tommy_axle··on Show HN: Possibly the most comprehensive design system collection
Mantine.dev is another one for this list.
tommy_axle··on OpenCart Vulnerability Discussion on GitHub
Thanks, I didn't realize. The only thing with PR 12951 is that one of the invalid replacements covered on the other PR was missed (https://github.com/mhcwebdesign/opencart/blob/bc60f21aa2ece0...). Normally I'd just report it to the project but given the behavior and language observed surrounding this, why even bother.
tommy_axle··on OpenCart Vulnerability Discussion on GitHub
Either way the PR (https://github.com/opencart/opencart/pull/12949/files) should have been accepted. Clearly the [^a-zA-z0-9_] regex will not do what it appears to be intended to do without the delimiters.
tommy_axle··on Reasonable GPUs
Checked out vast.ai but you can get down to the ~$0.34/hr at Runpod depending on how much vram you need.

tommy_axle··on Server-side rendering is a better choice for many applications (2020)
That's what frameworks like NextJS do.
tommy_axle··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on

tommy_axle··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
Not necessarily, if the messages are analyzed there's usually an intent (solicitation, scam, etc.) so you can filter based on the content similar to email. The shorter lead forms without a message to analyze are a bit different since you can only go based on IP, email, phone but it's possible.
tommy_axle··on Unmask Website Security, Performance, UX, and Other Issues From One Place

Similar concept to react-icons (https://react-icons.github.io/react-icons/)in that regard.

tommy_axle··on The Fear of Shipping (2012)
Why another month or two? To add that one more feature that you think it needs, more polish? If it's stable and solves the core problem you set out to solve then ship today. Try to have a life is short mentality :)
tommy_axle··on 300ms Faster: Reducing Wikipedia's total blocking time
Makes sense since the Moto G is also what Lighthouse and a lot of tools driven by it use. So PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev), the Lighthouse developer in Chrome tab and even external services like https://totalwebtool.com all generally evaluate mobile performance using it to simulate a slower experience.
tommy_axle··on Google Analytics 4 was frustrating, so we built our own analytics service
Yep, I just setup Umami (https://umami.is/) yesterday and added it to some properties alongside GA to see how it goes. It's a very simple interface with everything I really need for web analytics so I'm enjoying it so far. I self-hosted so if it sticks around the only thing I might look at is having a replica running for it (already put a high frequency backup in place).
tommy_axle··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
It depends on the project but a couple things that would help me pick MySQL (MariaDB) more often (wish list) are:

- Row-level security (RLS) - depending on the tenancy and DB level safe-guards you need Postgres supports it and MariaDB doesn't - transactions for schema changes - Postgres (and even sqlite) support this but MariaDB doesn't. Due to not having it, if there's a faulty migration manual clean-ups might be required to get it back to the state you need

tommy_axle··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Yes, we do this using https://gitea.io/en-us/ on a private server (firewall, backups and a replica) for most projects. Github is only used when it's required by a stakeholder.
tommy_axle··on Ink: React for interactive command-line apps
I'll need to try Ink but you were also able to do this with react + blessed via https://github.com/Yomguithereal/react-blessed
tommy_axle··on Can Your Site Handle Going Viral?
Going viral might not be the top priority to invet a lot of resources into but maybe having an action plan for things you can do if signs are pointing to it might not be a bad idea. Something like enable caching can be a quick task to survive a traffic spike without going all the way to worrying about invalidation.
tommy_axle··on CLI tricks every developer should know
Correct, I don't think it was mentioned in the article but this was geared towards and *nix platform. It's not only shells but anything that uses readline (the library that implements these shortcuts), e.g. mysql/sqlite cli client, node and many others.
tommy_axle··on Is Gmail killing independent email?
Maybe not even going to fully ML/AI but definitely some NLP to understand the intent behind the spam. It's sort of like the approach taken with https://spampatrol.io for forms. Probably can use it for email too.
