tomp··on "When you upload or input information through Firefox, you grant us a license"
There were a lot of previous threads, none of which caught any real traction, because they didn't highlight exactly the controversial part like my title did.
tomp··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
> complete lie

I disagree. I definitely editorialized it to make it attention-grabbing and point out the essence, because I wanted to raise awareness and spur discussion.

But they do own it in the digital sense (i.e. "piracy is not stealing" sense). You get to keep your own copy, but they also get a copy and they own that copy.

> help you navigate, experience, and interact with online content

These terms are vague enough to allow pretty much everything. Google would argue that tracking your information so they target ads is "helping you navigate" ("you see, sponsored links are more relevant!"). As well as "lets train an AI model that helps users experience the internet!"

tomp··on Texas banned abortion, then sepsis rates soared
How so?

"kill" = "cause to cease living", "living" is pretty well defined (it's not entirely obvious for edge cases, like viruses, but quite obvious for cells)

"human" = pretty obvious as well, simply look at genetics. I mean, obviously an offspring of two humans is a human (for the next 100k+ years)

tomp··on Texas banned abortion, then sepsis rates soared
Well the scientific basis is that you're killing another human (the fetus, scientifically, is another human, with its own genetics).

Of course, you still need a non-scientific, moral basis to decide whether murder is bad, and other circumstances pertaining to abortion (in general and each case specifically).

tomp··on Indigenous engineers are using AI to preserve their culture
Terrible title. Every engineer is indigenous somewhere.
tomp··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
do you have any studies that back that up?

IMO the chime, if anything, decreases safety (it interrupts the driver's attention)

tomp··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
It's literally illegal.

In the EU, it's illegal to sell cars that don't have back camera, not beeping if seatbelt not fastened, and not beeping if speed limit is exceeded.

tomp··on UnitedHealth Is Sick of Everyone Complaining About Its Claim Denials
I could hardly disagree more.

The by far best system I've witnessed was the Swiss healthcare system, which is NOT a single-payer system.

Some features: (1) health insurance is obligatory for all residents (2) must be private, cannot be purchased/sponsored by company (3) minimum coverage is specified by law (4) health insurers are private companies, often (mostly? always?) non-profit (5) they cannot reject applicants, and can only discriminate (by price) on: (a) age, (b) residence (i.e. more expensive city/area => more expensive health insurance) (6) all procedures are paid - 10% copay is mandatory (up to a certain yearly amount) (7) health insurers make extra money on better health insurance ("private coverage") offering better service, more experienced doctors, private hospital rooms, extra coverage (e.g. for mental health, abroad etc.) etc. - those can discriminate on much more features, including existing health conditions sex (e.g. for young women it's more expensive, because of pregnancy)

tomp··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
ok thanks, I did, here: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-J6-REPORT/html-submi...

it mentions exactly 7 people that carried guns:

Garret Miller

Christopher Kuehne

Guy Reffitt

Jerod Thomas Bargar

Mark Andre Mazza

Lonnie Leroy Coffman

Joe Biggs

also, Alex Kirk Harkrider brought a tomahawk axe

not much of an insurrection, we could say a mostly peaceful one

tomp··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
What kinds of weapons fid they have?

If it was an insurrection, why didn’t they use them?

Or was it the peaceful kind?

tomp··on Why is Cloudflare Pages' bandwidth unlimited?
The real answer:

If CloudFlare serves a lot of traffic (i.e. people on the internet are requesting stuff from CloudFlare's servers), they get better peering agreements (i.e. pay less) from internet network providers.

When "normal" people/companies connect to the internet, they're paying for the connection. Regional ISPs likewise pay Tier 1 network providers (i.e. "global internet backbone") for the connection, and are charged by bandwidth. When "popular" companies connect to the internet, they don't pay - e.g. a lot of ISPs would host Netflix servers for free (that way, they avoid having to pay for Netflix traffic to Tier 1 providers, but can serve it locally instead).

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tier_1_network

tomp··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
No, the point is that the preferences of "average" people (Brexit, Trump) are surprising for the "elites".
tomp··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
> "Average" people are the norm, the reality that "not average" people will have to deal with for the rest of their lives.

What are you talking about?!

I'm a highly educated, "high class" (professional career) person, and I've been socially segregated from "average" people since high school (so, since I was 15). Literally primary school was the last time I ever interacted with "average" people in a meaningful way (beyond "hi, thanks" to the supermarket cashier/bank teller).

Society truly does segregate you by social class, and unless you truly seek different classes (which I don't really, I'm a geek so my interests are quite niche) you don't "normally" interact.

No wonder that "elitist" politicians are so removed from the "average" people (hint: Brexit, Trunmp). Thank god for Twitter, allowing to break social bubbles at least a little bit!

tomp··on AI founders will learn the bitter lesson

tomp··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
You're wrong on both counts.

Fining for blocking intersection isn't stochastic. You simply don't enter the intersection if you're not sure you'll be able to exit it. You wait at green light. Simple. That's how people in London and Zurich drive.

Congestion automatically reduces the number of cars (because they literally can't get into the city!), without congestion pricing. If you reduce 3 lanes to 2, then... 2 lanes will be blocked, instead of 3, so there will be complete gridlock & congestion - for cars. But not for busses! So public transport will work, even thought private is gridlocked. Combine this with (1) - empty intersections - and busses can drive very well!

tomp··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
All these issues have better solutions than congestion pricing.

Cars blocking intersections and/or sidewalks can easily be solved with automated traffic fines - that's how Zurich and London does it (the former without any congestion pricing!)

Many cities also have special lanes only useable by some classes of vehicles - e.g. busses (or sometimes taxis as well) - I guess ambulances could also use those.

In fact, congestion pricing doesn't solve any of those problems, it's just an irrelevant (as in, it doesn't solve any specific problem directly) regressive tax to "drive less".

tomp··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
Um, it’s beef. It can be eaten raw. Ever heard of carpaccio?!?

Only two reasons to ever cook beef: (1) taste (2) quality

tomp··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
That doesn’t make sense. It’s beef.

If you can serve a steak medium, then you can also grind the steak, cook it medium and serve it.

tomp··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
Wow, what's wrong with burgers?

I mean, certainly you can get bad meat, and maybe it's easier to conceal in a burger than in a steak, but ... how about literally all other processed meat that is invariably processed more than burgers? Salami, sausages, hot dogs, ...

I personally love burger, and consider it one of the finest foods.

Fortunately, there's a very easy way to know the quality of a burger - if they ask you, how well you want it done, it's high quality! Shitty burger places like McDonalds and Burger King don't want to risk selling you a medium-done burger... Funny enough, UK is one of the better places for high-quality burger, much better than e.g. Switzerland or Slovenia! My favourite in London is (was? 2019) Honest Burger...

tomp··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
It’s obviously different than in Germany, where nazis were (mostly) homegrown.

I know several second/hand accounts (i.e. from people who had it happen to their family). Murders, theft, barbarism (stabbing a pregnant woman in her stomach). Some during the war, some after when communists won.

As I said, terrible times. War. No good choices, especially without foresight. I just wish people didn’t praise communists as much as they do, and vilify their opponents.

Unlikely. The leading candidate is already being investigated by the police.

Chances are he’ll be jailed or otherwise prevented from running.
