tonfreed··on The Engagement Is Better on Bluesky
Yeah, but it's funnier seeing people get bodied by community notes on X
tonfreed··on I Stopped Using Kubernetes. Our DevOps Team Is Happier Than Ever
I work for a large corp and we have three for apps (dev, integrated testing, prod) plus I think two or three more for the platform team that I don't interact with. 47 seems horrendously excessive
tonfreed··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang (2022)
Exactly. Every programming language is a tool in your toolbox, and you should choose the appropriate one for the job at hand. For me, that's Go around 95% of the time.

I have no need to worry about a 24 byte overhead for a slice allocation, if I did have to worry about that, I'd probably use C or Rust.

tonfreed··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I'll never create a bluesky account because the people who use it ultimately think it's some sort of genius political point to rag on X.

Went to GopherconAU last week and one of the organizers very proudly announced that you should "skeet" with their hashtag like the word didn't have another completely inappropriate connotation. I really can't take this sort of internet circlejerk seriously when I have a mortgage to pay and a family to look after.

tonfreed··on X suspends account that leaked info about protected user TOS bypass
There were celebrities and leftwing figures getting away with all sorts of unsavoury language on Twitter for years, so the tools were probably already there. Would be more surprising if they hadn't been put to use for the inverse after leadership changed.
tonfreed··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
The soundtrack he links to reminds me of a game from the 90s called 7th Legion. It was average at best, but the music was killer
tonfreed··on Gunshots reportedly fired at Donald Trump rally; walked off-stage
Yeah, the CIA wetwork branch should be the only people allowed to hold a gun
tonfreed··on Ask HN: How do you find a "boring" tech job?
I got into a bank first as a contractor and then just hanging tight until an internal full time spot opened up. Maybe see if there's some managed services agencies hiring that can get you in somewhere
tonfreed··on OpenAI appoints Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone to Board
Well lads, it was fun while it lasted
tonfreed··on Young women fall out of love with dating apps
It's a shame, met my wife on OkCupid
tonfreed··on Electrically conductive bricks can replace fossil fuels in industrial processes
Thanks, was going to ask where the carbon was coming from
tonfreed··on Epic's proposed remedies are bad for everyone but Epic
It feels like they're trying to get Android Stans on Twitter to complain everywhere like I've seen Apple fanboys doing since the EU told Cupertino to allow alternative app stores. I don't think Android users really tie their identity into that product the same way, tbh
tonfreed··on How rich is too rich? Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
You create power and those that lust after it are drawn to it like moths to a flame.
tonfreed··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
I don't see why the West should allow government corporations from China to operate within their borders. It's not like there's reciprocal agreements in place that allow the inverse.
tonfreed··on Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone
Just installed arch on my desktop last night. Going to daily drive and see if I can escape the windows madness. Only part I'm really worried about is all my music production stuff, going to have to try out all these new VST wrappers
tonfreed··on I spoke with a Google worker fired for protesting $1.2B Israel contract
This is the result of civil disobedience. He wanted to raise awareness of Google's dealings with the Israeli defence force, this is probably the best thing that could have happened, because all eyes are on the cause now.

He's either genuinely passionate and has taken what he sees as a moral stand for a company he probably didn't want to work for, or his protest is purely performative and he's fucked up pretty badly. My money is on the second option, but without being able to read his thoughts we'll never know

tonfreed··on I spoke with a Google worker fired for protesting $1.2B Israel contract
Ok, so should James Demore be reinstated? All the did was post something that no one had to even read on an internal page.
tonfreed··on Punk is dead and so are we
By blue hair and pronouns crowd, they're referring to the "gay as an aesthetic" types. You don't need to be gay to be queer anymore, it's simply a performative fashion trend to be sold to teenagers at the mall. That's the entire point of the essay.
tonfreed··on Chris Wanstrath "defunkt" GitHub cofounder and former CEO is banned on GitHub
One of the reasons I have my own gitea box now
tonfreed··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
I think we're going to start coming out of the social media fugue. I know more and more people who have stopped using broadcast and algorithmic feeds, and I feel like it's a genuinely positive change where we can disagree but still be friends again. I'm optimistic that division politics is going to start losing elections and tanking cultural endeavors more consistently, and we'll get back to actually talking to our neighbors and seeing some fresh ideas in media.
tonfreed··on How Did Polyamory Become So Popular?
Anecdotally, I know a few people that have been in open relationships.

Most of them are because the girl has berated and worn down their partner and really only stays there for the meal ticket.

I know precisely 2 couples where it works in a functional and mature manner. I would honestly not recommend it for anyone

tonfreed··on Fastmail Employees Form a Union
I make liberal use of the masked email feature. Love Fastmail
tonfreed··on Most 16-year-olds don't have servers in their rooms
16 year old me would be super jealous. Awesome work, and I hope you keep flying high
tonfreed··on "I just bought a 2024 Chevy Tahoe for $1"
See you say this, but their chatgpt bill is going to be through the roof
tonfreed··on Fastmail Employees Form a Union
It was bought by the core employees here in Melbourne, I don't think the employees in the US have any kind of stake in it
tonfreed··on Fastmail Employees Form a Union
Yeah, I have the choice of about 3 unions where I work, all of which are big unions because there can only be one per industry in Australia. All three have wasted way too much time and members' money on vanity projects that I don't want to join.
tonfreed··on Hasbro lays off nearly 20% of its workers
I'm a D&D player, and have definitely noticed a drop in quality of 5e products to the point where I just wasn't interested in buying anything after witchlight. Being a DM, I slurped up every book to steal ideas and encounters that I could use with little effort.

My group also all had the same visceral reaction to the OGL kerfuffle early this year and moved to Pathfinder 2e. I had a lot of fun with 5e, but it had already grown stale for me before all of the madness and short sighted decisions anyway.

tonfreed··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich: debunking trickle-down economics
Giving your money to the government doesn't magically help the poor either. With rampant waste and managerial arrogance in the public sector, we should be calling for sweeping reform that spends what tax is there for more efficiently and disincentivises waste and unnecessary spending.
tonfreed··on Evernote will restrict free users to 50 notes starting December 4
I moved to Zettlr and a git repo a long time ago. It has everything I need to organize and sync my notes without needing to pay any subscription fees
tonfreed··on Yesterday, planet Earth took its first step over the 2.0 degrees Celsius barrier
We did it Reddit!
