tmhrtly··on Dead millionaire convinced dozens of women to have as many babies as possible (2015)
My hunch would be that early on in the process of innovation, you're quite a distance from profiting from that research. Unless you have pockets deep enough to go all the way, there's potentially value in encouraging many people to try and get slightly further on solving challenging problems in the open, so that all can learn.
tmhrtly··on Longest known exposure photograph ever captured using a beer can
From the instruction manual [1] for the Solarcan (a premade product that operates on the same principle), it appears pretty much all you do is scan the image and then invert it. Take a look at the images in the PDF - they're pretty cool.

The way this technique works is not a standard film photographic exposure, the paper responds very differently in this process to normal processes. In effect what you have is the Sun burning a line onto the paper. This actually means that you don’t need to develop or fix the paper afterwards either. However, the final print does not last very long - the paper is still light sensitive when you take it out of the can so you need to scan it rapidly, in a dark room.

Here's a quote from the Solarcan (a premade product that uses the same principle) instructions:

> Inside the Solarcan is a single sheet of light sensitive photographic paper. Once exposed to light a chemical reaction happens to the emulsion and it begins to change colour. Traditionally photographic paper captures a latent image that is not visible to the naked eye and requires chemical processing, however with a Solarcan the light from the Sun is so powerful that as it passes across the paper it darkens visibly and no chemicals will be required to ‘develop’ the image.

tmhrtly··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
It's worth separating the two types of 'high risk': There's 'high risk of having a severe response to COVID' and 'high risk of getting COVID'. The former (e.g. elderly) are not always the same as the latter (healthcare workers) - but there are some overlaps (e.g. care homes).

My hunch is most of the queues for vaccines will be type A e.g. the elderly. Not necessarily more likely to have COVID, but more likely to be at risk of severe symptoms if they were to get it.

tmhrtly··on A chain cuts through a capsized cargo ship filled with cars
Does anyone know who pays for this process? I would imagine the owner of the ship, but I imagine there's a non-zero likelihood that something like this could bankrupt them. In that case... is there mandatory insurance or similar?
tmhrtly··on Launch HN: Gather.Town (YC S19) – Spatial video chat for remote teams
We were already maxed out on closeness:

X-

XX

was the arrangement if I recall. I think the spaces thing would work well but sounds like it could remove some of the fluidity of meeting anywhere, bumping into people in the 'hallway', etc.

tmhrtly··on Launch HN: Gather.Town (YC S19) – Spatial video chat for remote teams
I used gather as part of a social gathering with my university cohort and enjoyed it. Only oddity for me was one situation where a group of 3 of us had the person in the 'middle' hearing both, but the two on the outside could only hear or see the middle person. We tried expanding the 'circle range' thingy but then could hear the conversation happening across the room. I wish there was some way to make that whole process slightly more fluid.
tmhrtly··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
However US pricing is normally exclusive of tax whereas the U.K. price is inclusive of 20% VAT. 54*1.2 is around £65 so not that far off the £67 price.
tmhrtly··on Ask HN: Is there a website specialized in mathematics courses?
Has anyone here used it and could comment on its efficacy for people with say, good high school + some college courses knowledge of maths looking to grow? I've seen more than enough adverts for it on youtube but would love to hear thoughts from someone not being paid to hawk it!
tmhrtly··on Ask HN: How do you store your lifelong learnings for your future self?
I did further research, and two concepts that anyone stumbling upon this post might be interested to explore further are the Zettelkasten and the Commonplace Book

tmhrtly··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
I went cold turkey (blocked in my hosts file on my laptop) 4 years ago. Hands down the best single decision I've ever made.
tmhrtly··on Facebook isn’t happy about Apple’s upcoming ad tracking restrictions
I hope it might have the effect that those newer apps instead choose to innovate with their business models and pursue directions that don't require the user to sacrifice their privacy.
tmhrtly··on Facebook isn’t happy about Apple’s upcoming ad tracking restrictions
I think in some situations if users see value in the opt-in then it can be ok. E.g. your phone asking you if you're happy to share your location with an app. I sure as hell want my mapping app to know where I am, but I also feel very comforted that I still get a say in the process. The thing about this tracking opt-in is that no user would ever want it because it's solely there to exploit them. So in this case I think you're 100% right.
tmhrtly··on So you want to roll your own crypto?
I believe that airline pilots also fly in simulators a fair amount, and that this gives them the opportunity to test their skills in a safe environment where failure is not penalised to the same degree.
tmhrtly··on Show HN: Read The Count of Monte Cristo and others in installments in your email
Does this use your browser's timezone or do I need to convert into another timezone when entering the time I'd like the email chapter?
tmhrtly··on I fear App Review is getting too powerful (2015) [pdf]
Forgive me if this is a stupid question but if you’re unable to remove apps from the store how will you handle blatant issues of spam or, worse, viruses?
tmhrtly··on Over 275 days since Equifax’s data breach settlement and no one has been paid
As a Brit, I feel I should point out we definitely do have credit ratings. The three main ratings agencies are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
tmhrtly··on City Roads – Draw all roads in a city at once
If you folks are enjoying this but want more flexibility, check out Mapbox - it lets you define fully custom styles for OpenStreetMap maps and download them as high res images or embed them in apps (basically this but more flexible and a bit harder to use). https://www.mapbox.com/
tmhrtly··on New research suggests that social mobility in America may be more limited
A study doesn't necessarily have to advocate a solution - it can just bring attention to a problem.
