tjtrapp··on Third fatal Tesla Autopilot crash renews questions about system
> Many new cars have speed limit sign recognition built in and they will display the current limit on the dashboard

Tesla Model 3 has this feature and, while autopilot is engaged, will decrease the speed of the car when the speed limit decreases.

tjtrapp··on 25 years of coding, and I'm just beginning
This response echoes my sentiment. I've been coding for 20+ years and have found that literally writing the code becomes a smaller and smaller portion of my day-to-day as my career moves forward. The solution design, guidance for less-experienced team members, pull-request reviews, solution design with customers/partners, etc. becomes a larger portion of my daily responsibilities.
tjtrapp··on It took seven miles to pull over a Tesla with a seemingly asleep driver
> When people hear autopilot, they think...

Sounds like a problem with people.

tjtrapp··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
It doesn't matter where you live or where the company is based... afaik, the determining factor is where the company stores data. In other words, if they have servers in the EU, they are bound by GDPR.
tjtrapp··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
> It was Apple specific

Maybe these symptoms are Apple specific but Samsung had fire and explosions:

tjtrapp··on Juniors Literally Can't Write Switch Statements: What Sr. Devs Need to Focus On
iirc the last time i used a switch was to create a static factory method to instantiate objects. the static class had a static method that took an enum as input. the return type was an abstract base class. the method switched off of the enum, new'd up the type - did some common initialization - and returned the new object to the caller. this approach keeps your "creation" logic in one place.
tjtrapp··on Software Developers: how to get a raise without changing jobs
"Well, yes. They did. They did it by making the single worst strategic mistake that any software company can make:

They decided to rewrite the code from scratch."

tjtrapp··on WADA Confirms Attack by Russian Cyber Espionage Group
I disagree. The attacks are becoming more sophisticated and fool the most seasoned techies. Additionally, when I ask "Baby boomers" if they understand phishing, they oftentimes say yes but then have trouble explaining what it is or how it is executed.
tjtrapp··on Walmart Pay
>> The result is an innovation that will make the ease of mobile payments a reality for millions of Americans.

I don't think this is an innovation but more of an evolution of an already existing process.

>> ”The Walmart app was built to make shopping faster and easier,”

I have to get wallet from pocket, open it, take out card and swipe - 4 actions.

OR

I have to take phone from pocket, unlock it by tapping the screen 6 times (dont mess up), opening the app(, maybe navigating to the scanner), then scanning - 4+ actions.

That is neither faster nor, in my opinion, easier.

Where's the benefit for me (as a consumer) with these electronic payment systems?

tjtrapp··on The rich have begun to work longer hours than the poor?
> Figures from the American Time Use Survey, released last year, show that Americans with a bachelor’s degree or above work two hours more each day than those without a high-school diploma.

The title is a bit off.

tjtrapp··on [INFRA-7524] migrate Apache Subversion project over to the git repo
April fools! Take a quick look on the history tab:

>> Tony Stevenson made changes - Today 16: Comment [ Pfft! Happy April's fool!

>> For immediate release: Apache Subversion votes to rename itself Apache Irony, creates a black hole and disappears. ]

tjtrapp··on A 60-Hour Work Week is Not a Badge of Honour
Could he just be bad at his job? Maybe he needs the extra time to compensate for what he does not accomplish during the M-F work week.
tjtrapp··on How LinkedIn screwed up our friendship
u forgot the closing snark tag </snark> ;)

regardless, i agree that my preference can be different than others.

tjtrapp··on Will Google Kill my Blog on December 6th?
lol i was just thinking the same thing. as much as i know these comments do not help the OP, i cant help but think, as i sat there watching w my family, how their perception of googles help desk has been setup to be one of "OMG they're even amazing at help desk".
tjtrapp··on Lookback.io - See how people really use your app
A closer look at the lookback.io site makes me think the user will know they're being recorded.

> Send your app to users using TestFlight and ask them to start recording. You can also ask them to perform certain tasks you've prepared, typically sent via email.

tjtrapp··on Impress.js
> but I think it's a bit 'too much' for a slide-based presentation.

I disagree. I used this for 3 presentations by modding the demo app. After downloading, its as simple as writing HTML and CSS to create a presentation. Add a few section tags, then your custom markup+styles, and you're good to go.

For me, writing the HTML and CSS is easy. Maybe that's why I enjoyed using this for my presentations.

tjtrapp··on Startups: stop using generic form letters when you tell a candidate 'no'
I agree that a one-day interview deserves some feedback.

I disagree that said feedback is provided during a rejection letter.

I suggest to you as a candidate, to ask for feedback when they ask you if you have any questions for them... At that point, they can say you did well in this area, not so hot in another, etc. But its up to you to ask.

tjtrapp··on Apple’s Fingerprint ID May Mean You Can’t ‘Take the Fifth’
when was the last time u saw people walking down the street playing w their fingerprint readers? readers are not as ubiquitous as iphones.
tjtrapp··on Airlines offer no-crying sections
From what I know, the crying is due to the change in pressure that affects babies inner ears during takeoff and landing.
tjtrapp··on Netflix should buy the NFL Sunday Ticket rights, not Google
Postseason typically shows all games on TV. This setup will allow us to watch any game regardless of where you live (and what your cable provider allows you to watch).
tjtrapp··on Netflix should buy the NFL Sunday Ticket rights, not Google
Holy cow! This sounds amazing for me b/c I'm a TWC subscriber and (b/c of my aptarments location) cannot get a DTV receiver installed.
tjtrapp··on Gmail Overhaul Has Marketers Saying 'Ack'
From the gmail bulk senders guidelines, "We also recommend publishing an SPF record and signing with DKIM. We do not authenticate DKIM using less than a 1024-bit key. By authenticating, inline images you send will be shown automatically. Recipients will not need to click the "Display images below" link."

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126?topic=12838

ok, so no opt-in... =)

tjtrapp··on Gmail Overhaul Has Marketers Saying 'Ack'
from what i understand, gmail allows senders to opt-in to a "good known sender program" which then automatically shows images in a users inbox
tjtrapp··on MPAA Demands Source Code of isoHunt’s “Failing” Piracy Filter
I like the idea of downloads.
tjtrapp··on MPAA Demands Source Code of isoHunt’s “Failing” Piracy Filter
It's funny to me that the MPAA has the time and resources for a code review on 3rd party code but still has yet to build an app that allows me to pay for streaming their content.
tjtrapp··on Stephen Fry reveals he attempted suicide in 2012
Pills are easy... Aside from a 30 minute visit to the doc.

Addressing the root cause typically requires working with others over a period of time... and that work is oftentimes what people with depression want to avoid.

tjtrapp··on The trick Max Levchin used to hire the best engineers at PayPal
> We've changed the signature of most of the UI method calls. The build now has 5,000 errors. Please make changes to your code.

I feel a build should actually compile before committing changes. If you make a change that create 5000 build errors, you better get to fixing 'em or revert that change.

tjtrapp··on How A Tech Giant Proposes To Charge You For Having Friends
The tech sounds pretty neat to me [privacy concerns put aside].

Maybe this tech is only enabled if your streaming a new release... something that was just released to the theaters. Maybe 2 people cost 20$ and 4 people cost $30? All I know is that I will pay more to watch new stuff now and from my couch.
