>I hate playing games where other players can just spend $10 and overtake hours worth of skilling.

But you can't. Not really. I guess it's location-dependant but if you live anywhere near a student campus or town there are literally tens of pokestops in a short 10min walk. My SO has got from level 1-11 without spending a penny, just by incorporating more pokestops into her little 'route' she has going. Added to that, the cooldown on a pokestop is 5 mins iirc, so you can pretty much milk them infinitely. If there's a stop in a pub for example, you'd be able to get 12 spins in the hour it takes you to catch up with your friends. Each spin tends to yield between 1-5 poke/greatballs.

Not sure what else is p2w, I was in the same boat as you until I saw how much progress my SO made without touching her purse.

I guess arguably the incense items in the cash shop are 'p2w', but you do get these through levelling up. Haven't seen any appear at pokestops yet. I've used 5 myself and all I've obtained through it are more Weedles and Pidgeys.

tomtoise··on 100M clear text passwords stolen from Russia's biggest social network
judging from that 'gram shot, it looks like VK didn't bother actually deleting user profiles (a lá Ashley Madison). Will be interesting to see the fallout from this, if confirmed.

Seen that site being spammed all over Reddit. At best, grey, at worst, scummy.

Edit: LeakedSource has been wrong in the past and will be wrong again. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11805691

They're leeches of the worst kind.

tomtoise··on Pennsylvania license plate reader SUV camouflaged as Google Street View vehicle
One could argue that you're wearing a license plate 'on' your neck. Facial recognition and that.
tomtoise··on FBI Paid More Than $1M to Hack San Bernardino iPhone
I was just thinking this. Again, I haven't been able to read the article but I was under the impression that the FBI paid to crack this one phone, I didn't realize that they have this tool that could 'hack' more iPhones with.
tomtoise··on FBI Paid More Than $1M to Hack San Bernardino iPhone
Paywalled for me here in the UK. I assume the title sums up the article?

Since I can't read the article, from anyone that can, how did they come to that figure? Is that just the cost of the exploit or..?

Cheers

Your parent poster is from a 3 hour old account with no other contribution to HN.

Safe to assume troll.

tomtoise··on Facebook Rights Manager
So.. how is 'freebooting' different to posting on reddit/HN/imgur/$site ?

You're growing your 'brand' as a poster of interesting/funny things (as seen via Karma), I suppose that as long as these entities don't attempt to claim this media as 'original content', I don't really have a problem.

If anything, attributing to the original creator is as simple as pressing 'share status' on facebook, instead of posting a direct url to the content in question.

edit - I fundamentally misunderstood the term freebooting. Will leave comment intact so replies still make sense, but thank you to child posters for clearing up my misconception.

tomtoise··on First came the Breathalyzer, now meet the roadside police “textalyzer”
Curious to know if it's even possible to know whether a driver has manually sent a text message / composed it via voice / given it to the passenger to compose text.

At least with breathalyzing, it's binary. You're either drunk or you're not, there's no middle ground or room for interpretation.

tomtoise··on A SimCity inspired city builder where you design an MMO RPG
At first with that Pillow Case game, I wasn't too impressed, it seemed to have one gimmick.

But holy hell, as it went further on with the person resizing/fourth wall escaping I was interested.

Much easier to plausibly deny it was you in IRC, with Snapchat etc, it's much harder to deny that you sent the photograph of yourself from your mobile device.

Is there a way to scrape these programatically? I feel like it'd be a useful repository to have stashed away for whatever future reason.
tomtoise··on Koel: A personal music streaming server
I find it pretty trash for discovery and things like playlists. I have 368 artists of stuff and it's quite unwieldly. Looking at Koel now.
tomtoise··on Someone left my Gmail in debug mode
Yeah, I had to leave a few meetings to 'get a drink of water' when we were discussing this. I wasn't the only person in the room who did. We got a lot of odd looks from seniors in that meeting. Perhaps it's only a millennial thing to find SIEM INASS funny?
tomtoise··on Someone left my Gmail in debug mode
Some genius at one place I worked decided to call our new SIEM offering 'INASS'. They were completely serious. Company head didn't see anything wrong with it, so for a few months we were offering INASS as a service. Can't remember what it stood for now, but luckily one of my higher-ups got them to change it to something more reasonable.
tomtoise··on The Serial Swatter
I feel like this will always be an issue, due to the heavy militarization of local police. When any swatting could be a real incident, I suppose they have no choice but to go in with guns drawn and ready for anything.
tomtoise··on Axel Springer Goes After iOS 9 Ad Blockers in New Legal Battle
No. Try playing some video content on C4, if you're running any kind of adblock, it refuses to play. There was a bit of an 'arms race' back when it was first introduced between C4 and developers on the internet. C4 won, adblockers simply won't work on their site, video ads are unskippable and every 5 mins or so.

tomtoise··on Details of UK website visits 'to be stored for year'
"For more intrusive surveillance - involving the detailed content of the communications - security services need to obtain a warrant."

The way this is worded makes me wonder if the 'detailed content' will be harvested with everything else and then retroactively looked at with a warrant.

tomtoise··on Introducing the Plex Media Player
That looks like an amazing server.

What's their policy on P2P traffic? I host fairly large data sets for analysis at work and the most stable way to get them from one place to another is via packing them into torrents. Would this be frowned on / throttled?

tomtoise··on Introducing the Plex Media Player
I think Kimsufi works pretty well. I think their data cap is 5tb a month for about £10, so it's hardly bored billionaire status.

EDIT - Unless you meant consuming from mobile, in which case I pretty much agree.

tomtoise··on Austerity and mental health in the U.K.
I'm not too sure what you mean by a generation completely dependent on government. Or high sense of entitlement.

23 year old graduate here from the UK - never touched welfare in my life, never had to. But happy to pay tax for those that need welfare. It's hardly a life choice.

tomtoise··on A Linux botnet is launching crippling DDoS attacks in excess of 150Gbps
Or to troll. A while ago, skype had a vulnerability that let people resolve skype names to IP addresses and since skype is the default communication of lazy gamers, it was pretty trivial to work out the correct IP address to poke. Other methods used to include hooking your Xbox360 up to your laptop and bridging your connection, running Cain and Abel and finding the addresses of opponents that way in games like Halo etc. No idea what the scene is like now that we're on xbones and ps4s, I pretty much exclusively game on PC now. There are plenty of services online that let you snatch IP addresses by sending a link to a 'friend', you could then keep tabs on them that way.
