tomjen··on A programmer's view of the Universe, part 2: Mario Kart
I constantly remember the story of that damn drill, precisely because it is such a good metaphor. It might be worth learning that style of writing.
tomjen··on How to Stay Alive in a Terrorized Hotel
Attack at night with silenced machine guns - any luck and you have the first ten floors before anybody realize what is happening.
tomjen··on Only the Rich Can Afford It. Should Taxpayers Back It?
In Denmark that would be an upper middle class car.
tomjen··on Is Email = Efail?
CTRL+A, Del. You are never going to catch up in time anyway.
tomjen··on Let's End Adolescence
I don't believe that a low birth rate says anything about when people grow up. If it did, teenage mothers would be the most responsible people in society.
tomjen··on Why I Ban Laptops in My Classroom
I would have voted him up if he was doing AI - the most impressive way to get a phd in AI would be to have your creation defend your thesis for you.
tomjen··on The end of an era - Windows 3.x
Well it does become abandonware, but that hardly matters - it is still illegal to copy it although I don't think Microsoft is going to complain too much.
tomjen··on Songkick's most common feature request? Listings for countries other than US/UK.
Well yes only selling stuff to the US is something that can really turn me of a site, even if their services later becomes available to the rest of us. This isn't the real world, so stop treating us as second rate citizens.
tomjen··on Microsoft to Give Free Software to Startups
Because unlike cigarettes nobody dies, and a company (thankfully) has the right to make money.
tomjen··on Clojure Lisp and a modern GUI
Almost nobody mixes lisp (or derivatives of lisp) and XML - sexpressions are the typical representation of lisp code and are isomorphic to xml.
tomjen··on Rejected from YC last night... got anchor client this morning
Well you are partly right, but you can get a lot further and get there faster if you do have a plan.
tomjen··on Don’t Mistake Ambition for Entitlement
Well all that proves is that the average person is an idiot. We knew that.
tomjen··on Don’t Mistake Ambition for Entitlement
Yes they do exist. They exist because those people are us. Nobody argues that the WSJ was wrong about the data they collected, but they were horribly wrong with their conclusions and assignment of blame.
tomjen··on Joel is giving away his software to Y Combinator startups
Mantis is okay - we used it for a (school) project last year, but for what we needed it for it was overkill.
tomjen··on Joel is giving away his software to Y Combinator startups
Not really - Joel is smart. He knows that the marginal cost of a frogbuz account is almost nothing but that the price - if the company is acquired - is an entire company that use his software.
tomjen··on Everything you know about CSS is Wrong - The changes tables layout will bring
It may be true that you mix semantics when you mix tables and html, but you lose little if you do it while you use RoR/Django or any other of the frameworks where there is a central template because you still only need to make changes in _one_ file to affect the hole site.
tomjen··on Unexploded Bombs in Germany: The Lethal Legacy of World War II
The Belgians have the same problem with a lot of the shells from the first war lying in the forests - only most of them are actually gas shells, slowly rusting.
tomjen··on Ask HN: Why haven't signup confirmation emails died yet?
As a user if I am actually going to give you money, I would think your service was worth giving my email address out for.

On the other hand I have properly signed up for more than 10 times as many free services as I pay for.

tomjen··on Ask HN: Googling your name shows a lot of relevant online presence: do you look less professional?
I sure hope they google me - I am apparently with Copenhagen Business school, a filmmaker, a photographer and (twice) a carpenter. Well at least I am no longer a gay porn star.
tomjen··on Ask YC: What are you working on these days?
Woha, you have a spec - I figured there wouldn't be any of that on Hacker News.
tomjen··on Name Recessions After People
Yes, but not just some people, the people who caused the recessions in the first place.
tomjen··on Hosted Continuous Integration (The future of Agile)
_Please_ don't make more links to private betas, wait until they go public.
tomjen··on Effect of the Depression on Technology
There is a large segment of the young people who grow up with access to video, games and music for free and who don't really have a lot of money so they feel that it is wrong if these things aren't available to them.

Second the price for a given item (when traded freely in a free market) is generally declining over time and since the marginal price of all most all web offerings are zero (for all practical purposes) it is possible to underbid the competition all the way down to zero, landing it in the same category as the aforementioned music.

And I don't know if that is a good thing or not (though I suspect it isn't, at least for most start ups) but if that doesn't matter if that is the direction we are heading.

tomjen··on This terrifying moment is our one chance for a new world
>based on fairness instead of naked greed

Would somebody please send that man a copy of "Atlas Shrugged"? And to every school child too.

tomjen··on Ireland’s talent meltdown
Ireland is the preferred tax heaven for many European companies.
tomjen··on $700bn Bailout is shot down by House of Rep Vote (205-228), US stock market plummets
Well, we will hack through it.
tomjen··on Rebuttal to "A hacker's loneliness"
If you want it to be yes.
tomjen··on Chinese Say They're Building 'Impossible' Space Drive, the EmDrive ('Relativity Drive')
They don't care. If just one of these projects pay of, the rest is peanuts.
tomjen··on Posterous: I went to etc., can I still work for you?
Out of curiosity, were does one obtain a classical education?
tomjen··on Japanese women like protected sites
The best way to confirm the identity would properly be to check peoples passports/drivers license. That would prevent trolls.
