Wait, what does nobility mean other than aristocracy?
tontonius··on Audacity 4.0
open source apps can be insanely powerful (and free!) but a thing that keeps a lot of them from 'mainstream' adoption is simply the F-tier user experience

gimp had the same issue and i wouldnt be surprised if you also miss the old GTK UI?

making audacity feel like a modern app instead of a dusty relic isnt making it into McDonalds..

I for one applaud this upgrade -- its the polish it should have had years ago

tontonius··on Don't paste the AI, please
just me or does this entire site/text read as 100% LLM generated? extremely ironic if so, they just pasted the AI.
tontonius··on Nerd culture is murdering intellectuals
there used to be a distinction between nerds and geeks
tontonius··on [dead]
fun fact: this ”far right” party was founded by a former member of the Young Left - youth wing of the Swedish Left Party (formerly known as the Communist Party). Horseshoe theory in practice or just wrongly labeled?
tontonius··on I indexed 669 GB of my GoPro videos using my M1 Max computer and local ML models
hmm weird works for me.. what about https://getjumper.io/?
tontonius··on I indexed 669 GB of my GoPro videos using my M1 Max computer and local ML models
if anyone is interested in searching large video collections local and offline I suggest taking a look at Jumper https://docs.getjumper.io

comes with some nifty features like NLE- integrations, people search, MCP, API etc

tontonius··on Report on an Unidentified Space Station
just read it and not entirely sure what the allegory was, if any.

some ideas off the top of my head:

- "humans invent meaning after losing orientation": instead of simply accepting reality (we cant comprhened, our instruments cant measure this, we are lost etc) they turn helplessness into theology

- "science-becomes-religion": hypotheses, measurements revise previous findings into increasing absurdity which eventually becomes religion.

-" life as a waiting room": the station is an allegory for life or conciousness. we're all solitary voyagers on our infinite journey thru the "waiting rooms" of our existence. the journey is the destination etc

curious to hear other riffs/takes on this

tontonius··on Vibe Coding Is Not Engineering
what’s this precocious urge to define what vibe coding is and isn’t?

who cares?

tontonius··on Qwen3-VL can scan two-hour videos and pinpoint nearly every detail
this is a solved problem already — check out https://getjumper.io where you can do exactly this (search through 100s of hours) offline and locally.

tontonius··on Ask HN: Is it true our phones listen to us?
somehow you never hear stories where they talked about a singer and _didn’t_ see an ad for that singer’s concert?
tontonius··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Jumper - a tool for video editors to do visual search on their footage. ML runs locally, no clouds, uploads etc. Currently working on the DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer integrations and in parallel doing a re-write of the frontend

How am I supposed to read this ? a thinly veiled hatred for Mr. Musk?
tontonius··on Why probability probably doesn't exist (but it is useful to act like it does)

tontonius··on X isn't important enough to feel the full force of EU regulation
Honestly, this seems like a win for X but the article tries (somewhat hard) to frame it as a loss. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the author's personal opinion of Mr Musk.

VAR evidence leads judge to say that it would have been "impossible for him to cheat at that point".

Dang, please update the link title to reflect that.

tontonius··on Browser Market Share Statistics
Could be that Chrome on iPhones use Apple's WebKit. Kind of like a Safari in a Chrome skin.
tontonius··on Enigmash Game
Love it! Reminds me about Chip’s Challenge! I used to play it on my old man’s 486 at the ripe age of 6 or 7. Found it last year on an online DOS emulator and was stunned to know that I knew the entire sequence of one of the earliest ice puzzles through pure muscle memory (some 25 years later)

cool thing but why is it asking for microphone + camera access? apologies if I missed some key information about it!

tontonius··on Thoughts on Arc Browser
Got invited this summer and was a bit skeptic at first (been trying different browsers on and off for the last couple of years). I knew nothing about the browser and had no real expectations. I have to say I was a bit impressed by the onboarding, the UX, and the attention to detail. (Perhaps because I work in UX)

Thought I'd try it for a week before eventually switching back to Chrome because of some missing feature or functionality – in reality it has been the opposite. I dread using Chrome again, and whenever I'm forced to, it feels like going back in time, but not even in a nostalgic way. Just a sense of "this is what we used before?"

Anyway, I have 5 invites if anyone wants to try it out.

I have some invites, let me know how to DM you and I'll send one right away
tontonius··on Ask HN: How do you navigate Seasonal Affective Disorder?
This sounds relevant to my interests. How big/strong heat dish did you use? And for how long at a time?
tontonius··on Dissatisfaction in the Tesla factory in Grünheide: employees are leaving
I'd be cautious to draw large conclusions based on this piece. At the core, it's a trade unionist (w/ friends) complaining on low or uneven salaries. This is pretty much the purpose of unions.

Ask a hair dresser if you need a haricut <-> ask a unionist if the wages are too low

tontonius··on The state finally letting teens sleep in
I recommend reading Matthew Walker’s “Why we sleep”. Needles to say, as a sleep researcher, he’s a big proponent of schools starting later for kids and youth in the formative years. Especially to make room for the “late morning REM” sleep that appears to be very important for young humans with developing brains.
