tonetegeatinst··on Hard drives on backorder for two years as AI data centers trigger HDD shortage
Imec has done work on transistor based memory that removes the capacitor part of the memory cell which would shrink cell sizes. While they have working prototypes and have scaled the tech, it uses technology from LCD panel manufacturing iirc which means it would require work to integrate into fab workflow for memory.

In other news, us datahoarders and folks who have to purchase drives in bulk (large scale businesses like a university or company that has its own in house IT department) feel the prices the hardest.

tonetegeatinst··on The Linux Kernel Looks to "Bite the Bullet" in Enabling Microsoft C Extensions
Is the Microsoft C extension an open spec that is impliented and supported in non Microsoft compilers?
tonetegeatinst··on Trump Administration Demands States 'Undo' Work to Send Full Food Stamps
I would argue it matters not wat is or isn't allowed. States have 0 room to bargain considering the leverage the FED has against states.
tonetegeatinst··on Trump Administration Demands States 'Undo' Work to Send Full Food Stamps
State sovereignty can still legally go against the constitution.

See how they make it so only citizens who have a gun permit in certain states can excersise the 2nd amendment right.

They could legally ban any magazine over 3 rounds, or any gun barrel as those are not legally considered a gun under legal definition. This is how they restrict your rights. They add clauses and rules so only those who can afford the hoop jumping can comply.

Imagine if we recognised how because words and rhetoric can be inflammatory, a state decided that you need a license to excersise your 1st amendment right.

tonetegeatinst··on Arti, a complete rewrite of the C Tor codebase in Rust
Still waiting for the tor network to implement a safeguard against BGP attacks.

I would argue that a BGP attack on for is more likely to happen than a memory safety attack....but hey more rust code is great....now I guess we will see if its still being supported/developed in 5 years.

tonetegeatinst··on Resolution limit of the eye – how many pixels can we see?
I would argue that color accuracy is under valued.

Having a high resolution monitor is great, its even become semi affordable. But color accuracy can be a pain point.

This dosnt matter if your just coding, unless you really care how realistic that code looks....but to anyone doing video or photo manipulation or front end design it can be a deal breaker.

tonetegeatinst··on The Mack Super Pumper was a locomotive engined fire fighter (2018)
I have a question for folks who handle pumps regularly. Almost all pumps are made for water, or sewage. How do you identify if a pump is rated to handle liquid metal or hot fluids (heated chemicals, or contents under extreme pressure)

I have never heard of a standard class of pumps for this....other than basically finding a manufacturer who specialized in these sort of pumps.

tonetegeatinst··on Reproducing the AWS Outage Race Condition with a Model Checker
Wish the author had an introduction to model checker article.

I have yet to learn about this and will not be throwing some time into researching this topic.

tonetegeatinst··on Palantir Thinks College Might Be a Waste. So It's Hiring High-School Grads
As someone who has had to support printers.....its a spectrum of pain from "god why do they do this" to "I'm pulling hair out, because no sane person would want to use this product willingly"
tonetegeatinst··on FFmpeg dealing with a security researcher
This seems very weird to me as someone who has been watching vulnerability reports for over 8+ years.

Normally if a bug is found in a open source project, then its common courtesy to propose a patch to fix it. Hell when you do red team security research on a codebase your supposed to identify the root cause in code or human behavior and propose a fix/patch if you have access to the code.

tonetegeatinst··on From 400 Mbps to 1.7 Gbps: A WiFi 7 Debugging Journey
Homelab or they are into big data set usage.

Or they seed large datasets for other researchers.

tonetegeatinst··on State of Embedded: Q4 2025 Overview
Does any SBC offer SFP+ or SFP28?

I don't see any option to sort by network speed or network chip

tonetegeatinst··on Anybody keep hearing about "vibe-trading" on TikTok and Reddit? Who has tried it
Yeah but out of those that don't lose money vibe trading....what % of those are back tested and your check to make sure your model or algorithm can handle out of sample data?
tonetegeatinst··on Easy RISC-V
Do you have a link to the risc-v version? I have the MIPS version and want to pick up the risc-v version.
tonetegeatinst··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel
As someone in the security field, who is currently in a security degree program...I have a major overlap with the EE and computer engineering degree requirements.

Iv dabbled in some basic MIPS assembly and some microcontroller programming but don't consider that as complicated as boot level firmware or say the firmware that controls complex stuff.

