tolger··on Ask HN: Best way to learn modern C++?
I found "C++ Primer" by Lippman et al very well written and comprehensive. It includes C++11 features and every chapter has exercises to make sure you understand the content.

tolger··on Microsoft and the UWP for Enterprise Delusion
I am considering Qt as well. Modern C++ is a very nice language. I actually prefer it over Java, and I do a lot of Java at work.
tolger··on Losing Faith in the State, Some Mexican Towns Quietly Break Away
Agreed. Most Americans are unaware how destabilizing US policies have been to Latin America in general. From toppling democratically elected leaders, to supporting corrupt murderous regimes during the cold war.
tolger··on “The least-worst idea we had”–The creation of the Age of Empires empire
Epic series. Age of Empires II and III were my favorite, and most played RTS games. I spent hundreds of hours battling friends and strangers online. The games had a lot of depth, looked amazing, and no two matches were ever the same.
tolger··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
Spanish native speaker here. The influence from Arabic is mostly in vocabulary, about 10% of our words have Arabic roots. However, Arabic had negligible influence in structure and grammar. Spanish is your standard Latin derived language.
tolger··on The HP-35 Design: A Case Study in Innovation (2011) [pdf]
Very interesting article. My dad, an engineer, had the successor to this model, the HP-45. It was an amazing machine for it's time. Because of it, I fell in love with RPN and refused to use anything else. When I went to college I got an HP-48sx. I think it was the zenith of scientific calculators with so much functionality crammed into it.
tolger··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
I think the bigger risk is internal strife. When half or your citizens hate the other half, that's a recipe for disaster.
tolger··on Stop Using Excel, Finance Chiefs Tell Staffs
There are things that Excel is good for and some that it's not. This article seems like it's blaming the tool instead of the people who are using it incorrectly.

Also I laughed when one of the complaints was "Older versions of Excel don't allow multiple users to collaborate on the same document". Well, is that Excel's fault, or should they just go and get the latest version?

tolger··on Is software development really a dead-end job after age 35-40?
As someone approaching 50 myself, I've seen my career growth options limited as an individual contributor. I love coding and have never been interested in management, and I think this has limited my salary increases. As an experienced Java back-end developer there is no shortage of employment options, I get contacted by recruiters all the time, but the salary range I am being offered seems to have reached a plateau.

I would prefer to stay in the technical track, but I probably need to specialize in a hot field, i.e. machine learning, in order to become more sought after and less of a commodity.

tolger··on The best laptop ever made
I completely agree with you. As a long time Mac user I remember how Macs would delight you with the details. The thoughtfulness that went into making your life easier, to facilitate getting your work done.

With this latest generation of MacBooks, it seems that you have to constantly struggle to adapt to them, not the other way. You need to bring dongles to connect peripherals, the charger no longer has MagSafe and the LED that used to tell you when it was charging and when it was fully charged, etc.

tolger··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Having Reader View available out of the box is huge for me. This is one of the reasons I prefer Safari when I'm on MacOS. But I use Ubuntu most of the time, so I'm switching back to Firefox as my default browser. So far, it's been great.
tolger··on The best laptop ever made
I think the lack of standard ports, mag-safe, hdmi and sd card slots are big regressions in functionality.

Not to mention that the touchbar is not very useful, and as an emacs user, a big pain to not have a physical <esc> key.

tolger··on Microsoft Has Stopped Manufacturing The Kinect
Mine (Xbox One) failed after a year as well. I didn't use the motion sensor as much as the always on Mic. I loved walking into the room and saying "Xbox On" and my Xbox would turn on. "Xbox Pause" and "Xbox resume" when watching a movie and later when Cortana was integrated it became even more useful. But once it failed, I never thought it was important enough for me to replace it.
tolger··on What’s New in Bash/WSL and Windows Console
I'm with nailer on this. All I need is a decent built-in console with tabs and good support for bash, powershell and cmd.
tolger··on Thoughts on the Late 2016 MacBook Pro
I play StarCraft and never use shortcuts. I lose all the time.
tolger··on Misophonia: Scientists crack why eating sounds can make people angry
The Duskfall, Mors Principium Est or Kataklysm are my faves. Melodic but not too melodic like Dark Tranquility.
tolger··on NeXT: Steve Jobs’ Dot.com IPO That Never Happened
IRIX was actually System V (with BSD extensions) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRIX.

But I agree, it was very nice and I remember it fondly.

tolger··on Misophonia: Scientists crack why eating sounds can make people angry
This is very interesting. I think I have a mild version of this. Since I was a young (6 or 7) kid I remember how it pissed me off when someone would make noises while I was watching TV. It used to be enough for me to storm out of the room.

Nowadays, I have more control, but it still bothers me when my office mate munches on chips or an apple at work. I usually put on my noise cancelling headphones and listen to death metal, and that takes care of the problem.

tolger··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
1060 GPUs are power hungry, and MacBook Pros have generally not included this class of graphics hardware. It would be more likely, if they were to move to Nvidia, to use the 1050 instead.
tolger··on 2016 Retina MacBook Pro Caveats
It depends on the laptop. I've seen Dell XPS-13 and XPS-15 on sale at BB. Both of which are excellent.
tolger··on 2016 Retina MacBook Pro Caveats
Excellent, concise review. Thank you. There are so many compromises with this machine, I am going to skip this generation.
tolger··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
Did the machine come with Ubuntu out of the box, or did you install it yourself? That is one of the reasons my company went with System76. They ship with Ubuntu installed and will provide support, drivers for all the hardware, etc. The OryxPro is a nice desktop replacement.
tolger··on Microsoft is now a braver, more innovative company than Apple
As a heavy bash user I have to agree. Even the new Linux subsystem for Windows terminals use the horrible command prompt. I wish they would port Ubuntu's terminal app with tabs and much better usability.
tolger··on Ask HN: What's your primary development laptop?
System 76 Oryx Pro (Clevo P650RE3) / Core i7 6700HQ / GeForce 970M 3GB/ 16GB RAM / 500 GB SSD / 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display / Ubuntu 15.10

A very nice desktop replacement for me. So far I am loving this laptop. It is very fast and great as a development machine. I usually have MySQL, Tomcat, Eclipse IDE, Emacs, several Bash terminals and Chrome with many tabs open. Everything feels fast and fluid.

Weighs around 5.5 lbs and the power brick probably an extra lb. Not bad for a workstation class 15" machine.

The matte screen is good, but not amazing. The 1920x1080 resolution is perfectly adequate for a 15" screen. There is a higher end option with an IPS panel and G-Sync, but I didn't purchase that.

If I have one complaint, it is the battery life. I get 2 or 2.5 hours max on this laptop with light to medium use. I don't know if it is poor power management under Linux, but I think on Windows it uses Optimus switching for the dedicated graphics card. Since I use it mainly as a desktop replacement, this is not a deal breaker for me.

Speakers are loud and clear.

I have Steam installed and can run AAA games like "Shadow of Mordor" at Ultra settings with high frame rates. It is great for getting some game time when I travel.

If you are looking for a powerful Linux workstation which can also handle gaming this is a very nice choice.
