tomaytotomato··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
Raiders, refugees, bandits, people fleeing from other collapsed societies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Peoples

Some of the "Sea Peoples" didn't even travel by sea.

It's slightly funny and scary in our current year of 2026 we now have a lot of destabilizing factors along with uncontrolled immigration happening.... history might repeat?

Unfortunately huggingface.co is blocked by my company's firewall and VPN so it breaks when downloading a model.

Are there any huggingface mirrors out there?

tomaytotomato··on AI Safety Is Mostly a Sex Cult
Whoops, fixed now
tomaytotomato··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Honestly,

We need a good purge of this nonsense in the tech scene....

If anyone wants to setup a counter culture tech scene, reach out to me. I am an average Java engineer (I like for loops more than foreach)

tomaytotomato··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
More of this madness coming out of the west coast of America, in particular California.

The Manson family, Heaven's Gate, NXIVM, Rationalists, Zizians... what next?

All turn out to be rotten to the core with their need to reshape and craft their own paradigm, which then gets warped by egos, individualism and power.

Hate to think what other madness is brewing.

tomaytotomato··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I am doing lots of different projects now

- Making a nostalgic remake of Rainbow Six Rogue Spear - called "Tango Down"

Its low poly, Java OpenGL game but trying to stay faithful to the old gameplay

- Updating my homelab setup to be much tidier, moving stuff to Ansible, dockerising non-critical services. Running scheduled backups to a separate NAS

- Making a World in Conflict SFX mod for Warno, so it sounds much better

tomaytotomato··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
Can't wait for in 10 years time to find one of these workstations on eBay selling for £100-150

Then I will do a video of me playing Crysis on it

tomaytotomato··on Fable 5.1 World Modeling
I am making a spiritual successor the Rainbow Six Rogue Spear

Opus has been great at building the game engine but it does struggle with world building for me.

Any tips welcomed!

I would drop Facebook in a heartbeat but Facebook Marketplace is a strong pull for getting bargains in my local area.

I have alternatives like eBay and Gumtree but they have their own shortcomings.

Examples from Facebook:

- Antique lumber planks 50p a plank

- 4 sticks of DDR4 16GB SODIMMs, £60

- Garden tools, £10

This stuff would be slower and more expensive on eBay, and Gumtree is more of a waiting game as its userbase has definitely shrunk.

tomaytotomato··on More German than many Germans
A nice read,

Immigration has many pulls and with that comes all sorts of immigrants whether great, average and terrible.

Unfortunately Western countries and bureaucracies seem to have committed the usual sin of developing processes that:

- make it incredibly hard for good immigrants to migrate, contribute and naturalise themselves legally.

- at the same time leaving lots of gaping holes of exploitation for criminals and other immigrants who are just looking for a meal ticket or to enter illegally and abuse our high trust societies.

Couple this with a news and media setup that optimises for covering news of bad migrants whilst hardly broadcasting news about good migrants.

tomaytotomato··on Firefox Containers Preview
Same

Have you figured out a way to open a specific Firefox instance using some sort of routing.

e.g.

I click on a link in my work Slack desktop app, it then routes the link to be open on my Work Firefox instance.

Meanwhile if I click on a YouTube link, it opens on my personal Firefox instance.

tomaytotomato··on Annoying and alarming things about OpenCode
My bet:

In a years time the discussions on using CC, Opencode, Pidev etc. will be redundant as we will be building our own tooling with whatever programming language and tooling you want.

Some will repurpose a popular opensource tool or harness, others will build it from scratch in an hour or so.

tomaytotomato··on Anthropic's Method to Losing Goodwill in a Few Easy Steps
No idea,

Anyone from Anthropic here who could answer this?

tomaytotomato··on Anthropic's Method to Losing Goodwill in a Few Easy Steps
I have been using Claude code for a while and have recently migrated to Pi

Migrating my skills/agents and config was fairly straightforward.

Pi's agent harness seems to be more responsive and quicker than CC (perhaps with the prompt caching and squashing it does behind the scenes)

Tempted to do a write-up on migration.

I am only using Pi with Github Copilot as I am scared I will get my Claude account banned if I use the Oauth with Pi.

> If you are averse to the Daily Mail, you can try this article instead..

The irony of this though is that you just become bucketed in another consumer group.

Resist the packaging of yourself by media firms and marketing.

Try and consume news through the sources like AFP or Reuters (unfortunately not free anymore)

tomaytotomato··on Ask HN: Who is quitting? (July 2026)
There's always been absurdity though, right?

These are some I can think of or have witnessed since starting my dev career in 2010:

- 4GL business languages making developers redundant

- Big data

- Cloud computing

- DevOps

- LLMs

For those about to quit, I salute you.

Keir along with Theresa May and John Major were true bureaucrats but they all had no real charisma.

Sadly charisma is valued more by voters than other qualities of the political leader of a country.

tomaytotomato··on Project Valhalla, Explained: How a Decade of Work Arrives in JDK 28
A lot of the comments on here are a bit unfair on what is great work being done and even more awesome work (JEPs) in the pipeline for the future.

If Java was a child, imagine it being brought up by loving parents for the first few years (Sun) then it was thrown in a garage with some other children and neglected by its evil guardian (Oracle)

Neglected and unloved till JDK 8, its basically been playing catch up.

So when people say "oh so its now got structs or value types of X", yes it has but that's because it has been stunted in its development due to big bureaucratic and hostile corporate processes, but its free now and is getting love through the OpenJDK family.

I will continue to enjoy writing once and deploying anywhere!

Thanks for making me feel older now

tomaytotomato··on 4× RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell on Water, and the One Card That Wouldn't Behave
What a time to be alive, I remember 10 years ago as a poor student waiting to buy a ATI Radeon X1600 Pro with 256mb, yes 256mb of RAM.

It cost about £190 in 2006.

Now we have GPUs that are in tens of thousands of pounds with insane performance, but what would their price be without the AI and Datacentre squeeze?

tomaytotomato··on Kimi K2.7-Code: open-source coding model with better token efficiency
Check out TNG on huggingface

They are a consultancy in Germany, but I watched a presentation on them tuning and removing bias from Deepseek models. It was quite interesting.

(I upvoted your question as I agree)

Its not just code we need to worry about, its also subliminal messaging and other things.

How useful is spatial data over time, does it decay or age much?

Is the geographical data more useful, or are buildings and other structures more important?

Genuinely don't know much in this space.

tomaytotomato··on Ask HN: Should the term "cognitive surrender" apply to writers who publish slop?
Agreed, I have been trying to get back into blogging on my site.

I found LLMs good for spitting out a structure for my posts but if I ask it to write for me I end up just fixing or correcting it and then lose motivation and never finish the posts.

After a bit of soul searching I have come to the conclusion and reassertion that I want my blog to be about random stuff I like or do, not just a content piece of things I can say that I am a "thought leader" or "I live, eat and breath tech" during an interview.

Maybe in years to come people will just be better evolved to detect AI or slop and by then writers will have ways to show legit writing and captivate readers.
