Any idea how to get this working on Arch? The latest version looks to be about 2 weeks old.

toby··on Magic Leap raises $827M in Series C
Wrong? Nothing. It just tends to attract the attention of regulators when done at scale. Even Nevada doesn't allow casinos to run proposition bets on anything but sports.
toby··on Magic Leap raises $827M in Series C
That would probably get shut down pretty quickly, as it would be essentially allowing a group of small-time players to make non-sports-related proposition bets.

toby··on The Dark Reality of Sports Betting and Daily Fantasy Games
Some people just gamble because it's fun. Odds in blackjack are about 1% in favor of the house, which means you're (probabilisticly) paying 10c/hand at a $10 table. If you enjoy it, like meeting people, and take advantage of the complimentary drinks it's pretty inexpensive entertainment.
toby··on In Bel-Air, someone is using 1,300 gallons of water per hour
Tiered water pricing is likely unconstitutional in California.

toby··on In Bel-Air, someone is using 1,300 gallons of water per hour
I may be wrong but I think due to Prop 218, it's illegal for municipalities in California to charge more than the "actual cost". For one thing, this means that tiered water pricing will always get challenged.
toby··on I Have Read Prop F
I understand that. It's actually addressed starting on page 26 of the report -- basic conclusion is that a landowner / developer will more likely hold the land until after the moratorium (when it will be even more valuable due to the moratorium) than develop below-market units at a lower price.

I've worked hard to understand both sides of the issue. In practice what I strongly believe will happen is that ~800 market rate units will be delayed for 18 months, nothing else will change and the politicians who pushed this won't be taken to task because they're all terming out and eyeing Sacramento.

toby··on I Have Read Prop F
Just want to point out that some of us have read the full text of the Proposition, know exactly what it does, and the rationale, and still think it will be completely ineffective.

For example, SF's Chief Economist: http://sfcontroller.org/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid...

toby··on I Have Read Prop F
> That is why we elect people. To answer these kinds of hard questions.

Yes, and the people we elected actually already answered this question wrt short-term rentals. Propositions like this one undermine this process.

How many people do you think voting for Prop F will have read it?

toby··on I Have Read Prop F
> The author is a "long-time SF resident" and pretending that an SF judge would want to jail somebody over renting out on Airbnb illegally?

It seems like giving judges that power because "they obviously won't use it" has gotten us into a lot of trouble in the past.

toby··on Eve Version 0
This is totally true, of course... I just think that exploring examples that would be really hard with Excel would make the point better.
toby··on Eve Version 0
Agree -- if Facebook had an "export my friend list to Excel" button, then plenty of non-programmers could perform this task using existing tools.

I read the tutorial and I am sort of struggling to see what benefit this would give someone who was already an Excel power-user.

toby··on A Plan to Turn Engineers into Managers
I'm also not sure how you'd bootstrap something like this for programmers. The reason it works for actors is that every actor who is even slightly famous is a member, so every production has to work with the union or only get completely random people (you're still allowed to make an indie film with your friends if none of them are members).
toby··on A Plan to Turn Engineers into Managers
I'm sure I'll get this wrong, but the way it was explained to me is that you need to appear in 3 SAG productions in order to apply for membership. Since it's a big hassle for the movie production to get an exemption to hire non-union, you need to be special in some way (the director really wants you in particular, you have some special skill like dance, etc.). It helps to know other actors who will call you and say "hey, they need a ballerina to be in the background tomorrow" or whatever.
toby··on A Plan to Turn Engineers into Managers
FYI, SAG does set minimum compensation, working conditions, meal requirements, etc. It doesn't set upper bounds or demand that more senior people get the better jobs.

It's also somewhat difficult to get into. Any aspiring actor can't just go and join.

toby··on First Round 10 Year Project
Wouldn't a greater bias to fund them lead to worse outcomes for those categories?
toby··on We need to rethink employee compensation
There's probably an even simpler model than that. Consider the pay cut you'd take to work at the startup... how much equity did the seed-round investors get for that much money? Multiply that by 1.5-2x (just a guess, perhaps someone has a better idea) to account for their liquidation preferences.

If that's less than your equity stake, then take the corporate job and use the extra cash to invest in startups.

Interactive Brokers has a very robust API, and market data fees are $10/month or free if you spend more than $30 on commissions.

toby··on First 26 pages of Neal Stephenson's new novel Seveneves
Yep, that too, although in that case I didn't even think the premise was that interesting. With the three I mentioned I was totally hooked until the last quarter of the book.
toby··on First 26 pages of Neal Stephenson's new novel Seveneves
That's interesting... my reaction to "Snow Crash", "Diamond Age" and "Cryptonomicon" was that the premise set up was interesting but the ending always descended into a lame Hollywood action sequence. I'm sure I'm not the only one?
toby··on [dead]
It appears this is already happening. Beef production is declining in CA and some farmers are switching from grass-fed to importing feed from other states.
toby··on [dead]
They're both right: http://www.cattlerange.com/cattle-graphs/all-cattle-numbers....

California is #5, containing 5.7% (down a fair bit from a year ago) of all cattle in the US.

toby··on It's not 1999
Do people remember 1999? 24% of people in the developed world and 5% worldwide had internet access. No one had mobile broadband (remember WAP?), and wired broadband was just starting. Virtually none of the public .com companies made a profit.

However, the NASDAQ was basically where it is now. Many people I knew were getting multiple job offers with incentives like a Boxster S or a 4-day workweek thrown in.

We may or may not be in a bubble now, but the excessiveness of that time really felt like a different level to me.

toby··on Arduino TRE
Running a strand of WS2812 LEDs is a pretty common starter project and requires real-time. The BBB does support this through the PRU, but it's a lot more complicated than just using an Arduino with the library.

toby··on Why Spotify Pays So Little
Interesting. I'm sure people are doing this illegally, but technically you're supposed to buy a commercial Spotify license for public performance.
