toasted-subs··on Hewlett Packard Enterprise nears $13B deal to buy Juniper Networks
Even after Juniper had the fiasco with malware built into their switches?

Guessing that won't happen again but kind of shocked.

toasted-subs··on Ubuntu Looking at Discontinuing Its Source ISOs
Definitely not pointing fingers (I'd take the stance of Linus in giving nVidia the middle finger).

Just from the point of a consumer trying to get work done on my machine and deliver things in a reasonable time frame.

I expect to be able to flash a USB, plug it into my computer and have things work. The default settings for installing Ubuntu do not let you use 4tb drives without custom partitions, not ideal.

And RPM Fusion straight up doesn't work with fedora, have to boot into a cli and spend a few days trying to get the closed source drivers to work with no success.

toasted-subs··on Ubuntu Looking at Discontinuing Its Source ISOs
Unfortunately all Linux distributions seem to have issues for me. I just want to install something and have it work.

Ubuntu doesn't like my 4tb drives and the Nvidia driver support is horrible for fedora. Less people using Linux makes it more and more difficult to find helpful tutorials and guides. Kind of sad.

toasted-subs··on Show HN: I made an app that consolidated 18 apps (doc, sheet, form, site, chat…)
Looks like a great set of starter apps if anybody wants to try and revive HP's WebOS.
toasted-subs··on Things engineers believe about Web development
Ease of deploying is a huge thing which gets lost. Over focusing on a single area of an application makes things really obvious the big picture was lost somewhere.
toasted-subs··on Things engineers believe about Web development
The core of what differentiates applications isn't what happens on the front end. Putting all the focus on the client which gets delivered seems like a misappropriation of funds.

Especially as one man teams it just doesn't make sense. Any on teams with multiple people having relatively static HTML is a really effective abstraction.

Is HTML really that scary for people?
toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
Yea definitely, had so many horrible experiences picking up other people's python projects.

Maybe it's my experiences, but I tend to do a good job avoiding dependencies.

ML is resource intensive, doesn't make sense to use JVM based languages.

toasted-subs··on Sell your micro startup for less than 25k dollars
Patents don't seem to carry as much weight in this industry.

There's a million and one ways of doing things, the way patents work is a specific implementation.

Gaining a patent amounts to throwing stones at each other.

20k is a lot less than hiring a HR department and finding a developer. Haven't looked at the site, but was assuming some of the ideas have an MVP of some sorts.

toasted-subs··on Sell your micro startup for less than 25k dollars
I’ve seen startups which got millions in funding to do basic appointment scheduling. If I had actual funds seeing something like that for $20k might not be a bad idea and totally possible for decent coder to generate in a month.
toasted-subs··on Sell your micro startup for less than 25k dollars
Might not be bad. I’ve thrown some change at a few cool ideas because I appreciated the work.

It’s definitely not false hope, but people should realize the difficulties aren’t related to code.

toasted-subs··on Sell your micro startup for less than 25k dollars
Kk I’ll make a copy of this after my current contract is up. $10 a month take it or leave it.
toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
Try poetry, I like it a lot more than conda.

The basic virtual environments work excellently too.

toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
Mavens definitely nicer than Gradle, but when you have to shade Jars it becomes almost impossible to use.

In python you can specify the version. The popular ML libs in Java are actually still broken and have been for years.

toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
I love how people just downvote comments instead of provide adequate feedback.

Like a chain of tiny dicked mean people who want other people to use broken languages.

toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
Yeah but that's expected given it went from a fancy scripting language to one that supports modern features of other programming languages.

I had a similar problem moving apps from earlier versions of Java a decade ago.

toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
Any problem you have with python could be used describe Amy nodejs application.

Your just trying to get people to use languages which are less useful in practice (other than Java).

toasted-subs··on Cold-blooded software
I have yet to have a python versioning issue, but with java I've had tons.

Worst of all, it's always a clear "use the latest version and it will work". With python using the latest version almost always works, and you can import the previous functions if you really want to use the new interpreter on old code.

Maybe this is because most of the time with python you barely have external libraries. Similar to Java, but in Node.js it's like asking for trouble.

toasted-subs··on OpenAI Pissed Off Developers by Phasing Out Plugins for GPTs
One of the reasons I don't like building on top of external apis.

You are the whim of those people.

You mean gain market share.

At some point the problem is how do these entities play nicely with other entities.

Yup, I've had doctors prescribed medications which caused issues. When I looked into it myself there was publication after publication of people taking the medication and having the exact problems I had.

Scary as fuck, especially when one doctor threatened to lock me up if I wouldn't take them.

Sick and disgusting behavior.

Anti-competitive behavior.

Plain and simple.

toasted-subs··on Fed court rules for retired engineer told by state to not talk about math
Playing devil's advocate, but telling a jury information as if you are an expert when you are not is something to be careful of.

Not saying you need credentials but it's difficult for outside disciplines to know if somebody knows what they are talking about.
