This plan actually makes no sense. Overage charges are the same rate ($10 / GB), so why am I buying a "plan" at all? Why don't they just charge $10 * x gigs / month instead of all this buying / refunding business?
tomhschmidt··on Scribd Raises $22M for Its Subscription E-Book Service
Pretty misleading to say "Any Device" when the service doesn't work with ebook readers, arguably the best devices for reading ebooks.
tomhschmidt··on Peter Thiel Planning to Live 120 Years
>Thiel said he also follows a Paleo diet, doesn’t eat sugar, drinks red wine and runs regularly.

But red wine has sugar in it...

tomhschmidt··on Show HN: SurgeProtector – escape from Uber surge pricing
Sorry, the text is just inaccurate. We deeplink to Uber with the non-surging location. I'll update it.
tomhschmidt··on Facebook Rooms
If you screenshot the pic or save it to your camera roll, Rooms will automatically add you to the room. It's effectively the same as taking a picture of the QR code.
tomhschmidt··on Own It for Life – A curated list of durable products
I'd love to see small write-ups or justifications as to why these particular products were selected. Also, I'm having some issue with the infinite scrolling.
tomhschmidt··on Show HN: Famous Outfits
I like the concept - most of these kinds of posts are done completely ad hoc and are distributed across all of the various men's fashion forums - but the URL made me think this was going to be a breakdown of famous outfits worn by characters in TV and movies (e.g. The Driver's outfit from Drive).

Also, most of the outfits you picked are pretty stale. Go for one that are more exciting or with pieces that would be more difficult to figure out.

Did you even try it? The header reappears when you start scrolling up - no need to scroll back to the top.
tomhschmidt··on Dropbox acquires Hackpad (YC W12)
The difference is that Search was enough to sustain Google and still is its cash cow. They branched out due to interest, not out of necessity. Dropbox's current business will not sustain and they NEED these acquisitions to find viable business models for the long haul.

What I don't understand about these acquisitions is how tangential it is to Dropbox's original value prop of being a "dumb" folder that would magically sync all of your files and stay out of your way. Now, instead of Dropbox passively running in the background and letting me do my thing, they want me to start actively engaging with the software.

I agree that it's necessary and overall a smart move, but still a very large and difficult pivot to make.

tomhschmidt··on S.F. cracks down on Airbnb rentals
What's the rationale behind having laws like these in place? Is it protectionism for the hotel industry, or is it more intended to protect apartment renters from unintended liability issues?
tomhschmidt··on What happened when the CEO of a Boston burrito chain became an Uber driver
That's not a very good comparison. Many of these costs you'll incur, regardless of whether or not you drive for Uber (insurance, tabs, tax, depreciation, etc.)

To actually calculate the costs of driving for Uber, we should only be looking at the variable, or the per-mile cost, which as far as I can tell should be:

- Gas - Maintenance - Loss in resale value

tomhschmidt··on Node OS
Could you elaborate on the some of the benefits of having a dedicated OS for Node projects? I'm confused by the website

Linux Kernel NodeOS is a full OS built on top of the Linux kernel

As are many other operating systems...

NodeJS Runtime Node is the primary runtime — no bash here

NPM Packages NodeOS uses NPM as its primary package manager

You can change both of these on other OSes, no? Also, are these really large pain points?

Hosted on Github Open and easy to contribute to — pull request friendly

Not really a feature

tomhschmidt··on I wrote the Anarchist Cookbook in 1969. Now I see its premise as flawed
Could you elaborate on this?
tomhschmidt··on Cicada 3301
Seconded. How fruitful can recruiting on /b/ be anyway?
tomhschmidt··on PS4 UX is powered by WebGL
Really? I find the Steam app on OSX awful - super slow and unresponsive. They do this in some of their games too - DotA 2 comes to mind - and it's so obvious that's not native when you're using it.
tomhschmidt··on Poll: Would you vote online if you could?
I wonder if there's some way to be transparent in an electronic / online voting system. Maybe the government sends a UUID or hash to your email after you vote, and later releases a dataset of which UUIDs voted for which candidates. This way, you can verify that your vote was counted and that all votes sum correctly.
tomhschmidt··on I’m Thinking. Please. Be Quiet.
Only the median was the same. The way I interpret this is that a quiet work environment sort of "unlocked" the ability to see the shortcut for a small number of workers. However, most still used the normal method and had the same performance as the workers with music, thus the same median.
tomhschmidt··on 29% of Bay Area's particulate air pollution comes from across the Pacific (2010)
I prefer to blame 串儿 and excessive 中南海 smokers
tomhschmidt··on 29% of Bay Area's particulate air pollution comes from across the Pacific (2010)
A lot of this pollution is just a remnant from when China's economy was still largely manufacturing-based. Now that this percentage is beginning to change, (mid 30s in mid 2000s down to high 20s now), the government seems earnest in their attempts to curb pollution.

tomhschmidt··on The American-Western European Values Gap
Interesting that the US believes they shape their own destiny or that they are the product of their own work, yet the 'cultural superiority' question seems to indicate that they don't necessarily value what they have produced.

tomhschmidt··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
Really? I live in the Bay Area and the ones that I've seen have pretty poor amenities. Even rather famous ones like Hacker Dojo look like just some cheap tables and chairs thrown together.
tomhschmidt··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
Yes! I totally agree! It doesn't even have to be intended as a coffee shop - just like a coworking space where I can show up, plug my laptop in to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, sit down at a comfy office chair and desk, and work for a few hours. Would gladly pay for that service.
tomhschmidt··on Why Chinese people will drive the next bull market in bitcoin
>5. Chinese techies are used to spending an ungodly amount of time mining virtual coins in online games.

It's like he doesn't even know how Bitcoins work.
