tmtvl··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
No, it's not. C♯, with a sharp sign, is the sharp note. Exchanging the number sign for the sharp sign is like exchanging the Latin capital letter R for the Cyrillic capital letter Ya (Я).
tmtvl··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
Java. Fortran. C#, which in pronounced 'see sharp' despite being written with a number sign rather than a sharp. Algol.
tmtvl··on "Someone just sent me an ad that features an AI version of me. What do I do?"
Can't prove a negative. Proving 'it's an image of me' is as easy as holding the image next to your face. Proving 'it's not an image of you, but of a doppelganger' requires proof such a doppelganger exists.

Legal Eagle made a good video talking about how there's a bit more to it than that, it was about the Platner and Salwell allegiations: <https://nebula.tv/videos/legaleagle-she-said-is-evidence>.

tmtvl··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Because people generally don't like having bits of millstone in their flour.
tmtvl··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
I don't get the scoring system: I got 0 points, but I got a streak of 2 in a row. Bizarre.

And for 'herb' it depends on which dialect of English you speak.

tmtvl··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
They were for a long time the only big distro which made it easy to install non-free drivers.
tmtvl··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
For me the draw is that Waterfox has partnerships in order to provide funding so if/when Mozilla truly loses the thread (which some may argue they have) WF can keep going on its own, whereas the Librewolf devs have stated that if push comes to shove they can't maintain an entire browser themselves.

> Insurance companies legally partner with a different legal Nexus front corpo, which will ingest stolen data and make it "sythetic data" again, wink-wink; then provide it to the insurance corpos.

And, of course, sell it to the Epstein class behind closed doors for undisclosed kickbacks and favouritism.

tmtvl··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
Match in 'percentage reduced since 1995'. Fortunately we're gonna get a bit of a chance to catch up considering the USA's current leadership.
tmtvl··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
No chance of that and I don't know where GP found that table but it most likely doesn't account for _any_ externalities.
tmtvl··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
Nah, zswap is way better than zram: <https://chrisdown.name/2026/03/24/zswap-vs-zram-when-to-use-...>.
tmtvl··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
Interestingly you're looking at the wrong column: emissions per million USD GDP have gone from 467 metric tons to 206 metric tons. That's an improvement of about 56%. It'd be great if the politicians here in the EU could pull their heads out of their arses long enough to try and match that.
tmtvl··on Project Blinkenlights
Not to be confused with <https://justine.lol/blinkenlights/>, of course.
tmtvl··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Year, day, month in that order written all together? I have seen both day-month-year (12-09-2026) and year-month-day (2026-09-12), but _that_'s a new one.
tmtvl··on I'm a Proud Luddite. That's Why I Use Linux
FOSS is an interesting beast in that it's comprised of both Open Source (the Linux kernel) and Free Software (the GNU project). Linus is more pragmatic than Stallman so depending on where you personally fall in the idealistic vs pragmatic scale you may lean more towards either one of their philosophies.
tmtvl··on Why Emacs Consult async searches feel slow and how to speed them up
Oh, you use Lazarus? Cool, it's an amazing project. Too bad it's a bit of an unsung hero, it deserves it's day in the limelight.

tmtvl··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Thing is, SBF, Tate, and Paul aren't old (well, depends on your frame of reference I suppose); so even discriminating on age wouldn't help you much.
tmtvl··on Live map of public transport in Belgium
When you hover over a dot you can see whether it's the real position or whether the position is computed from the timetable with delay applied. The transparent yellow dots are computed, the opaque yellow dots are real position. Same for transparent vs opaque gray and orange dots; the blue dots all appear to be computed (makes sense, the NMBS doesn't provide real-time info about where trains are as far as I know).
tmtvl··on The Highest Point in the Netherlands
NotJustBikes made a video about the highest point 'in the Netherlands', that's where I heard of it.

tmtvl··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Yep, both can coexist perfectly well, in fact rail + flight + water + cycling should be good enough to account for the vast majority of mobility requirements.
tmtvl··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Commercial passenger planes can generally only lift off and on at dedicated facilities, though.
tmtvl··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
Emacs has primitive concurrency (see Chapter 40, Threads in the Elisp manual), and because it's a Lisp, having nice concurrency is just a matter of programming.
tmtvl··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
Yeah, the way I set read-process-output-max (by reading /proc/sys/fs/pipe-max-size) is probably GNU/Linux-only. The two main ways to reduce startup times are:

1. Don't load too much at startup, use use-package's :defer keyword where ever it makes sense.

2. Set gc-cons-threshold to a very large value during initialisation and turn it back down again once everything's loaded. That said, most-positive-fixnum is probably overkill and I should look for a way to reliably set it to half of my PC's RAM.

A less important third way to reduce startup times would be to byte compile everything (possibly even the early-init.el, init.el, and custom.el files, although that does mean you need to recompile whenever you change anything), but that doesn't gain you much.

Okay, including comments it's about 1,200 lines <https://codeberg.org/tmtvl/open-dotfiles/src/branch/main/ema...>. My user-lisp directory contains Daredevil SKK, Groovy mode, and ICL; those are all available on Microsoft GitHub.
