toomuchcoffee··on How I Fired Myself
The CEO leaned across the table, got in my face, and said, "this is a MONUMENTAL fuck up."

It certainly was -- on multiple levels, but ultimately up at the C-level. Blaming a single person (let a lone a junior engineer) for it just perpetuates the inbred culture of clusterfuckitude and cover-ass-ery which no doubt was the true root cause of the fuck-up in the first place.

toomuchcoffee··on The hidden beauty of recruiting
>For us, if we didn't make an offer it's either because the applicant is a jerk, a liar, or incompetent.

What an incredibly cocky and pretentious view of the world.

toomuchcoffee··on Don't hire only self-described awesome developers
Not to try to temper your frustration (which is quite legitimate), but in this context, "we're looking for a different skill set" is almost certainly a foil. Quite often companies will say things like that when really they mean they were just fundamentally disappointed in you for reasons X or Y they would find too awkward or risky to disclose to you.
toomuchcoffee··on Don't hire only self-described awesome developers
Awesome point there.

Almost by definition, anyone who really is a badass, rockstar, ninja, etc. at what they do is viscerally repelled by the cockiness exuding from job ads seeking people who describe themselves as such... and would never dream of applying for such jobs.

toomuchcoffee··on FBI launches $1 billion face recognition project
Or as they say in Eurasia, "behaving abnormally":

toomuchcoffee··on All Kindle Fires sold to US customers will have home screen ads
We've asked Amazon why the ads are US-only, and whether customers can pay to turn them off. If there is such an option, it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the Kindle Fire announcements or the Amazon sales pages. The prices are quite good, though, beating or matching the prices of tablets of comparable sizes.

...and pretty soon, before you know it in fact, we won't be able to power them down, either. Or disconnect the cameras or mikes.

"But hey, they're only $40 now, and the retina displays are just fantastic..."

toomuchcoffee··on FBI launches $1 billion face recognition project
"It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face...; was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime..."

toomuchcoffee··on Show HN: escape from meetings, etc with a prearranged phone call: GetOutCall.com
Sweet.

Now you just need to grab a few more more domains, e.g. "EscapeMyDate.com", etc.

toomuchcoffee··on TSA Moves On From Your Underwear to Your Starbucks
Apparently the auto-kill filtering is source-, rather than pattern-based. For example this article seems to have made it through:

http://news.ycombinator.org/item?id=4487658

Even though its title also mentions the Unnameable Politician.

toomuchcoffee··on TSA Moves On From Your Underwear to Your Starbucks
Really now? Let's try a little experiment:

toomuchcoffee··on Why Java Developers Should Check Out Scala
Umm, so you're saying vi is "new wave"?
toomuchcoffee··on Ticked off: How stock market decimalization killed IPOs and ruined our economy
Interesting article, but the title should probably be "How stock market decimalization killed IPOs and saved our economy."

That is, whatever the cause-and-effect relationship between decimalization and IPOs, it's a bit fatuous to maintain that outsize IPOs are, by themselves, "good" for the economy.

toomuchcoffee··on SSL/TLS Has Been Broken By New Attack
Umm, "broken" isn't what the title says.

Nor is it what the content of the article implies.

toomuchcoffee··on _Why Documentary at Rubyconf 2012, Denver
It's always that way, with creative types. The more they try to just fade back into the woodwork... the more intently people try to grab a little piece of them.

Till pretty soon, even more so than for their considerable accomplishments, they become famous for... not wanting to be famous:

toomuchcoffee··on I ♥ Py - home
You're probably right, and I've had to apologize to Python a number of times in the past. So let this be another. I'm still a bit scarred from a certain 2.7-era experience, so presumably you can empathize.
toomuchcoffee··on Is it possible to travel in Stockholm on a budget?
In order to keep my costs down, I stayed with a friend the whole week... I cooked all my own food.

That's not "travel." That's "staying with friends." Completely useless to compare day-to-day budgets for the two categories.

On that note, I'm sure I'd save a heck of a lot of my day-to-day expenses in the major city I live in if I was "staying with friends" and had time to cook my own meals all the time.

toomuchcoffee··on Ask HN: Do you have loads of browser tabs open at once?
Yesss but there's lots of apps like that do similar / overlapping things that you'll sort of have to steal/borrow from. In particular, some form of social bookmarking/tagging would seem to be a necessary component of a service of this kind.

