topham··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
Should dig up my slashdot 5 digit uid to placate your concerns, or just decide your opinion in regards to me is irrelevant? (Because it is.)

My uid was < 32768.

topham··on OpenAI's Artist Rules Are Easier to Evade Than to Explain
Can an artist duplicate a style without violating rights?

Yes.

Then an AI duplicating style isn't inherently violating any rights either.

If you want to get them in the consumption of the content it gets murky quick. Have you every watched a pirated movie? Should you be convicted of that, or of sharing it?

Subsequently describing the movie to some else constitute sharing of it?

topham··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
I've programmed for decades. Vibe coding is more fun than writing boilerplate just to kick off a small project these days.

The days of:

10 PRINT "Hello World!"; 20 GOTO 10

Are long gone.

topham··on Is it normal for a take-home to require booking real sales demos?
No. And this looks as scammy as you can get.
topham··on Borland Turbo Basic
I know their Turbo C 2 tools did.

Miss those days. When I got a 386 and could use the turbo debugger to hack games. Pretty sweet. Just run the code; interrupt it near where it was asking for a word or number or clicking a symbol, then tweak a flag and let the game continue.

So often the final fix was to nop out an instruction that set a flag and just let it fall through.

Then there was the DSI team in Vancouver who encrypted their boot code...

topham··on SWC stops accepting external PRs due to AI-generated content
AI doesn't give a flying fuck about your political opinion while they tear into your lack of security.
topham··on This Could legitimately end Stop Killing Games [video]
I didn't follow down the rabbit hole, but the premise seems on point and the hype isn't too severe.

Imagine that, using "think of the kids" as the scape goat to "totalitarian rule" seems to be the in thing these days.

topham··on Old hearts age backwards: transplanted organs adjust to host's biological age
"according to a study1. The findings, posted on the preprint server bioRxiv and not yet peer reviewed"

So, meaningless at this time.

topham··on UDP Broadcasting and the Brave New World of IPv6
I thought the article missed the mark and decided to experiment with IPv6 and update a Raspberry Pico project to use IPv6 multicast and also mDNS/DNS-SD.

In an afternoon I was able to get it working and running reliably. I'm not saying there aren't potential issues, either in my code, lwip (supported framework).

What I am saying is that ipv6 with ipv6 multicast instead of Broadcasting is approachable today. It's approachable on the desktop as well as microcontrollers for IoT uses.

Seriously, this was so easy to get working I'm thinking of expanding the usage of some IoT projects I've been languishing on.

topham··on Jehovah's Witnesses allow blood-derived products but keep ban on whole-blood
So somebody high up in the organization needed plasma or the like and instead of being ex-communicated they just changed the rules to solve the problem.

"The Jeffrey Epstein edition"
topham··on Please Apple, free us from dopamine hell with cross-app Siri automations
Thanks for listening.

I named my social media folder anti-social for a reason.

Social media apps will always build to dark patterns; they are driven on engagement.

topham··on Please Apple, free us from dopamine hell with cross-app Siri automations
Can't take it seriously and read the article.

You have a statement to make and the your choice is making it's own statement about usability that is, frankly, off putting.

topham··on Large language models develop novel social biases through adaptive exploration
Creating bias in models is easy. Amplifying existing biases are easy too.

They aren't necessarily a sign of bias in the underlying model however. Many samples would be required for that.

topham··on Solving the Jane Street reverse engineering challenge
If learning is the point then obviously that was a missed opportunity.

If success was the intent, then it's a win.

While challenges are fun, sometimes the requirement is simply to achieve the end goal, with no other point than that.

If your job is to stop terrorists, and that includes hacking into a system and extracting their plans, the "fun" of it isn't the point, only the end goal it's important. Sometimes when we do things like this for fun we forget that someone else out there absolutely needs to achieve the result and doesn't care how it's achieved.

It's the part of penetration testing some people miss. (It's not generally a fun job, almost everyone I know that did it got out as soon as possible. They weren't solving problems, they just running audit scripts and generating reports.)

topham··on Late-life semaglutide slows ageing and extends lifespan in female mice
Ironically it takes away the reason people want to live. Their joy, fun, the spark of life disappears for many people.
topham··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
Sure, you had to pick the browser I despise worse than Netscape 4.
topham··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
You didn't have what you needed; you asked an AI to help make what you needed.

Problem solved. New problem created.

New problem?

Justifying the use of AI to do something these people act like would magically get done if you were just slightly more patient. Or, if you put in 60+ hrs of time.

topham··on Every student is cheating with AI
They do not have the competence to do this.

Recognizing this is the first step.

topham··on The Tokenpocalypse Is Here: Companies Are Scrambling to Stop Spending on AI
This post is for paid members only.

For trivial tasks - like converting pdf to PowerPoint - are there other tools that do it automatically? Or by trivial, you mean time consuming reduction of basic facts from a pdf into a PowerPoint presentation? I have to tell you, the most valuable thing I don't have in a day is time.

topham··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
Have you seen the spec for RSS?

I've vomited better things.

The spec is a horrible mash up and seriously needed refinement. It made it easy to kill

topham··on That's Not What I Meant by 'Using AI'
Nice breakdown.

My experience has been that code generated "vibe coding" is prototype worthy, but code driven to be developed with Test Driven Development mindset and with forced architectural decisions is generally supportable.

The middle ground, trying to vibe code it, then declare it enterprise grade is doomed to disaster.

topham··on I built the budgeting app I always wanted
To scared to install. Negative would be too depressing.
topham··on Quality non-fiction books are the antithesis of AI slop
It tends to the mean. You can get it to do that less, but it's an inherent bias
topham··on Infuriating Google commercial imagines the founding fathers embracing AI
How many had slaves? How many had business partners with slaves?
topham··on I Wasn't Allowed Prompting ChatGPT During My Chalk Talk: This Is Discrimination (2025)
I don't have a problem using AI.

I also acknowledge, when doing so, how I use it.

But, literally typing in a prompt and then massaging its output and then claiming ownership of its plan? Yeah, no.

It doesn't matter if the original article is supposed to be satire. I've been using AI to do some coding, I've been using it to help me plan a much larger project. It's a tool, and it's useful; but I am in control of the project, not letting the AI control me.

Meanwhile in my day job, I've had multiple coworkers pump shit into AI and regurgitate the answer without critical thought. They are letting it make decisions for them without validating it first even.

It's not really satire if we're already dealing with this attitude.

topham··on I Wasn't Allowed Prompting ChatGPT During My Chalk Talk: This Is Discrimination (2025)
"prepared to do what I do every single day in my actual scientific practice: type a prompt and receive a coherent, well-structured response that I would then lightly edit and present as my own thinking."

So, plagiarism. Daily.

topham··on A man was gifted his dream car by Kevin Mitnick, who he helped put in prison
The hero worship of him makes me physically ill, always has.

He did cost people their jobs though, so I guess he's a good person.

topham··on The new HTTP QUERY method explained
If it crashes it's a security issue.

It should adept reject what it does not expect.

topham··on The new HTTP QUERY method explained
Browsers won't.

No, really, they simply won't implement it.
