smartphone. Oh, well.

tormeh··on Why is the Gmail app 700 MB?
That's a lot of code, though. I can't imagine common libraries so big. The Linux kernel is less than 100mb.
tormeh··on Can I start using Wayland in 2026?
I've had to dive into xorg.conf more than once. Switched to Wayland as soon as it became an (experimental) option in Ubuntu and never looked back. Probably helps that I've always had AMD cards when running Linux, but it has been smooth sailing nonetheless. I can vaguely remember something not working under Wayland in the early days.. Maybe something with Wine or Steam? Anyway, that has to be 10 years ago now.
tormeh··on The Great Gatsby is the most misunderstood novel (2021)
If the meaning of the book and the intention of the author diverges then the author has done a bad job.

If you can interpret a book however you want, what's the point of reading? I can just reject the author's intended meaning and substitute my own, but I can do that without reading at all, so why bother?

tormeh··on Corroded: Illegal Rust
That's fascinating and insane. Rust will help, but I can't see that working well. In my experience LLMs (even Claude) need quite a bit of handholding.
tormeh··on Report: Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
Microsoft is the US military's biggest supplier. There is definitely a solution for this. And that solution is probably not available to regular users.
tormeh··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
Honestly I get the Xbox apathy. There's not that much profit in being what, third or fourth place? After Steam, Playstation and Nintendo? Depends how you define it, I guess, but to me they're in fourth place. Microsoft needs to either cut their losses or invest a ton of money. It looks like they will pick some weird thing in the middle, keeping Xbox on life support. Probably some unhappy compromise internally.
tormeh··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
Cosmic is quite nice. There's some polishing left to do, but it's already pretty solid. The app store is a bit of a turd, but I bet that's just because it's by nature connected to the internet. More could surely be done with caching and pre-loading, but not sure if I want my computer to pre-load app store content all the time just in case I open it.

Compared to Windows it's of course absolutely unreal.

tormeh··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
I have to use Windows sometimes at work, and of all indignities, this is surely a small one, but it is an indignity. Everyone complains about ads, which is a real issue, but to me the biggest issue is how blatantly suboptimal everything is. Nobody has put any effort into making Windows good for a very very long time. The terminal and/or powershell is incredibly slow - ls should not take perceptible time to execute. The settings menus are made with 3 to 5 different layers of UI frameworks and design guidelines. Forced OneDrive. The pestering about copilot... I even like LLMs, but my user experience is so clearly subordinate to some KPI that it annoys me anyway. I'm sure I could come up with more if I had touched it recently, but I thankfully haven't.
tormeh··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
Very much this. I bet the Xbox/games division would be up in arms about it, but they got told to spend less money and also not to bother the important people. The Windows people might care, but with how bad they've been shepherding the OS I'm not so sure.

Nadella is focused on AI and Azure. Bet he could hardly care less.

tormeh··on Linux is good now
Oh yeah, those are just problems you learn to live with. I guess these are as obvious to me as the Nvidia problems are to you.
tormeh··on I rebooted my social life
Absolutely. I think I might actually prefer this, somehow. It's very relaxed.

One thing that vexes me in dating women, however, is that it's hard to figure out what "type" of woman a woman is. I think men might be a bit easier to read at a glance.

tormeh··on I rebooted my social life
Have you tried getting meta about sports and video games? I don't care about sports, but I'll be interested if you talk to me about the business of sports clubs or the technicalities of stadiums. Video games have a lot going on around them: The lawsuits and general weirdness around how Disco Elysium was made is the stuff of several documentaries, for example.

Anecdotally, I'd say women are worse when it comes to interests. It's incredibly common that they just don't have any, which isn't the end of the world, oddly enough. There might be little to discuss, but drinking some wine, going to the movies or a gallery while having a pleasant conversation - these can be fine activities. Hard to turn it into a club, but on the other hand it's basically universal.

tormeh··on Linux is good now
Did you use the proprietary AMD drivers? You need to use the open source drivers. As far as I know these should be the default on all distros, so just click through the OS installer, install Steam, and start gaming. Don't touch the drivers.
tormeh··on Linux is good now
I think indies are safe. The potential problem I can see lying ahead - at least for me - is Battlefield.
tormeh··on Linux is good now
This really depends on the friends you have. I've never encountered this limitation because no one in my friend group plays competitive ranked games. Basically anything with private sessions doesn't require anticheat, so Valheim, RV There Yet, Deep Rock Galactic, etc. all work fine.
tormeh··on Resistance training load does not determine hypertrophy
Yeah, muscles are mostly about genetics, just like anything else. A mouse won't become a rhino by lifting. Humans are so incredibly genetically homogeneous that it can sometimes be tempting to ignore this, but even between humans the variability is quite large.
tormeh··on All-optical synthesis chip for large-scale intelligent semantic vision
Google is already there with TPUs. The reason they can add AI to every single google search is not just that Google has near-infinite cash, but also that inference costs far less for Google than anyone else.
tormeh··on Stardew Valley developer made a $125k donation to the FOSS C# framework MonoGame
Gifts do confer obligations. This is widely agreed upon in human society. If you ignore this there will be consequences, just no legal ones.
tormeh··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
For individuals, there's often a strong incentive to display certain beliefs, and the easiest way to do that consistently is to internalise them. The cost of voting for a bad party to you personally is zero. In other words, the government is a commons, and anyone can abuse it without consequence, but when we all do it...
tormeh··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
The US seems mostly healthy except for corruption skyrocketing. I don't even need to see the stats. If the president is this bad, and Americans overall think that's fine, then a lot of lower offices will soon be filled with corrupt officials. Attitudes shape incentives, and incentives shape behavior. Otherwise, both in terms of labor laws and capital markets, the US looks very healthy. But corruption in itself might create huge problems in the long term.
tormeh··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
I don't believe this is possible, even at Trump speed. It's much easier to wreck NATO than to reshape the world economy to that extent.
tormeh··on HSBC blocks its app due to F-Droid-installed Bitwarden
If you're an EU citizen you by definition have a permanent permit, until either your country of origin or host country leaves the EU. If you are not then woe be you, but that's a separate matter.