I view embedded as the closest I will ever get to actual hardware engineering and it shocks me how complex everything is.

tonetegeatinst··on Government IDs for age assurance: from selfies to zero-knowledge proofs
I would prefer a zero knowledge, zero trust proof of identity.

This would allow you to confirm you hold an identity (example being over 21, or having a permit) without the central authority being able to use the identity to track you or such.

A fantasy exams: you need an ID or license to fly an aircraft or to buy liquor. Zero trust zero knowledge let's you proof you have the right to do so, but that isn't trackable to a real identity or person.

tonetegeatinst··on Genetically modified banana could prevent a global crop collapse
I know this is entirely not the point but I wonder how much potassium these new bananas have.
tonetegeatinst··on AI is about to supercharge cyberattacks
I think the real danger is a company secretly developing and training a model that's specifically aimed at finding 0days and other attacks.

I agree AI raises the threat of phishing attacks....but the industry can adapt to this. It can't adapt to unknown threats like a well funded ATP ground that decides to innovate and create an AI that is good at finding 0days or side channel attacks.

tonetegeatinst··on LaserTweezer – Optical Trap
I have always seen manipulation at this scale done via micromanipulators (wire bonder or inside of a vacuum chamber)

When you need precision movement, the alternative to micromanipulation is using a XY stage like ASML uses.

XY let's you hold an object like a wafer or part, and move it around in certain planes while not moving in others. XY and even XYZ stages are not uncommon in vacuum chambers where parts need moved but repeatability is key.

tonetegeatinst··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel
Worse is how little information exists on firmware or how development for firmware works.

Its certainly not something regularly taught in higher education.

tonetegeatinst··on Making an Advanced Fluid Simulation for My Game
I love occasionally dropping in and watching what this channel has published.

I wonder what performance benefits could be squeezed out from myself and others if we all had to relearn data structures and algorithms. While I bet this is already super optimized for real time....I bet some interesting small performance could be squeezed out.

tonetegeatinst··on Max Tegmark: Which side of the AI safety community are you in?
When a metric is the measure of performance, it will eventually become useless.

Also plenty of these corporations will agree its a threat....because it gives value to their product.

I would argue that this becomes a self fulfilling prophecy because of how over concerned we are.

Plenty of "extinction level threats to humanity exist" like forever chemicals, resource scarcity, war, and genetic engineering.

tonetegeatinst··on Tiny Electric Motor Is as Powerful as Four Tesla Motors Combined
No cost or prices listed for those looking. Looks like you need connections or a big project to get access.
tonetegeatinst··on YOLO26 Release Preview: What to Expect
YOLO and opencv really show how far we have come in the past decade.

I think one place that really needs work is hardware. Sensors are limited in frequency range, and refresh rate or resolution. And a big bottle neck for computer vision is that you need a large bandwidth provider if you are doing centralized processing of the feeds and not on edge processing.

tonetegeatinst··on China mass producing next-gen quantum radar detector to track stealth aircraft
If it is mass produced, does that mean you could buy one?
tonetegeatinst··on Ask HN: How do you prepare for investor meetings?
I have yet to pitch to investors. That said, when I am pitching an idea or concept to others I always try to know what my end goal is, get my verbal or visuals all figured out so my conveying of ideas and such is as smooth as can be.

I want people who are willing to explore ideas and random concepts, but who also have faith in trying and failing. I am not looking for someone who is insincere in their interest or support nearly because of financial opportunity.

tonetegeatinst··on Method to directly generate photons in optical fiber could secure quantum net
Securing methods of transmission so that interception of data is impossible is one of my many dreams. Being able to not have to worry your transmission is being intercepted, be it wireless or via a physical tap on the fiber would bring huge peace of mind.

I know plenty see quantum as a hype cycle for certain groups, but the real benefit I see is that as our understanding of the most basic fundamental parts of reality grows, and our ability to manipulate on that scale emerges, we see large advancements in many fields as a result.

tonetegeatinst··on Texas bans people/entities from China, Iran, Russia, Korea from buying property
Wish other states would do this, as this not only muddies the supply and demand aspect but can be a geopolitical and security issue.
tonetegeatinst··on Trump Action Tracker
I wish this was applicable to MiTAP or a self hostable version of Main Core.
tonetegeatinst··on Intel Announces Inference-Optimized Xe3P Graphics Card with 160GB VRAM
What price is this sitting at? Because if its software support is decent then Intel might have just managed to break into the hardware for AI on the edge. Examples like self hosted LLM finetuning and RAG on a old dell or HP server with these type of cards on them.
