tnolet··on Managing my motivation as a solo dev
Sounds very familiar. Was a solo dev for at least 2 years before being able to form a team around my product. One nit, one confirm:

- I don't agree with the guiltiness on zero days. There is just no way to stay sane if you don't truly enjoy zero days. You will burn your candle.

- I 1000% agree that any form of customer validation makes your day. Could be a Stripe ping, a mention on Twitter or here. Set up services like https://f5bot.com/. Google alerts is useless.

My totally failed / crickets initial launch here on HN is findable via submissions in my bio, anno 2018. Three upvotes.

tnolet··on Ask HN: How to do simple heartbeat monitoring?
We do synthetics and heartbeat monitoring for quite some companies (link in bio) but this problem is a bit trickier, or let's say "three sided"

1. Yes, a synthetic check is very useful here to just see if a user facing "thing" is still working.

2. a heartbeat check / deadman's switch can also work here, but it will only be reliable when the monitored event has a predefined cadence, e.g. "every 5 minutes this should happen".

3. The lack / absence of metrics flowing into a system is also sign. This would typically be solved by the Signoz team where they would alert on not seeing some specific event happening for x time. This can be tricky if the event is directly related to a user interaction.

Super big disclaimer: founder at a monitoring company that solve 1 and 2, not 3.

tnolet··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
Oh boy that hits home. Been deep in the OTEL world the last months and the official docs are very, very undercooked.
tnolet··on Show HN: BandMatch – “Tinder” but for finding musicians to create bands/collab
What’s the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

You only have to punch the beat into a drum machine once.

(Had bands and multiple drummers. Love’m)

tnolet··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
Could be true, I have no idea. All I know is I can buy some pretty damn nice EV's now from reputable companies for less than a Tesla.
tnolet··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
> Models 3/Y are literally one of the cheapest EVs available in EU/US?

Er, no. Peugeot, Renault, Volkswagen etc. all make (way) cheaper models. Heck, even Volvo now has an EV (the EX30) that is ~EUR 8k cheaper than a Model y. Not even mentioning the Asian brand like Hyundai etc.

tnolet··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?

tnolet··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
https://github.com/checkly/headless-recorder

- got ~15k GitHub stars.

- AWS copied it.

- We deprecated it as better stuff came on the market with @playwright/test's codegen.

But I did code the initial version in a weekend. Was called Puppeteer Recorder then.

tnolet··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
Founded companie(s) to in NL and DE. It's not so much that there is a notary step, it's just that the DE notary is slow, expensive etc. In NL it takes 30 minutes at a notary (or online) and typically EUR 125 or so. Done.
tnolet··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
I'm Dutch (Netherlands) and lived in Germany a while. I started companies in both. The Netherlands is ultra-quick and cheap. Germany not so much as per this thread.

The mythical "European state" where everything works the same does not exist.

tnolet··on JetBrains IDE new Terminal Interface
for me it strikes the right balance between enough "white space" and density. E.g. VS code is not dense enough for me.
tnolet··on JetBrains IDE new Terminal Interface
I'm normally cynical bastard resistant to change. But Jetbrains new IDE styling is really good. I use it in WebStorm everyday and see no reason to move back to the old UI. Kudos Jetbrains.
tnolet··on Web Scraping in Python – The Complete Guide
100%. Playwright (which does have Python support) is completely owning this scene. The robustness is amazing.
tnolet··on What it was like working for Gitlab
Interesting that the OP puts “caring about performance” so high where he admits that it had very little impact on business results.

If the data shows it does not matter for success of the company, why care so much and stress it is important?

tnolet··on Weaveworks is shutting down
All good. Just wanted to mention this was with a company I started before my current to which you are referencing.
tnolet··on Weaveworks is shutting down
I was following them on and off as they started around the same time I started a company in similar space and we shared an investor. Similarly, Armory.io also got sold in what seems a fire sale ($7M after raising $200M).

Goes to show how hard this space is.

> There's no money in making a thing that works well, only in making things that look good

Amazon, AWS, Salesforce and anything Oracle entered the chat.

More seriously, I think it really depends. People will use and pay large amounts of cash for stuff that solves there problem and does not have a fancy looking UI.

tnolet··on Post-mortem for last week's incident at Kagi
Oh yes, the amount of times I rolled back a change during an outage that had nothing to do with the outage...

It's a critical skill for engineers: being able to critically reason, debug and "test in isolation" any changes that address outages. Much harder than it seems and typically a "senior" skill to have.

tnolet··on Show HN: Indiebackers – Back indie projects and earn rewards
In the grand scheme of things, this is irrelevant. The problem an indiehacker has is that no one knows they exist and they have no users. Being copied should be very, very low on your risk list.
tnolet··on Slashing data transfer costs in AWS
we just built a new feature for our pretty bandwidth heavy SaaS on R2. Works pretty damn good with indeed massive savings. We just use the AWS-SDK (Node.js) and use the R2 endpoint.
tnolet··on I spent a year building an app and failed – The story of Taskwer
OP found out that customer research and Go-To-Market are more important than engineering. Engineering is (mostly). Finding customers and selling to them is not.
tnolet··on Prismic.io is increasing our price by *1900%* over Christmas
Holy moly. Just got the same email. 6x price hike. Effective less than 30 days from now.

I guess consultants migrating folks from prismic to some other cms will be busy this Christmas.

tnolet··on The Advice SaaS Startup Founders Would Give Their Younger Selves
yes. Silly I did not spot that. The first three rules of a startup are:

1. get customers

2. get customers

3. get customers

But, as per my reply earlier in this topic, the "how" is left as an exercise to the reader.

tnolet··on The Advice SaaS Startup Founders Would Give Their Younger Selves
There is no clear answer to this. But if you are a builder / developer, you probably are doing to little on marketing & distribution. I know I did.
tnolet··on The Advice SaaS Startup Founders Would Give Their Younger Selves
Some truthful but slightly generic tips in here. The big missing thing always is not so much the "what" but the "how".

How do you find good people? How do sell before building? How do you find a good marketer? How do you reach $500k revenue in one year?

There are no easy answers, playbooks etc. here. It all depends on industry, customer profile, market circumstances etc.

Also, without trying to be overly sour, these tips should have a source with them noting the founder's company stage. Tips from folks doing $1M ARR+ tend to be more useful than those from $3000 ARR.
