tonmoy··on USCIS announces strengthened integrity measures for H-1B program
Because then the agricultural company in Alabama wanting to hire the brightest chemist will be at a disadvantage compared to the IT firm in California. Forgetting about the cost of living adjustments for each area the industry wide disruption alone may not be worth it
tonmoy··on Lowercase letters save data
Wouldn't a perfect compression algorithm know that spaces are followed by Uppercase letter and take that into account?
tonmoy··on Five richest men have doubled their wealth since 2020
March 2020 seems like a pretty arbitrary starting point
tonmoy··on Unity's Open-Source Double Standard: The Ban of VLC
So I could be missing something, but the editor itself is not getting shipped to iOS devices, only the resulting binaries are.
tonmoy··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
I doubt your “other domains” are as safe and reliable as the aviation industry. An automated system may be possible to make, but will require a huge undertaking to bring even close to the current safety standards, and would introduce its own safety issues
tonmoy··on UK becomes first G20 country to halve its carbon emissions
Farmed wood should actually be considered carbon neutral. Other than transportation cost and the carbon emitted during harvesting, it’s a legitimate way of capturing carbon from the atmosphere and then just emitting the same carbon back
tonmoy··on Microsoft Outlook Blocking All Email from Tutanota.com Domain as Spam
Little OT, I was using Hotmail in 2015 to apply to grad schools. I got an email about interview from a professor with @vt.edu address that got flagged into spam. I noticed only after someone else got selected for funding. To this day I don’t understand why an email written by a professor from a reputable university domain was flagged as spam, but I have definitely stopped using Hotmail
tonmoy··on Ousted propaganda scholar accuses Harvard of bowing to Meta
It never has been, there may have been an illusion of it only
tonmoy··on A reality bending mistake in Apple's computational photography
I just want to be able to turn it off when I want to
tonmoy··on Climbing 50 steps a day can cut your risk of heart disease
I guess it’ll be better than not trying to make up for lost time
tonmoy··on The Tesla Semi from an Insider's View After One Year: "Hot Mess"
We need to go to net zero somehow. With carbon capture or carbon offset technologies near non existing, we have to make the switch sooner or later
tonmoy··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected
On top of that, when we immigrants also compare against other developed countries, we see how immigrant friendly the US is. The natural born citizens wouldn’t necessarily care about that
tonmoy··on Reality Labs has lost $11.4B during 2023 (there's still one quarter left)
I feel Quest is so well priced because Meta is probably losing money trying get consumers to buy them
tonmoy··on Peter Thiel was an FBI informant
You conveniently left out the first part of the sentence you are quoting
tonmoy··on "Building Machines That Learn and Think Like People", 7 Years Later
Internally that is probably something similar that is happening, but as far as I can tell it was never designed to specifically do that. Here is an example of the things GPT-4V is capable of: https://blog.roboflow.com/gpt-4-vision/amp/
tonmoy··on "Building Machines That Learn and Think Like People", 7 Years Later
You can ask GPT-4 for bounding box of each object in json format and it’ll give it to you. Don’t know if there is understanding, but it is definitely useful
tonmoy··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
MS could decide to prevent resale of next new game to be release on the PS like they did with Starfield. However, they are still significantly better than Sony, so can’t complain too much. This acquisition is probably a good thing for the game developers tho
tonmoy··on Honda debuts its first-ever electric autonomous zero-turn riding lawn mower
I suppose lawn mowers don’t have strict requirements like passenger road vehicle do (like ASIL-D or something), otherwise wouldn’t the dependency on cloud service would be a big headache?
tonmoy··on The largest DDoS attack to date, peaking above 398M rps
In less words, it’s DDoS attackers that make the internet a worst place
tonmoy··on ChatGPT – Dalle3 System Prompt
If someone had told me that the policy/instructions to a program/software would be provided in plain English 3 years ago, I would have said they watch too much Sci Fi. Even now I can’t wrap my head around that fact that people give specific instructions to LLMs using “system” prompt in the same manner like you would to an AI like Cortana in Sci Fi. Are you people who use LLMs like this, sure you’re not just figments of my dream/imagination?
tonmoy··on US science agencies on track to hit 25-year funding low
I wouldn’t compare my $400k debt with my monthly income. I’d compare my monthly income vs my mortgage payment and my investment incomes. Same goes for the government, divide debt by number of years needed to pay it off including interest subtract the earnings from economic activity and interest earning from giving out loan to other entities and the see if GDP is able to counter that
tonmoy··on US science agencies on track to hit 25-year funding low
Debt to GDP has no meaning as one is a balance and the other is a balance over a time. A better indicator will be Debt to GDP until the year infinity. Same goes for military budget, it’s for a year.
tonmoy··on Narges Mohammadi wins 2023 Nobel Peace Prize
There have been some “anti-western” Nobel peace prize awards in the recent past. I think Saudi Arab was not happy about 2011 Nobel peace prize winner for example. While Snowden and Assange have done great things, they are not exactly in line with the human rights activism type activities rewarded by the committee.
tonmoy··on Narges Mohammadi wins 2023 Nobel Peace Prize
Plenty of human rights activists have won the Nobel peace prize in the recent past, this is nothing new.
tonmoy··on As EV sales surge and cars get heavier, parking garages will have to change
Ok I’ll bite. I’m a “driver” and I live in a place where it is impossible to goto work without driving. When my ICE car finally stopped working I bought a heavy EV car because I care about climate change (not environment, but GHG emissions). Would you agree that in my case it was not hypocritical and probably not all EV drivers are hypocritical?
tonmoy··on Horcrux: Split your file into encrypted fragments
My understanding of modern cryptography is limited. Can someone explain if someone gets my horcrux files, would they be able to decrypt the original? If so, then what is the benefit of this tool?
tonmoy··on Oscilloscope watch ships after 10 years on Kickstarter
Apple made devices in other form factors for decades before being able to market the Apple Watch.
tonmoy··on Samsung Unveils Industry's First 32Gbit DDR5 Memory Die: 1TB Modules Incoming
Once more people start having more RAM, these programs will start getting updates to use up that RAM. It’s like Moore’s law but in reverse
tonmoy··on A case for dynamic scoring of high-skilled immigration
A bidding system will help tech companies in California more preferentially than the agricultural engineering firm in Alabama. Is that better for the US? I’m not sure
