tomc1985··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
The only honest mission statement is, "we exist to make as much money as possible"

And until shareholder supremacy is no longer a thing, anything else is a lie

Support your favorite B-corp, folks

tomc1985··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Why must we in software constantly cater to "average people"? Screw them.

The everyman ruined crypto just like the everyman ruined software.

tomc1985··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Hah, does anyone actually believe a company's "mission statement"?
tomc1985··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
While you are correct, this is the logic that is used to guilt-slash-shame folks who do not want to get involved into getting involved. It is one of the many sources of intense polarization that we suffer from today, and it forces people to take uninformed stances on things that makes them little more than mindless footsoldiers for causes that need a nuanced touch.

tomc1985··on Extreme heat, drought will permanently scar California and its social fabric
Is it really that little? The last few droughts to roll through California have been a non-issue. But maybe that's because domestic (non-agricultural) water consumption is like 5% of total water use
tomc1985··on Extreme heat, drought will permanently scar California and its social fabric
San Diego got its desal plant in the husk of an old coal plant, and it has been the GREATEST thing. We are much closer to water independence than anyone else in the state and not having to listen about constant drought nagging has been FANTASTIC
tomc1985··on Unity is laying off hundreds of employees
I've met a few, and they are a rare treasure, but in nearly every case my time with them is limited as something always happens that sees them gone. Whether it's retirement, getting ousted by the board, selling the company, or death (by cancer), it seems like whoever is brought in afterwards is always worse.

It really seems like wherever I get hired, the situation always changes dramatically after 1-2 years and the workplace goes downhill. My work life is like a continuous series of bait-and-switches. It is really, really tiresome.

Here is to hoping that self-employment is not so dramatic.

tomc1985··on Unity is laying off hundreds of employees
I have learned the hard way that CEOs are some of the most dishonest people on the planet, right up there next to salespeople.
tomc1985··on One man’s fight to end California’s ban on ferrets
A couple of housecats multiplied and wiped out a bunch of native species on California's San Clemente island a while back. A friend of mine was a contractor doing work for the Navy on that island (it's USG property) and told me stories about how some of the other folks stationed there would grab a shotgun and Jeep and go cat huntin'

tomc1985··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
You are right in that I don't do rallies. But anger at the situation led me to join this one, where I was promptly reminded why I find political types so repulsive.
tomc1985··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
If only this message was spread more widely!
tomc1985··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
I attended a rally and march on Roe v Wade last night, and it was alarming to hear just how many other issues rally leaders tossed into the ring, to a large cheering crowd. Some of these were things have a legitimate intersection with reproductive rights -- minority access to equal healthcare, or the various kinds of service ghettos that spring up minority neighborhoods, or other issues SCOTUS has indicated it wants to weigh in on -- but several had nothing to do with reproductive rights: ACAB, or reparations, for example.

And then, to make it even worse, they went on to tell the crowd that you HAVE to care about these issues if you care about Roe v Wade. And if you don't, then "get the hell out of our way". So either you agree 100% with the hivemind and their dated BLM script, or fuck you. To say nothing of the fact that the person shouting this stuff seemed to cherish just how many different labels she could attach to herself to appear more credible.

I consider myself a staunch independent and this was downright insulting. The operatives instigating all of this do not want people making rational points with their minds, they want a mental hegemony to act as a bedrock for their political war machine.

Given that and how political discussions seem to be playing out everywhere, I don't think anyone should be supporting these kinds of discussions at work. Should companies willingly allow space for crowdsourced political brainwashing?

tomc1985··on EverQuest’s long, strange 20-year trip still has no end in sight (2019)
How the hell is Lost Ark so popular? The stereotype-laden jankfest where the social hubs are full of town guards that groan orgasmically nearly every time you walk past them? Hell, I can't think of any game that placed so much emphasis on bodily noises. The game where every fun little privilege seems to be a time-limited rental?

Then again I couldn't stand the awfulness for more than a few hours. Maybe there's a gem in there but damn if it isn't rough on the outside.

tomc1985··on State Machines in Ruby: An Introduction
Funny, I have spent a ton of time around Rails code where I dearly wished we had a state machine, because the alternative was an unorganized cluster of home-grown "state transition" glue without any consistent way of handling it, with all the weird-ass edge cases and split-brain BS that come with it.

tomc1985··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
I feel like that's true for most of the consumer, but if you look around the shoe company might have some classics that are seemingly eternal. For example: Adidas Gazelles vs Adidas Sambas. Chuck Taylors might be another one.
tomc1985··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
I don't think Post will ever get rid of Grape Nuts, it has been this eternal staple of store shelves that my parents would bring out as some sort of breakfast cereal boogieman if I misbehaved. Lord knows who's actually buying the stuff besides you, but someone is.
tomc1985··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
Of course, survivorship bias and all that. But when I look at most communities of old folks, everyone else seems a lot more... decrepit
tomc1985··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
So where's the schizophrenia epidemic among pot-smoking hippies? It's had like 50 years to surface, man.

In all seriousness, there are a number of cohorts where this should be showing up with some regularity. Can you point me towards any of them?

All the hippies I know are still out there hippie-ing and living their lives, going to Dead shows, and so on. And, from my experience, they seem to be an unusually vigorous group for being so old.

tomc1985··on Fear and Loathing in FreeBSD

tomc1985··on Fear and Loathing in FreeBSD
One of the definitions on urbandictionary supports the usage as we see it here:

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Fear%20and%2... (second one down)

I too have seen/used "fear and loathing" in this way.

In any case what do you gain by going on the offensive with pedantry?

tomc1985··on Fear and Loathing in FreeBSD
I've been spotting BSD embedded in an increasing number of devices -- Playstation 4, Pioneer DJ consoles, hell Mac OS is built on top of it ... my guess is the missing piece is driver (and maybe developer) support

I am so glad this is the top comment. The author of this post sounds like a horrible person to work for.

Also, we need to deliver a swift kick in the nuts to this unlimited growth philosophy. People under you NEED to plateau, that is their comfortable level of productivity. You don't force growth, that is something that comes naturally and at an unpredictable pace.

As someone who got dumped when Crashplan decided to no longer offer service to individual users, regardless of the business realities, this is a universally shitty thing to do to your supporters. Why should anyone do business with you if you might pivot away from them (on such short notice, no less) in the future?
