tired_man··on Waterfall Isn’t Dead
Thank goodness.

Because all this agile shit just means that developers become very agile in not providing useable information for their documenter team until the product's been released and we start bitching to their CS.

tired_man··on How Google Could Rig the 2016 Election
But why do anything detectable when they have the cash to buy a candidate in the time-honored traditional manner?
tired_man··on Exploring the Wreck of USS Macon, the Navy's Last Flying Aircraft Carrier
Airships has a load great information on the USS Macon and the USS Akron.

tired_man··on Exploring the Wreck of USS Macon, the Navy's Last Flying Aircraft Carrier
The trapeze rotated to draw the aircraft inside the Macon.

See that C shaped bit on the left? As the arm is retracted, that C wold ride down to the fuselage to stabilize it as it rose up. Once the plane was inside, they'd close the hatches. Easey-peasey to climb out with a ladder hooked to the cockpit rim.

tired_man··on Petition UK government to not ban encryption
Oh, I believe you are mistaken. Governments are quite interested in your financial dealings, even with banks. The more they know, the less you can do without their direct knowledge.
tired_man··on Ask HN: Any way to find why users uninstall my app?
I emailed you
tired_man··on Editing humanity
Ummm... Me?

I had thought to mention it, but didn't want the thread to deviate to a morals discussion ;-)

tired_man··on Editing humanity
I agree, but the super human stuff is anathema to the majority. I think it is only because of the conditioning they've had from reading novels (or from someone else's opinion after they read such a novel) where editing resulted in disaster and war.

It'll take time to defeat the bad publicity from fiction.

tired_man··on Google joins Facebook in support of Zero Rating in India
In my heart of hearts, I want to think that TMO understands that the networked future everyone raves about won't happen because data transfer is too costly to make it practical.

Mobile devices are wonderful, but come on, the price of mobile data is assault with intent. I don't mind paying for my data. But I do object to being abused for wanting to use the network for non-trivial activities, such as twitter, farcebook, etc.

tired_man··on Editing humanity
There is room for evil, but also for some good.

How about they start by testing parents for matching recessives that cause genetic disorders so they can know to have an Amniocentesis to make a decision on the child's viability?

Being able to edit out the bits for hemophilia, Downs Syndrome, Parkinson's, or <the genetic disorder you're familiar with here>?

It isn't all about trying to create some designer super race. Some parents knowing that they both carry dangerous recessive genes decide it isn't worth the risk of creating a child only to watch it suffer. More testing is good and IMHO ought to be strongly advised.

tired_man··on 5-Week-Old Fetus Brain, in a Dish?
I have become rather partial to it, myself. To me it applies the mental image of a small and rather stupid bird to the target.
tired_man··on Lavaboom shutting down in 7 days
Seems I was premature in my praise.

It was so much more adventuresome and heroic before the bankruptcy news broke.

tired_man··on Lavaboom shutting down in 7 days
I applaud Lavaboom for being stand-up people.
tired_man··on Countries where flying is dangerous
I propose that the measurement be in crashes per aircraft type.
tired_man··on Countries where flying is dangerous
Like flying into Kai Tak, but significantly scarier?
tired_man··on Countries where flying is dangerous
You don't even want think about what happens to a helicopter in a sudden torrential downpour. It's not a pleasant experience even if you can walk away from it.
tired_man··on WWII Surplus Boneyards
I happened across an article this morning while doing some unrelated research. There were only a couple jet-powered XB-52 prototypes in 1949.
tired_man··on 5-Week-Old Fetus Brain, in a Dish?
Oh, I wouldn't want to try and coin a name for it if I were in that position as a researcher. No matter what you choose, someone will be mad.

It did grow in a similar manner to a fetus brain, but it is also missing parts, those being the 1% of genes that aren't present.

"Fetus-like brain" works and is less ambiguous.

Warbling.... Man. I really need a break from the pre-1900 novels for awhile. At least until I stop my unthinking use of archaic terms and phrases.

tired_man··on New data uncovers the surprising predictability of Android lock patterns
I don't understand why people ever use a pattern lock beyond using it to kid-proof their phone. It can't stop a serious attempt to unlock the phone.

edit:typo

tired_man··on How Google Could Rig the 2016 Election
But why? Have they bought a candidate, too?
tired_man··on Hamas 'seizes Israeli spy dolphin' off Gaza
I would have paid money to watch a pile of landsmen in a motor boat trying to chase a free-swimming dolphin!
tired_man··on Scottish politician says email in Ashley Madison database was 'hacked'
Of _course_, it was. We believe you. <laughing up sleeve>

Is it my skewed perception, or is lying the first defense of any politician, no matter what the issue?

tired_man··on Ask HN: Any way to find why users uninstall my app?
The free version is ad supported.
tired_man··on Ask HN: Any way to find why users uninstall my app?
Hmmm... I just took a look at the app. It is not bad. Contrariwise, there's nothing extraordinary, either.

Looking at the comments, I saw one complaint about the notification alarm, which is always the phone, not the app, and one asking for a note field.

Seems to me there's a note field now, and the app generates a notification at the set time - I'm on lollipop and it sounded just like my other notifications as I expected.

IMHO, the reason is that like myself, people searching for task specific utility applications install handfuls of them to try them out and see what features they offer.

Take that behavior into account and go forth!

I like your app. I may not keep it since I don't actually need one, though. But it's not hurting anything and it can live there until I need space.

Edit: DotNick: It's 9am and my 10am reminder just soudned off....

tired_man··on 5-Week-Old Fetus Brain, in a Dish?
A lab-grown brain organ grown in a petri dish is not a fetus brain. It's the size of one, but it is not.

Labeling that tissue as a fetus brain can encourage many people (I hesitate to say which groups, though you can guess) to start their warbling even if they're wrong.

Making a point of saying "lab-grown brain organ," or organoid (though it sounds kinda like 50-ish pulp sci-fi), helps keep them docile.

Not splitting hairs or arguing for fun. When posting science articles, accurate descriptions are important.

tired_man··on Jeb Bush Comes Out Against Encryption
That's not a real surprise, though, is it? It's a further confirmation that's he's just another branch of the same tree.

Please don't take that as a fling against republicans, or support for another party. I despise them all, quite equally.

tired_man··on 5-Week-Old Fetus Brain, in a Dish?
MISLEADING TITLE

It was grown from ADULT brain cells and is now about the saize of the brain typically found in a five week fetus (pencil eraser sized).

tired_man··on Lavaboom's warrant canary has expired
Err on the side of caution, friend.
tired_man··on OnHub
That would not be an option I'd consider. I think controlling your locks without the use of an outside entity is the safest way to avoid problems.
tired_man··on Ask HN: Why isn't HN using target=“_blank” for links?
I believe there are a number of addons that will do that for you.
