Like you, I repeatedly actuate buttons for a living.

tky··on Former telecom manager admits to doing SIM swaps for $1k
Until carriers are hit with substantial penalties, this will continue. T-Mobile allowed a SIM swap at a retail store on my line, which I noticed in real-time. Corporate couldn’t have cared less, even though I had all the names and location and detail from the store after I investigated myself.

Worst part? They send a text saying, in effect, “we’re chabeing your SIM in 15 minutes unless you call us”

This is AFTER their supposed security improvements, but then again so are the two other hacks where customer data was leaked.

Don’t use SMS 2FA and set the most obnoxious ringtone for your carrier’s short codes. Take the most defensive approach to being a cell customer because the carriers won’t save you.

tky··on Doom Running on a Toothbrush
Regrettably, electric toothbrushes now often feature displays, Bluetooth, analytics, and the pinnacle of terrible: DRM/forced replacement of brush heads.

LLM soon, surely.

tky··on Kagi Small Web
They do. 100 free searches. https://kagi.com/pricing
tky··on Unexpected responses from ChatGPT: Incident Report
While the postmortem is nice to see at all, it’s the postmortem equivalent to “Bug fixes and performance improvements.”
tky··on Freenginx: Core Nginx developer announces fork
This seems like a much larger story than the fork, given the install base of nginx.

For clarity are you referring to CVE-2024-24989 and -24990 (HTTP/3)?

tky··on Cloud Egress Costs
EDP can be great if you can meet their required year over year growth requirement and if your spend is high enough to make the discounts (which are variable and negotiated often at a product offering level, not blanket) offset the required top-shelf support contract. For smaller orgs even at the $1-2M/mo level, it can often be a risk not worth taking vs other cost savings mechanisms and locating high-egress use cases elsewhere.

Egress bandwidth pricing has been the sacred cow money firehose forever, despite transit costs continuing to shrink.

tky··on Kagi search reached 20k paying members
Their end of year video recap and discussion answers a lot of questions asked here and gives some pretty deep insight into the product and its future. Highly recommend giving it a watch. https://youtu.be/DRVY-74lkBA?si=VsUW_09u53d7a8D2
tky··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
I have to wonder why CF bothered to say it was performance related in the first place, even if it was. The decision to let her go was made long before that call, and no explanation is going to make it go any smoother. All they needed to say was that they were parting ways, get her email address, and offer the hollow sentiments standard for being the messenger of bad news.

It is always good to understand why you’re being let go, and humane companies will sometimes allow managers to communicate certain details so as to help but not get sued. These were not those people and you could tell by the corporate buzzspeak alone.

Thinking about this from the employer side, they set themselves up for an adversarial conversation that had no possible means of redemption.

I hope she finds work soon. While I don’t think posting a clandestinely recorded video to social media is the best idea, I now think more highly of her than I do of her former employer.

tky··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
Fun and all but the data isn’t necessarily accurate, or it’s only checking for MAX-9, as I looked up a MAX-8 that just landed and it said it wasn’t (which is true, it wasn’t MY flight, so gotcha?:))

If this is an actual concern you have, look up the flight on your day of travel to see what equipment you will most likely have and react accordingly.

As a fan of the TV documentary “Air Disasters” I’m more afraid of the software and the people than the hardware, and my confidence in air travel has only risen after watching dozens of episodes.

tky··on Comcast says hackers stole data of close to 36M Xfinity customers
This on the heels of requiring bank account details to preserve auto-pay discounts, just like their security peer over in wireless, T-Mobile.

What could go wrong?

tky··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
It appears that he had a Workspace account which offered “unlimited” storage for a time, predicated on the account type being multiuser businesses or education, with a per-seat fee. Google phased out the unlimited storage awhile ago (over a year) after people discovered a loophole where paying for one account still provided unlimited storage. Predictable abuse followed (see /r/datahoarders).

While I’m sympathetic to the user and skeptical of Google’s commitment to their customers, this doesn’t appear to be a straightforward case of someone getting Scroogled. If he were paying for the consumed storage as a standard Drive customer, this wouldn’t be happening.

tky··on Writing documentation for your house
The concept is spot on but the implementation seems awfully complex.

My strategy that has scaled well over several homes: write install date/vendor/serial on the front of appliance manuals and keep them in a folder. Yes, you can scan them but it’s often easier to look at a paper manual while troubleshooting an appliance.

For notes, punchlists, “how I did it” reminders and details, a shared Apple note or Notion page or Google doc is great. Spouse acceptance factor high and participation factor higher.

tky··on Ask HN: What's the coolest physical thing you've made?
I recently added a new Sonos Beam to my TV and used Sonos One speakers from 2017 to serve as my rears. While Sonos has done some weird stuff with old product retirement in the past, being able to pair 6 year old speakers with current hardware was delightful and restored my faith in Sonos product longevity.
tky··on My total comp for creating GitHub Copilot
$20k bonus seems nice. Most folks acknowledge their salary and bonus opportunity from day one - what was the bonus potential here? Context helps.

I’d ask Alex: for your new startup, how will you quantify bonuses for salaried employees who do outstanding work or create services that are exceptionally valuable to avoid disappointment like your own?

tky··on Red Hat cutting hundreds of jobs, CEO says in letter to employees
Exactly.

As good a time as any to fold RH into the regularly-scheduled “Resource Action” cadence and deflect upset onto general economic factors.

No matter the sense of autonomy given by IBM, acquired companies will inevitably be subject to the mighty “RA” (aka layoff) cycle.

tky··on Show HN: I was frustrated with pricing of PagerDuty et al., so made one myself
They’ve adopted terrible dark patterns with account management and even their service tiers. Prices keep going up; this is an excellent time for competition.
tky··on The Best Pens for 2023: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
As a leftie, I value a quick-dry ink. The Sharpie gels have become a quick favorite.

The s-gel ink cartridge is compatible with the Energel line, so I usually remove them from the plastic Sharpie body and put them in my metal Energel RT which has a much nicer weight and balance.

tky··on De-cloud and de-k8s – bringing our apps back home
They’ve had non-cloud infrastructure for a very long time. Their new orchestration methods notwithstanding, reliability and security are unlikely to suffer.
tky··on Google Finance getting updated in November
"updated" is the new way to say "we're killing functionality" without actually saying it. The update, as best they've described, is the elimination of the 'Portfolios' functionality.

Any recommendations for alternatives?
