tomjen··on Why aren't push reel mowers more common? Here's a review of one
Unless the grass is long enough to need a scythe, you should do fine with a push mover - just go over the area a couple of times and don't worry about an even cut the first time.
tomjen··on Startup Programming Jobs: C++, C#, and Java Reign Supreme?
Ocaml, Haskell and SML all compile to native binary code.
tomjen··on Dead man's switch via email
He specifically points out that you should encrypt your emails.
tomjen··on Yet Another Critique My Startup: Face Detection & Photo Organization
Make the client in something cross platform - you might want to try Scala, which compiles to Java byte code but suck less - an OSX client is a big turnoff, at least for me.
tomjen··on Windows 7's milestones to nowhere
As a customer, I will not use a system with "growing pains", unless it gave me some huge benefit. If they are unable to make it stable, at least make it great while it runs.
tomjen··on If you need the approval of the platform vendor to ship an app, then it isn't a platform
Only if there is only on of the service. There is only one Amazon cloud storage, but there are thousands of other online storage places so switching is easy.

On the other hand there is only one IPhone, and because it uses coca switching is difficult.

tomjen··on 15 Answers to Creationist Nonsense
I have flaged this, it does not belong on Hacker News.
tomjen··on Congratulations Jeff: Spawning a New Process
Yes.
tomjen··on Ask HN: How do you identify a great software developer in an interview?
Set up a competition geeks would be interested in, then try to hire the bests (for your definition of bests).
tomjen··on Should IT unionize?
So the idiots can leech of me? Fuck that.
tomjen··on Target Settles Accessibility Lawsuit for $6 Million
Criminal. Just because you own a website doesn't mean that everybody has the right to use it. The judges should be thrown on the street or better yet in prison for criminal abuse of power.
tomjen··on The Economics of Pay Incentives: a 116% Productivity increase
That story was interesting, but it is properly worth pointing out that the productivity was fruit picking, a line of work were the results are easy to measure and compare, the requirements of skill are modest and the difference between the highest and lowest performer small. Care should therefore be taken before this is applied to other areas where these assumptions no longer holds, such as software development.
tomjen··on Carbs kill cells that regulate appetite
Do'h
tomjen··on Ask HN: What does Ruby have that Python doesn't?
You can add inline c to ruby for the few places where speed matters.
tomjen··on Dying baby saved when doc designed & built dialysis machine from scratch in garage
He properly decided to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. Which is the only way to deal with any bureaucratic organization.
tomjen··on What explains the growing gap in wages? Computers.
As a European, I am not appalled by the fact that you educate as many girls as boys.

What makes me wonder is why you Bachelor is 4 years, will ours is only 3.

tomjen··on Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund
If you can become the platform everybody is building their webapp on, you are going to be the new Microsoft.
tomjen··on Dealing With Bad Apples
If he has a communication problem, try to give him a copy of "How to win friends and influence people"
tomjen··on Bank regulators close IndyMac
FDIC will not be allowed to fail. If they can't pay, the government will give them the needed cash. They have to or they are toast.
tomjen··on As E-bay is to auctions, E-Lottery would be to lotteries.
The game need not be dictated by chance - you could make the players answer a _really_ simple question, and only tickets with the right answer could win.

Your tax problem still stands though, but the diminished value just as much a problem with cash winning.

tomjen··on At $100 for Tank of Gas, Some Choke on ‘Fill It’
The funny thing is that the same could be achieved with stilts.
tomjen··on Why I Still Use Windows 95
There are still people who swear to a fountain pen. Not all old tech is useless.
tomjen··on I Freed Myself From E-Mail’s Grip
Solution: Turn off your IM, and don't respond to facebook messages. IM is optional, if you don't turn it on nobody will contact you.

That said I find a phone call even worse.

tomjen··on A company making $100 million a year disintegrated when Google took away their business model.
As they should. The company did not add any value.
tomjen··on Revisiting the XML Angle Bracket Tax
XML can be parsed by every language, but other than that they stink compared to s-expressions.
tomjen··on Interactive experiment to predict your choices based on artificial neural networks
Didn't work too well. Also the last 5 or so pictures didn't show up.
tomjen··on How many of you would use a digital library?
It would be possible to clearly watermark a PDF file with the serial number of the person who checked it out of the library. That way if it is leaked it shouldn't be too difficult to find the person who leaked it.

I would definitely use such a library if it existed, provided that it wasn't too expensive and had novels or books I could not find at my local (and free) public library.

tomjen··on [dead]
Could you please also make sure that I can download the PDF without having to sign up?
tomjen··on Java finally open-sourced. Does anyone still care?
Java 7 should add closures. And in the mean time, most of the times you would be using closures, you can use anonymous inner classes.
tomjen··on Yahoo!, eBay and Amazon: The three survivors
Economy of scale isn't total bullshit. A factory can make specific widget vastly cheaper than a craftsman.
