togaen··on Why I Two-Space (2012)
Yes, this is common practice in many orgs for that reason, as well as that it makes resolving merge conflicts easier.
togaen··on Poll: Is there a negative stigma toward articles written in Medium?
Make your own web site. It’s hard to take “developer” articles seriously if they’re published on a platform intended for non-developers.
togaen··on [dead]
Hear hear
togaen··on Possibly a new way of drawing boxes in the terminal
For those who want to use a GUI, but don’t want to say they use a GUI.
togaen··on Norvig's Law (2002)
Cute
togaen··on Voice Typing Changes Everything – So much more than Dictation [video]
meh
togaen··on Node_modules: One character saved 50 GB of disk space
The JavaScript development ecosystem is completely insane. Why do people do this to themselves.
togaen··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
Mcmaster is what the web is supposed to be like.
togaen··on C++20, How Hard Could It Be
These slides are profoundly uninteresting.
togaen··on Jqp – A TUI playground for exploring jq
I don’t know what any of those words mean.
togaen··on Multitasking, something we copied from computers
Clickbait.
togaen··on The spam on Twitter
Maybe twitter likes the spam. It gets people like Paul Graham to complain about it on twitter thereby generating more user engagement and ad revenue. Keep up the good work, Paul.
togaen··on Ask HN: Software to make you blink more automatically to reduce dry eye?
External factors that trigger blinking are generally irritants and perceived dangers. You might find something to trigger blinking, but it would probably be one of those things, which would make your computer insanely user un-friendly.
togaen··on JavaScript hydration is a workaround, not a solution
Burn it all down. Just stop using JavaScript.
togaen··on Ask HN: How can I come to peace with the years I wasted on pointless things?
You probably won’t ever fully come to peace with it. All you can do is make use of the time you have.

If you’re worried about wasting time on pointless things, keep in mind that worrying about stuff you can’t change may be the most pointless thing you can possibly do.

togaen··on Why do people use Hacker News, why not Reddit?
Because the Reddit UI is an unusable mess. At least HN interface makes sense.

Also, HN is crazy fast to load and doesn’t need JavaScript.

togaen··on One kitchen, hundreds of internet restaurants
who cares… if you’re so worried about where your food comes from, don’t order it from the internet. go get it in person.
togaen··on Ask HN: Does Google employ better software engineers than Apple?
Do you drive your car at top speed every time you use it? Of course not. One would assume that, for both devices, the interface is as fast as it is designed to be for the task at hand, not necessarily as fast as the hardware can run it.
togaen··on Show HN: I made an easier version control system
Why is this better than existing solutions? The feature list on the site is not convincing. (“View previous versions of your code with ease”… that is table stakes for version control, not a differentiator.)

Most version control systems are both free and, frankly, not that hard to use. This would need some pretty killer features to be compelling.

togaen··on The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment of All Time
More like: the most terrifying clickbait headline of all time.

But then, it’s Slate, so what do you expect.

togaen··on Bye-Bye, Bluetooth (2004)
lul
togaen··on Ask HN: How do you justify your existence?
There is no justification for existence. It just is.
togaen··on Progressive JPEGs Are a Thing
“One interesting feature about the format, which not known to many, is the possiblity to make the loading of images progressive.”

It never ceases to bring me joy when young people ‘discover’ something that used to be common knowledge.

togaen··on SATSCARD: Like cash in hand, pass physical Bitcoin along multiple times
…or just use cash.
togaen··on Uber turns cash flow positive for the first time in bumper quarter
But still not even remotely profitable after 13 years. Incredible.
togaen··on The Two Types of Quality
So it’s just “form” and “function,” which are types of quality the English-speaking world has also been concerned with for quite some time.
togaen··on Idea: Aerial (above ground) street lanes for flying vehicles
Urban sprawl is caused by bad city planning, not the inability to fly your car. If you add flying cars without fixing the planning, the city will just spread out even more, and you’ll end up with the same commute times. Exactly the same thing happened when automobiles became widespread.
togaen··on Ask HN: Why not add salt to lakes and swimming pools to reduce drownings?
To make a meaningful difference you’d have to add so much salt that swimming just wouldn’t be fun anymore. Never mind the utter infeasibility of it all in the first place:

Add salt to lakes, kill every living thing in and around the lake, deal with an enormous amount of rotting bio matter, and probably poison drinking water for an entire ecosystem.

Add it to pools, deal with salt deposits everywhere that ruin all the pool equipment, and make the water so saline that you can’t dump it anywhere.

togaen··on The RMT strike will fail even if they win their demands
lol
togaen··on Why should I relearn algorithms?
There isn’t any other motivation. It’s like asking if you should learn to how make pastry dough from scratch. Sure, if you want to, but unless you’re a baker, there’s no real need. You just go buy pastries someone else already made.
