torkelo··on Ask HN: What happened to grafana quality? Good alternatives?
Creator of Grafana here, would love to fix this. Grafana like most software is not immune to bloat over time (constant battle). Saying no to features requested by many users, esp ones implemented by the community contributed is one of the hardest things. Sometimes we get it wrong and add unnecessary features or add features that make everything else harder (a pet peeve of mine, and something always try to minimize).

I am curious

* Where are there 5 layers of nested scrollbars? * Where does Grafana override right click?

> alerting in which 80% of the alerts are 5xx errors or timeouts from grafana itself

That is strange, will have the alert team look into that. Not something I have seen in many issues reports. But I recall some timeout issues with more than 100K alert rules.

> The final nail in the coffin was waking up and all of a sudden my metrics are gone when my app hasn't changed at all. I'm tired of debugging it.

Grafana does not store any metrics, did you mean something else here?

> half broken features that is nearly impossible to use.

Any specifics would help and we can hopefully fix it.

Thanks for the feedback, we can fix many of this.

Not sure why _value is added, if the name of the series changed then the axis override does not have an effect and you need to assign axis again.

We hope so, a UI for placing buttons and hooking up graphics to metrics is in the works.

Do you prefer the more darker grays in v7.x?
torkelo··on Grafana Tempo, a scalable distributed tracing system
can you report an issue on github for this and how to replicate? We have no reports of this scroll jumping and that sounds super annoying and something we want to fix asap.

Thanks!

Thank you!

The reason is we want to move alert rules out of the dashboard. To be their own thing, have their own UI & workflow for editing and updating.

Once that is done, we plan to add the ability to link an alert rule to 1 or more dashboard panels.

torkelo··on Grafana Labs raises $24M
Yes, it's a known issue. We will try to fix in patch release next week.
torkelo··on Grafana Labs raises $24M
Not currently but will coming in a release soon (6.6 I hope). A super important feature that we should have added a long time ago.

torkelo··on Grafana Labs launches new Grafana.com site
Today is a momentous day for the Grafana project and for raintank, the company behind Grafana. We’re rebranding as Grafana Labs, and announcing something we’ve been working on for the better part of a year: GrafanaCloud. We are also merging our website sites into https://grafana.com We are also launching a community site for everything metrics & monitoring related on https://community.grafana.com

torkelo··on Grafana 3.0 Stable Released
Grafana is mainly built around time series databases that have good roll ups and are usually quite fast. Graphite queries usually only take 50-150ms (except some rare cases). This is changing a bit with newer slower time series databases that don't have good roll ups or are generally slow.

The main problem with prefetching or doing delta fetches is that some queries depend on the whole time range to execute (like moving average, integral, derivate).

torkelo··on Grafana 2.5 Released – Cloudwatch support
For people who do not know what Grafana is. Grafana is a highly popular open source web application for visualizing time series metrics. Used mainly in infrastructure and application monitoring and analytic's but also in many other areas.

Grafana supports reading metrics from many of the most popular time series databases like Graphite, InfluxDB and OpenTSDB. This release also adds support to use Elasticsearch, Cloudwatch and Prometheus as data sources.

Could you move that project to github? I think that project has great potential coupled with Grafana.

I will add windows builds to the install and download pages today.

Here is a windows build for grafana 2.0.1 https://s3.amazonaws.com/grafanarel/winbuilds/dist/grafana-2...

interesting! I am working on a windows build of grafana 2 right now. Does statsify have a /render and /metrics/find api that is compatible with graphite? If it had grafana could use it.

ELK is about log analytics, Grafana is about Time series & metric analytics and monitoring. The difference might not seem that big but currently it quite a big difference.

Time series are usually more about being able to collect huge amount of metrics. Metrics that can then be combined, averaged, filtered, put through a processing pipeline (analytical functions), summarized by different intervals. All in order to visualize (usually through graphs) recent live trends or long term trends and statistics.

Grafana is all about maximizing the power and ease of use of the underlying time series store so the user can focus om on building informative and nice looking dashboards. It is also about letting users define generic dashboards through variables that can be used in metric queries, this allows users to reuse the same dashboard for different servers, apps or experiments as long as the metric naming follows a consistent pattern.

Grafana also uses Elasticsearch but not for log analytics, but for annotating graphs with event/log information. At some point in in the coming 1-3 years log analytics and metric analytics & visualization is going to converge and be solved/addressed by the same piece of software. But that is tricky right now without sacrificing either domain.

That is awesome (that the upgrade was that smooth).

Its a dashboard and graph composer for realtime and and historical metric analytic (mostly via rich graphs). Usually used for monitoring or application metrics analytic but can be used in many other scenarios as well.

The delay could be because you are far from New York where the graphite server is. But I am as well (in Stockholm), the delay is between 200ms-600ms for me. then maybe 100ms for the canvas rendering.

Also the delay is higher than usual now because the demo site is busy now with the release announcement and lots of traffic from hacker news and twitter.

The rendering is very fast, switching dashboards can be under between 500ms-2 seconds. Just zooming on on the graph and you have a fast metric store is usually almost instant.

Thanks for spotting that, fix in publishing now!

This is probably because you are running Graphite 0.9.12 which does not have the maxDataPoints feature for the json api, with 0.9.13 it work a lot better. I know of some who run it on raspberry with decent performance, not great but far from 90 seconds.
