tomjen2··on The Next Hot e-Reader: The iPhone
I don't think it is a licensing issue, there are plenty of online book sellers who would have been happy to provide Apple with a way to sell ebooks on the Iphone, Apple properly just didn't believe it would be worth enough.
tomjen2··on Ask HN: What would you do with 1,000 free EC2 hours on AWS? 1,000,0000?
You are right on both counts. I mentally misplaced the comma somewhere, but the point that that machine is no more powerful that what I guess most people here have stacked around somewhere.

As for the generic algorithm, you are _also_ right.

tomjen2··on Ask HN: What would you do with 1,000 free EC2 hours on AWS? 1,000,0000?
A thousand hours is just above 10 days (assuming you run on a single CPU), so I guess most of us have a spare computer lying about which means that it should be able to handle this data.

As for the 1,000,000 hours? A genetic algorithm that runs through all the publically available data on deals made by the government looking for anything out of the ordinary to flesh out corruption.

tomjen2··on Dustin Curtis's new web app
As long as you are only sending charectors on the paper, you might be right, but you can send physical items in a letter - unlike in an email.

And the set of people I want to send mail to intersected with the set of people who have the faintest idea what public/private keys are is the empty set. So that won't fly.

In addition, the fact that I am willing to pay a dollar to send a message is a statement that you might want to take five seconds to look at the letter, whereas most emails aren't worth taking a look at.

tomjen2··on Stop obfuscating your email address - a geek mistake
Unless you are really desperate for people to contact you, forcing them to "decode" the email address might be a nice velvet rope that keeps out those who aren't worthy of your time.

Obviously this might not work if you have a customer support email.

tomjen2··on Scamville: The Social Gaming Ecosystem of Hell
They properly didn't know whom Arrington is. Most people don't care.
tomjen2··on Ask HN: Can you make a voting/rating system without logins?
The dorm I live in is behind a NAT, so we all have a shared IP.
tomjen2··on Ask HN: Can you make a voting/rating system without logins?
Interesting site, but just a friendly word of warning: Pik (with one k) is the Danish word for 'cock', in the porn sense.
tomjen2··on How A Nerd Decides To Get The H1N1 Vaccine
What side effects did you get from the shot?
tomjen2··on How A Nerd Decides To Get The H1N1 Vaccine
That might work for your, but I have the interesting problem of not being in the risk group in my country but for some reason being in the risk group in the US. So which government should you trust?
tomjen2··on Tell HN: My 'mystery project': I couldn't sleep, so I backed up GeoCities
Super nice work.

I wonder about two things:

Did anybody try to contact Yahoo to get a copy of the server content?

If you where running out of machines, why not try Amazons ECC? Would be pretty sweet having web 1.0 saved by web 2.0 tech.

tomjen2··on What Startups Are Really Like
Thanks for those links. Hopefully I will now fall for some other traps.
tomjen2··on Hulu’s Obituary
That is true, but would you really want to pay for a service that also beamed ads at you?

Most people on the internet are willing to watch ads, plenty of people are willing to pay for stuff.

But when you start something that competes with something else that costs money and your selling point is that your service is free, how can you be surprised when people don't want to pay?

tomjen2··on Hulu’s Obituary
That might be true, but those people are frankly stupid.
tomjen2··on Hulu to Charge Users in 2010
It will be worth it if they make it as good as cable tv with out ads. Unfortunately they will properly just double the amount of ads.
tomjen2··on Why TV, not Facebook or Twitter, is still revolutionizing the world
Not necessarily, just because we have access to better tools in the west doesn't mean that television can't be a benefit to those that have previously had access to none.

I believe that, if choosen wisely, television can improve your knowledge of the world, give you new ideas and stimulate creativity.

tomjen2··on What should you say to a parent scared of Wi-Fi?
Properly, but then the parents would have attended the school in the first place.
tomjen2··on Marketing insights from an infomercial consultant
Pretty interesting, but I hope no company here is ever forced to take his advice.
tomjen2··on Reexamining what makes health care so expensive.
You seem to be right, that would be what is happening.

So, how do we mass produce medicine?

tomjen2··on Why CDC says this year's flu season is "very sobering"
Yeah, that makes sense - sometimes I really want to smash the media guys so hard.

But I also wonder if I person dies in a hospital, isn't shouldn't there be a legal course of death on the death certificate? Because then we might have something to compare with.

tomjen2··on The risk psychology of the anti-vaccine movement
Well, no they have to catch it from somebody that _do_ have it in the first place, so the real culprit is those who have the decease currently.

But yeah, statistically you are most likely to get to sick if you aren't vaccinated but at a certain point vaccination doesn't make sense at all.

tomjen2··on Ask HN: Wrist Pain
Don't down mod the parent - he is only referring to the old comic about what happens when you ask medical advice on a forum.

In this case, I think he is wrong though - the people on this board knows more about this particular aliment than do most doctors.

tomjen2··on Wt: A C++ web toolkit
But that would be the upscale embedded market - your ordinary remote control, microwave oven, light sensor, etc would not need an embedded web server.
tomjen2··on Steps to be taken to incorporate a new company in India
Sure tax gets much simpler that way, but given that I can start a company in the UK for a pound, it feels foolish to do it in Denmark (could also be that I love London more than Denmark).
tomjen2··on PS: I Love You. Get Your Free Email at Hotmail
As smart as it was, I have yet to find some software that adds tags to the messages that I don't hate. Mostly because the kind of software that does stuff like that isn't the kind of software I would want to use - but it is pushed on me anyway.

Even the mail stuff in my Ipod Touch does that by default (I turned it off, but but that isn't going to do much for the stuff I receive).

tomjen2··on Steps to be taken to incorporate a new company in India
Well it is cheaper than Denmark. If you want the company to assume liability they have to have at least 160000kr - which is something like $32000. Not all of it has to be in cash, but there has to be enough to pay taxes of any income including the initial founds.

Now if you are prepared to assume the liability yourself it gets a lot cheaper, but at that point why start a company.

tomjen2··on ‘Known Software Bug’ Disrupts Brain-Tumor Zapping
The problem with that is that not using the machine can also cost lives.
tomjen2··on ‘Known Software Bug’ Disrupts Brain-Tumor Zapping
That was exactly what I told one of my professors. She pointed out that then I would also deprive the users of the benefit.

Never mind that - let somebody really good work on that.

tomjen2··on Best Programming Language for Startups
No, not really but given the amount of meta programming DDH made to make ROR possible, I am not so sure.
tomjen2··on Kathy Sierra on Feeling Better is Better [video].
Is there something wrong with that link? It is only two minutes long for me.