The trick then is to pull this off without drowning in your own web of complexity.

toomuchcoffee··on I ♥ Py - home
Thanks; I'll give it a whirl.
toomuchcoffee··on Ask HN: Do you have loads of browser tabs open at once?
Something that auto-retires tabs after some egregiously long delay, with some kind of latent tagging functionality (based on tags for similar pages I've bookmarked) might be useful.

Then again, it will probably just encourage me to open more and more tabs...

toomuchcoffee··on Free app allows public to anonymously report, share info on sexual behavior
Talk about promoting way-skewed sampling bias. But then again, that was pretty much always what the Kinsey Report was about, wasn't it?
toomuchcoffee··on I ♥ Py - home
But if Python really ♥'d you back, it'd at least attempt to offer something resembling first-class Unicode support.
toomuchcoffee··on How to not handle hiring.
Later that day (6 hours to be exact) call them and let them know that your refrences came back great, but that there was a meeting that day and they decided that they're no longer hiring for that position.

I know someone who was told mid-way through an interview, "I just talked with the CTO and he said we're not hiring until the end of the year."

His interviewer sheepishly apologized, and said on the way out, "maybe we'll get to see you in January" -- so who knows, maybe it wasn't total BS (or just dorky way of attempting to put a good spin on a piece of bad news for the candidate). But still, it boggles the mind that companies keep pulling stunts like this.

toomuchcoffee··on Shin Mochizuki has released his long-rumored proof of the ABC conjecture
I actually like the austere minimalism of JFN's page; it practically exudes sprezzatura, we might say.

Reminds me of some of his early papers, in that sense.

toomuchcoffee··on Honduras sets stage for 3 privately run cities
Libertopia in our time, at long last!
toomuchcoffee··on Neuroscientists successfully control the dreams of rats
Maybe it's the rats who are experimenting on us, faking hippocampal replay responses to control the dreams of neuroscientist "researchers", making them run through cognitive mazes while drooling after the ephemeral crumbs of peer accolades and citation cred...
toomuchcoffee··on How we keep GitHub fast
Should I feel bad knowing that ... someone wasted valuable time...

No, but you should feel bad for thinking "it looks pretty" ==> "someone spent a lot of time making it look that way."

In particular, what you need to consider is: maybe they didn't spend all that much time on the visuals. Maybe they were either just really experienced, and it took next to no effort to get it to look that way... or maybe they had next to no knowledge, but used a framework to make it look as if they did.

I find this is a very common mistake managers make, BTW: assuming they can estimate, in the blink of an eye, how long it took to get a certain feature or behavior of an app into existence, out of nothing (and quite often, getting this estimate off by an order of magnitude in one direction or the other).

toomuchcoffee··on Texas Students Revolt Against Mandatory RFID Tracking Chips
These RFIDs are even easier to disable than cell phones since they can just be kept in a metallic pouch when not needed,

Hey guess what? If they can coerce you into carrying the devices, they can also threaten you with penalties -- ranging from marking you as "absent" or worse -- to deter you from shielding them.

toomuchcoffee··on Texas Students Revolt Against Mandatory RFID Tracking Chips
Then you get either marked for absenteeism, or hit with criminal penalties for "tampering with school property."
toomuchcoffee··on Shin Mochizuki has released his long-rumored proof of the ABC conjecture
Clearly he isn't a crank, and I didn't mean for a minute to imply that he was one. I just found the design aesthetics of his web page to be an... interesting coincidence.

But that said -- just trust your gut instincts here. There's a long history in mathematics of brilliant people going off into the dark for frighteningly long periods of time, and coming back with announcements of major results that turn out to be... interesting, but ultimately to contain irreparable gaps. And the fact that nobody -- not even people like Tao or Conrad -- seems to know what exactly he's talking about (even though they obviously respect the guy) doesn't sound too encouraging, either.

toomuchcoffee··on Shin Mochizuki has released his long-rumored proof of the ABC conjecture
Wow. Not only has he just demolished the ABC conjecture as a mere afterthought to his pathbreaking research into inter-universal Teichmüller theory... he's also an awesome Geocities-style web designer:

Clearly this man is a force to be reckoned with.
