Greed is a complex and consuming emotion, don't underestimate it's ability to ensare people.

Me neither, I am feeling perplexed.
torbjorn··on The 8000th Busy Beaver number eludes ZF set theory (2016)
I find this article hard to understand since there is so much about this topic space (set theory, computational complexity, etc) that I don't know! How do I get to place there I can whiz through this kinda stuff?

Any recommendations for books or youtube videos?

torbjorn··on Ask HN: Are there any online trainings worth paying for?
Yes. I do feel like I legitimately learned, that I didn't just get some certificate that I had to jump through arbitrary hoops for.

Of course you get out of it what you put into and paying money to learn seems to be a good motivator to learn etc.

torbjorn··on Ask HN: Are there any online trainings worth paying for?
I took Udacity's Deep Learning Foundations nanodegree, that combined with a significant amount of github-as-resume legwork (plus two years sysadmin exp) landed me a job as a data engineer/analytics developer at a fortune 1000 company. Not bad considering my bachelor's is basically an agro-ecosystem design degree.

So I'd say it was worth the ~400 bucks.

torbjorn··on Ask HN: Those making over $300k/year, how did you achieve it?

torbjorn··on Three girls, a dead raccoon, and a crockpot
I am hoping it is not that blogs are going away, just that the growth of social media is dramatically outpacing it.

I don't have any data but I wonder if the amount of independent blogs is quietly and slowly growing. Maybe it is just my wishful thinking-they really are a great internet medium.

torbjorn··on Who Killed the Junior Developer?
I think he is referring to people entering the field now. If they don't have internships then it will be hard for them to compete with others vying for Junior Dev positions that have done internships.
torbjorn··on [dead]
The only magazine I read is The Week.
torbjorn··on Haemophilia A trial results 'mind-blowing'
One of the reasons haemophilia appears to be more treatable by gene therapy (than other diseases) is because the cells that should be producing the clotting factors are found in the liver. When virus carrying the gene therapy enters the blood it is collected by the liver's filtration mechanisms, conveniently aggregating the gene therapy in the tissue that the gene therapy is targeting.

It is hard to target gene therapy toward specific cells/tissues but the liver makes targeting haemophilia with gene therapy easier.

torbjorn··on Project Euler
Wow, that sounds like an awesome party =)
torbjorn··on Using a logbook to improve your programming
What the author says about aliases in the bashrc being evaluated only once when the bashrc is run when the shell session is opened is wrong.

Go ahead and try this:

Put,

    alias lb='vim ~/logbook/$(date "+%s")'
in your bashrc.

Source the bashrc.

Run the lb command. It creates a new file with a different epoch timestamp each time. This `lb` command doesn't need to be a bash function. It can be an alias and work just fine.

Maybe how this works in zsh is different...

torbjorn··on Tim Ferris comments on his move from Silicon Valley
Reminds me of when I meet new people in a "night out" type context and it feels like everyone vying to work in different forms of status signaling into the conversation.
torbjorn··on Show HN: OhMyCo.in – Real-time charts for cryptocurrency markets
Looks excellent. I have no data to back this up but it feels very crisp and fast in the browser.

I must say however that the idea having the orderbook on the left side of the screen is something I would have to get used to. This may sound silly but I like having the orderbook on the right side of the screen since that way new bars on the candlestick chart appear right next to the orderbook box which is congruent with the reality that the orderbook is literally producing the new candles on the the chart.
