tonypags··on Google CEO: Building for our AI future
When a military force puts its assets under civilian infrastructure, that forces your enemy to flirt with near-genocide in order to protect themselves.

There is no good guy nor bad guy in this fight. Only bad guys. Unfortunately innocents get caught up in the crossfire. Welcome to humanity, war is what we do. Stop trying to pick a side and start speaking out against all violence. People might be more willing to hear you out.

tonypags··on Google CEO: Building for our AI future
It seems like your take on this statement from Google is highly subjective.
tonypags··on Google CEO: Building for our AI future
Reading into these statements is a mistake. It's full of soft language, which in context can be twisted to fit anyone's perception. I'm not defending Google; I am defending the termination of employees that have obviously prioritized the wrong things in their careers, or did not have the mentorship available to guide them to better ways of expressing themselves other than corporate sabotage.

Also you're adding that word impartial as if they used it, but they didn't. Impartiality infers some personal lack of favoritism. A private company can obviously play favorites with whatever they think will make them more money as part of their mission.

Politics do not belong in the work place or at the dinner table. They belong in your head and to be cast on your annual voter ballot, and if you feel like expressing yourself: penned in letters/tweeted to your various representatives, and nowhere else. I don't mind it being on socials as long as there's a way to filter it out of my feed.

People used to say it a lot: never talk about politics or religion unless you want to make enemies out of your friends/family. It's still good advice, even if no one is listening. Be the change you want to see in the world (Nelson Mandela). If you want to be objective, start from there, don't start in your boss' boss' boss' boss' office.

tonypags··on Rents Are the Fed's 'Biggest Stumbling Block' in Taming US Inflation
You're partly correct. Our economy runs on consumption. Housing is a consumable, of sorts. Then you consume home appliances, furniture, textiles, etc. People consume more when they own, and less when they rent.
tonypags··on Rents Are the Fed's 'Biggest Stumbling Block' in Taming US Inflation
Really? The reasons you gave are perpetual. Don't you think that the real reason, in this moment in history, is that landlords are colluding on rents? If we enforced anti-competitive laws, and raised property taxes in the suburbs to a level commensurate with the maintenance costs of those areas' infrastructure, it would solve a lot of these problems.

> the nature of working for a company is that you need to align yourself with the company's mission and methods

This is correct for any business. If you ran a business, would you tolerate any employee who attempts to subvert your products and revenue?

tonypags··on Microsoft is stuffing pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows again
So glad I don't use either MS or GOOG browsers so I don't have to witness this childish behavior myself.
tonypags··on New York State Deploys National Guard to NYC Subways to Fight Crime (Bloomberg)
This only applies to the gov't
tonypags··on New York State Deploys National Guard to NYC Subways to Fight Crime (Bloomberg)
I smell sarcasm! :) But seriously, riding the subway is not a right. They make rules for the subway and enforce them at their own leisure. But it's 100% legal to turn someone away if they don't comply with rules they make up themselves. MTA is a private entity.
tonypags··on The real engine behind "AI" is the bad tech economy
I would define a "bad" company as one that puts profits over people. People includes customers (incl b2b) and employees. A "good" company is one that realizes treating people with respect is a long-term profit driver.
tonypags··on Floppydisk.com – a website that still (now) sells floppy disks
I found an audio tape single from the mid 90s last week and played it on an old tape deck. Sounded great, but I may have nostalgia-bias.
tonypags··on Russia to Withdraw Troops from Kherson
From the article (buried in the middle):

But its decision to pull back across the Dnipro river was treated with caution by Ukrainian officials.

"Actions speak louder than words," said presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak.

"We see no signs that Russia is leaving Kherson without a fight... [Ukraine] is liberating territories based on intelligence data, not staged TV statements."

tonypags··on I made a guitar tuner app using Flutter and Rust
Assuming you're using A440. I do not see a way to change it to my preferred reference frequency A432.
tonypags··on FCC to remove companies from robocall database for non-compliance [pdf]
I would like to know more about this exciting income opportunity.
tonypags··on Ask HN: Why doesn’t Apple allow torrent clients on the app store?
Cons of cryptocurrency outweigh the Pros. Yet these apps are on the app store.

tonypags··on The first high-yield, sub-penny plastic processor
What's the environmental impact for adding more cheap plastic to all of the things? Serious question. The onus should be placed on the producer to ensure they are sustainable (the opposite of how it's always been done, by the consumer). The article makes no mention of this.

I get that we're still at the laboratory phase, but I think it should still be part of the discussion.

tonypags··on Ask HN: How do you stay focused at work?
Late to the party but:

Bose noise canceling headphones and Instrumental music: Mostly techno (jungle/house), jazz sometimes.

Random thoughts go on a list (pen and paper--no context switching on my computer).

At end of day, make a list of things to do first thing the next morning.

Once a week, go through all my notes and condense/backlog; ensure my roadmap lines up with my tasks and re-prioritize as needed. I try to have all my meetings on this day also, which gives me large blocks of time to focus on other days.

tonypags··on Ask HN: Hacker claimed ownership and then deleted my Facebook Page of 50k users
Any chance you can share the topic of the FB group? I'm curious to know if it was politically motivated (even non-political topics can have their own, internal politics, too). Maybe someone is trying to silence you?
tonypags··on Yes Hello
Just saw this. When will you be around to discuss?
tonypags··on Ask HN: “HN” for Sysadmins?
I used to feel that same way. But after reading HN for a while I got used to ignoring the items that don't interest me. But I've always been drawn to things outside my area of expertise. Full disclosure: I'm an ex-sysadmin, current "devops" type person. Waiting for RSS to make a comeback

tonypags··on A Cool Customer
Thermal energy is heat. Not cold. Heat is being transferred from the retail cellar to the coolant.

The prosecution is right, they are paying to cool the retail cellar. But you can't produce cold, you can only remove heat.

The judge is MORE right, the argument that thermal energy is being stolen is not factual.

I don't see how this heat exchange could have been avoided. Why didn't the beer guy just get some more insulation?
