toast_coder··on Email security on Democratic campaigns is as bad as 2016
But if the situation was reversed and Trump was the email server bandit this thread would be 50% hate on Trump posts.

Thats just how it is on HN.

Money.

toast_coder··on What does the GDPR actually mean for startups?
Its a funny reference to bring up California. So many responses to GDPR have been a blanket refusal and cutting EU users off from a nontrivial amount of content on the internet.

As a US citizen, I already know that everything on earth causes cancer to the citizens of CA, but its interesting how many product commercials where you see the products are not available in CA.

Frankley, I think alot of data privacy crusaders are going to be even more surprised by how easy it is for ditigal product offerings to cut out users by geolocation. If CA wants fo go down the road of making websites display notifications about this cancer causing data collection, well, I feel like I could make my living just by selling my digital products in Texas.

At some point the regulation makes the business unprofitable.

toast_coder··on I know why rejection emails suck – I write them
You bet there are absolutly people who want protection from this discrimination. Those people want it broken down to the concept of nothing more than 'I was here first, you must offer the job to me or I have cause to sue'.

It is one of the hallmarks of union labor management. It is one reason why private labor has a competitive advantage.

toast_coder··on Everything Is Booming Except for Wages
If your negociating with walmart or mcdonalds you have nothing to offer in terms of skill. (for the jobs you are referencing)

Those people who have skills worth money like to negociate.

The great thing about that is everone can better themselves and be worth more.

If you dont wont to be in debt, dont take the loan. Saying that you not getting your secondary education paid for by somebody else dooms you to a life of serfdom just sounds like you whining
toast_coder··on I'm Wil Wheaton. I Live with Chronic Depression and Anxiety. I Am Not Ashamed
> I would much rather worry about whether my life truly matters than worry about whether my life will immediately come to an end if I can't kill or grow enough food.

I cant help but think negotiating those situtations is exaclty what the human needs to avoid depression. Maybe you chances of dying young are much higher, like 30% vs 1%. But die young or die old, those humans really lived.

toast_coder··on Internal Facebook Note: Here Is A “Psychological Trick” To Target Teens
This seems fairly benign. What's giving it the coverage and negative feedback here is the fact that somebody call it a 'psychological trick'.

Is an ice cream truck playing music and slowing rolling down your street on a hot summer day also a psychological trick we need to guard against? Accounting for human congregations and 'appealing to their curiosity' is a part of the human existence.

Downloading junk is also a life lesson, they will learn.

toast_coder··on Things they don’t teach you running a business by yourself
I'm desperate to start a business. Over 20 years of working in lead software dev positions and understand the grind that occurs in almost all organizations.

The counter point to your 'horribles', is that the support level you get inside organizations doesn't match the increase expections of a team, and that on larger teams the general level of aptitude approaches average. Occasionally having to work with people who are down right bad at their job. The very effect you espoused of 'company that would...' do all these things for you draws in alot of people who see it the same, and work it like, well, a job (not a calling, or career, or personal investment).

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. A regular wage from a company making money is a good thing, but a strong part of my being believes that I could be successful doing it on my own, and do it to the point of it being art.

Different people at different times in their lives might be more or less suited to one path or another. While i sympathize with the stress you might feel running a business i think there is alot of stress in working for an employer. The people not feeling stress inside companies are people who are coasting. When you're coasting, the part of your being that manifests itself as your work ethic, and professional skill dies a little every day.

toast_coder··on Almost 70% of Millennials Regret Buying Their Homes
Entirely true.

I bought i super unique house, 100 years old out in the country. While talking to the appraiser asking him if the house was worth what i had offered, he said somthing like 'well if thats what your offering thats what it's worth'.

In hindsight, the market would tell me the house definately was not worth it.

Really i think the appraiser is there to prevent simple fraud.

toast_coder··on A Drop of 4 Degrees Made a Big Difference for a Garment Maker's Bottom Line
I agree with your statement, my business model IS incompatible with the spirit of GDPR. You and I are just looking at GDPR differently. You think its somthing good.

You are wrong about the business profiting from personal data however. That doesn't happen. Again, my assumption is you are a lay person and you do not understand the complexities of data management. You are making assumptions about why data is handled the way way that it is, assuming the reason is greed or incompetence. You're wrong.

I certainaly conceed that it is possible that compotition could come along and be GDPR compliant and 'win' but from my perspective that wont happen. What will happen is the largest organizations will be fined into regularly spending large amounts of money to work on GDPR, hold the regulators off to to some extent and small players will never exist or get destroyed because one small wrong move and one wrong bureaucrat has that power over them.

Time never stops telling a new story, but what time is saying right now is the America is dominating the EU in information technology and that sure looks like it will continue throughout my lifetime.

toast_coder··on A Drop of 4 Degrees Made a Big Difference for a Garment Maker's Bottom Line
GDPR is criminalizing all websites because compliance is impossible. It puts european officials in exactly the possition they want to be in, everyone is breaking the law an enforcement is a matter of who their friends are.

Majors websites are taking steps to remove access from eu. This will only get worse. Be prepared to live in the environmet your politicians have created, or be prepared to come back to planet reality.

I speak personally, as a technical architect for international sales organization. People who basically are not in that position don't realize the way the law is written that compliance is not feasible. You are simply gambling that the shakedown form the enforceres won't be to bad.

toast_coder··on Dogs rush to help when owners cry, study suggests
Do you think you experience emotions differently than other human beings? It seems really presumptuous to say you love somthing more than others ever have. Presumptuous and insulting.

Furthermore, i think alot of people would say sacrifice is the greatest display of love, and I would bet a whole lot more parents have sacrificed a whole lot more for their children then anything you have sacrificed for for dog.
