tocs3··on A Metallurgist's Doubts About Self-Replicating Probes
An interesting related discussion:

Will We Ever Find Alien Civilizations? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48860916

I listened to the podcast version (and was awake for much of it). There was talk of self-replication probes and if there is intelligent life out there where are the probes swarming all over the place.

In addition to the probes out to colonize the galaxy, many of these problems are likely (it seams) to spell trouble for any space economy. It would be interesting to solve some of the problems (and see real world [solar system] use) of the technologies / techniques.

Interesting take on things but I think some of them are being young and not the smartphone or lack of.

tocs3··on Why Weather Forecasts Have Seemed So Inaccurate Lately
Is there somewhere I can see the accuracy of forecasts? I have for years been wanting to be able to see how accurate my local (and not so local) forecasts are. Sometimes I think about compiling the data myself but it always seems to be an overwhelming task.. Also, I am not really sure how even to look at it. Has anything like this been done?
tocs3··on U.S. health spending on pace to hit $6T
Aren't they about the only game in town?
tocs3··on U.S. health spending on pace to hit $6T
do you have thoughts on what that looks like?

There is so much to be done and it is not going to be solved by any one thing. That in mind, something like an independent third party patient advocates / advisors would be great. It is hard to be an informed patient these days, Navigating insurance and paperwork is tough and getting second opinions is sometimes had.

tocs3··on New Study Shows That Tall Hoods Cause Deaths per Year
It is not in the article and I have no data to quote but I would think this would be a good "think of the children" moment.
tocs3··on 1250-HP Chevy Corvette ZR1X Is Now the Quickest Car We've Ever Tested
Well, at least majority gas-powered, as 1064 of its 1250 total horsepower comes from the V-8, with the balance coming from the front electric motor that enables it to leap off the line quicker than the gas-only ZR1.

It still needed a little electric help.

tocs3··on US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes after takeoff, Edwards Air Force Base says
It is just easy to not trust official predictions but of course "past performance is not indicative of future results". So we will see.

tocs3··on UFC to pay White House fighters in crypto issued by Trump company

tocs3··on A 'cold blob' in the Atlantic could be a sign of AMOC shutdown
People prefer carrots to sticks.

I sometimes think those in the environmental movement have made a mistake with their messaging. It is too often "we need to suffer to save the planet". It could also be things like:

"Why do you want to pay more to drive a giant expensive gas guzzling vehicle to work so that you can pay for a giant expensive gas guzzling vehicle to go to work in".

"Why do you want to pay for extra electricity when conservation and efficiency will help save money for other things"

"Single use items are thing you pay for time and time again. Durable maintainable items you pay for once."

"Throwing things in the garbage is like paying to store things forever (landfills are not free)"
It is true that there are, at times, good reason to do things that are not at the extreme of conservationism and environmentalism. If the messaging was a little more carrot than stick we might see more progress.

We recently got an elevator for my mother, so pulleys.
tocs3··on What old technology do you still use regularly?
I have been using a straight razor for about 30 years. It is nice to not have to buy anything for it (but a little bit of a pain to sharpen).

The wheel. Fire.
tocs3··on Run your laptop from your couch – couchpilot
I run my laptop from my couch all the time and I do not even need to install anything on my phone:)

That out of the way, it looks like a nice project except I am running linux on my laptop. Is there something like this for Xfce?

tocs3··on NOAA Satellite Captures Rare Imagery of "Interstate-Induced" Clouds
I spend time every day looking at GOES images and animations. This is something I have not seen before but I am going to start watching closer. I never really appreciated just how interesting and dynamic the atmosphere was until I started looking loser. To just watch the clouds go by is nice but I really enjoy seeing the recurring patterns and trying to find a reason (mostly landscape but a few man made things as well).

tocs3··on Ask HN: Are multifocal lenses important for older people who don't drive?
As a slightly older person (mid 50s) who just started wearing glasses I will say that multi focal lenses have not been very important driving. I am mostly looking outside the car and can read the dash fine (with my prescription). I actually have more trouble using a laptop and referring to something written or closer than the laptop screen.

My eye doctor asked, during my last visit, if I wanted a prescription for reading glasses and then asked if I wanted them to read close up (book, phone, etc) or for a laptop.

So, to make a guess at an answer to your question: Maybe different people have different needs.

tocs3··on What do you get with Meta and Instagram's new $3.99 subscription plan?
A bill.
tocs3··on Can these dumbphone evangelists convince you to dump smartphones?
Yes, I would like to see a phone that is almost nothing but a phone and the ability to lock unused feature from easy access. My mother cannot use a smart phone (the all screen and no buttons is too much). The dumb phone she has is almost too much. She keeps pushing the wrong buttons and ending up with an unusable web browser, camera mode, or some other state that keeps her from making the phone call she would like to make.
