toptal··on Why Is the Amazon Rain Forest Disappearing?
The article doesn’t, however the study does. You can see it’s circled in the map along with China and India. Read the study.
toptal··on Why Is the Amazon Rain Forest Disappearing?
Right, something seems very off with this journalism here.
toptal··on Why Is the Amazon Rain Forest Disappearing?
Wait a second, there was just a report put out by NASA that stated the world is become more green, specifically citing the Amazon Rain Forest as an area that’s more green than it was 20 years ago.

Something seems completely wrong here.

toptal··on Ask HN: What things have richly rewarded the time invested in mastering them?
Sound engineering. If you're a good sound engineer, you can basically get any album or record signed. All major labels look for excellent sound engineering first, and creativity second. This may sound counterintuitive, however if something is very creative and sounds unprofessional, they won't sign it. If it sounds excellent though very uncreative, it's still professional so there is a high chance of them signing it.

Of course you need both, much like anything great, however a well engineered track will get you significantly further than a creative track with poor engineering.

If you can do both, you will be a rockstar, literally.

toptal··on Stripe Is Now a $20B Company
Adyen is actually 23b as the 19b you mentioned is in Euros. It’s also noteworthy that Stripe has about 1/2 the revenue and the same growth as Adyen, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the public markets given that they have nearly identical business models.
toptal··on Everybody Hates Uber
I strongly disagree with this. I enjoy the Uber experience and the customer support that the company provides.

To me, Uber is a great company both as a customer and entrepreneur.

toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Payment Processor Adyen
They built an incredible amount of infrastructure to support it, better than anyone due to the fact they were all ex payment execs. Business cards are nuanced and they didn't focus on it, though they're about 1:1 with Stripe.
toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Payment Processor Adyen
There definitely is not. Good idea though, however the margins would be razor thin. Possibly too thin.
toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Payment Processor Adyen
Adyen will be better if you have more consumer cards vs. business cards being charged. Nearly 100% chance of this, otherwise Stripe may win.
toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Processor Adyen
It's hard to pronounce and means nothing.
toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Processor Adyen
Adyen is ~$10b startup and actually significantly larger than Stripe. They don't get a lot of press because they have a terrible name, most likely.

They are significantly better for large consumer facing companies than anyone.

toptal··on EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Processor Adyen
Amazing.
toptal··on The Google memo isn’t sexist or anti-diversity, it’s science
This is actually a great scientific read.
toptal··on Counting Down to the New Ampere (2016)
So does this mean that quantum computing will become more viable? Since in quantum computing, calculations are accomplished by measuring the spin of an electron, I would imagine this would increase the throughput to a measurement instrument since this is allowing one electron to pass at a faster pace. While electron measurement instruments still need to be advanced significantly, I would imagine an innovation like this would further advance the reality of true quantum computing. Is this an accurate assessment?
toptal··on Why Are There So Many Pythons?
We definitely have a very personal approach. If you contacted us, there's a good chance we responded.
toptal··on Bootstrapped, Profitable and Proud
Here at Toptal we were boot strapped for more than a year before taking any money from a16z and others. It not only helps funding, it also helps the core of your company run at a fundamental level; seeing every operation through the lens of profit vs. loss which most (purely) funded VC companies don't grasp very well at all. It's extremely important.
toptal··on How I Made Porn Video Streaming More Efficient with Python and C
Your version of "on call" is not congruent with ours or most of the world. When a doctor or DBA is "on call", they have to get up, fix something, and spend hours if not days doing it. We simply enforce communication. If you want to call that "on call" then your decision, and we disagree with that definition. To answer you question, yes, if you're responsible (in our subjective definition of what constitutes responsibility), you will answer within around 10 hours. In practically all communication you can reply "I got this I'll answer you later." or something similar to show responsiveness. The word responsibility stems from "response ability" and we believe that everyone should be... responsible. That's in our DNA.

Hey Elbear, that's not in our contracts, at all. We do make sure our developers communicate within 10 hours regardless of the timezone. We feel that is more than reasonable and it's worked extremely well for Toptal. However, that's not in our contract, it's actually something we simply stay on top of as a company. Our requirements are not "weird" at all, they enforce high integrity, and in most places in the world, the concept of high integrity is "weird". The type of people who will not conform to such standards are precisely the types of individuals who we would never want to work with in a million years, and that is precisely why freelancing platforms have such a pervasively bad reputation.. because they're filled with low or even medium integrity individuals. To us, that's unacceptable. As it is to any A-player team. -Taso, CEO, Toptal
