tired-turtle··on The Fediverse is an opportunity learned societies can't ignore
What you described as a safe space can quickly become, ironically, an intolerant one, albeit not for you, as you self-selected by joining.

I think OP is addressing the paradox of tolerance, hence the call for differing but not hateful opinions. There’s a fine line between the two and cloistering oneself among likeminded people seems to inevitably lead to some form of intolerance.

tired-turtle··on Ozempic could change the economy as we know it
This is, regrettably, unattainable for many in the US (economy).
tired-turtle··on Apple's smart ring technology may not be limited to fingers
I understand the article is clickbaiting about male genitalia, but does Apple submit vague patent applications because the legal SOP is to cover as many usecases as possible? If so, is it primarily to preclude competition or is it to keep the roadmap open?
tired-turtle··on America Is Getting Lonelier and More Indoorsy. That's Not a Coincidence
3/4 of Americans are overweight or obese, which, I suspect, precludes an appetite for the outdoors.
tired-turtle··on The diamond world takes radical steps to stop a pricing plunge
Eh, I’m fervently anti-diamond (they’re silly imo), but I can acknowledge that, to some, they represent (I think?) a lasting commitment and are a cultural tradition.

If the desire is emotional, then there’s no reasoning with it anyway. (And not everything in life need be logical.)

tired-turtle··on Rare 2,100-year-old gold coin bears name of obscure ruler from pre-Roman Britain
This was the opposite of clickbait.

The pertinent part of the discovery is a 2100 year old coin from pre-Roman Britain stamped with some (“obscure”) ruler’s name, meaning the British Isles had coin-based commerce before the Romans arrived. The ruler’s name is incidental and not itself germane to the conversation, hence why it was elided from the title.

tired-turtle··on Detroit wants to be the first big American city to tax land value
This stance is predicated on interest rates. Taking out a mortgage is currently not the clear cut “right choice.” It might be the optimal choice, but consider, for a loan issued today at over 6%, twice as much money over the lifetime of the loan will be go towards interest as will go toward principle.
tired-turtle··on Ask HN: Are there any fulfilling careers in tech anymore?
I like working in internal software for my company. Keeps me close to the customer (other devs). The feedback loop is tight so I quickly learn whether my work helped someone else.

Plus, you get to know so many other ways of being a software developer; it’s refreshing.

tired-turtle··on A new method to reprogram human cells to better mimic embryonic stem cells
Perhaps this is a naive question, but wouldn’t a preventative measure for heart disease (stopping obesity via, say, ozempic) do more for longevity than repairing the heart after dysfunction has taken root?

Not to mention the quality of life improvements from never being sick in the first place.

tired-turtle··on Speakers of different languages remember visual scenes differently
For reference, here’s a Dhivehi-English dictionary. https://twothousandisles.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/dhiv...

(It lists only ethnic wear as a translation for “feyli.”)

tired-turtle··on Finland introduces the world’s first phone-free tourist island
In your moral framework, am I allowed to use my smartphone when I’m out trail running?

Caltopo has helped me not get lost on long loops where turning around isn’t an option.

tired-turtle··on Tax prep firms shared ‘extraordinarily sensitive’ data about taxpayers with Meta
A simpler system can “solve” a problem, but it often disregards complexity instead of handling it.

A federal sales tax is such an example. It simplifies the calculation of tax burden (solves the problem) by implementing a regressive tax code and placing an undue burden on lower income residents.

tired-turtle··on Thunderbird 115
Without context, this also describes Microsoft Outlook on Mac.
tired-turtle··on Google has a secret browser hidden inside the settings
Not disagreeing, but consider the user base of iOS vs Android. iOS users are wealthier/etc., so exploits affecting them seem more likely to be “newsworthy” and, hence, more likely to be pursued (higher upside).

Similarly, consider how a sunken ferry that killed hundreds of migrants went largely unnoticed during the brouhaha surrounding the Titanic sub.

tired-turtle··on The history and future of workplace automation (2015)
Not sure what part of GP was a quip.

The post GP is replying to reads as satire unless you hold a Hobbesian view of the social contract. It could be a line from Silicon Valley.

tired-turtle··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
During COVID, I made friends who are 10/25/40ish years older than me. I firmly believe we will be lifelong friends, i.e. til death do us apart.

Lasting friendships form in mysterious ways. You need only be open to the possibility.

tired-turtle··on Taxonomy of Procrastination
Subduing procrastination, as with many things in life, is a matter of knowing when to feel thru vs when to think thru problems.
tired-turtle··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
Bit of a straw man. It is as easy (and common) to eat (refined) crap as a vegetarian as it is to do so as a meat-eater.

A well-balanced vegetarian diet does not leave your mind addled by malnutrition. Refined sugar is not necessary either. The “bread” in the grocery store (actually cake) is bad for you, yes, but what is the harm in freshly baked boules and loaves? Like many things, moderation paves the path to joy and happiness.

tired-turtle··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
Most Americans consume more than enough protein and engage far too little exercise. Beans and some walks would do them well.
tired-turtle··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
You also get YouTube Music, which is not as great as Spotify, but nonetheless worth something.

In fact, that’s the primary reason everyone I know who has YouTube Premium subscribes: music steaming + ad-free YouTube.

That needs to be factored into your calculation, no?

tired-turtle··on Burnout
Can you elaborate on how you feel you’re borrowing from the next four hours?

Do you think this relates to your meds (if any) or your disorder (or both)?

tired-turtle··on The curious side effects of medical transparency
Let not the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I acknowledge your psychiatric care/experience may have been subpar, but want to point out that many close friends of mine have dramatically bettered their stations in life via psychiatric (and therapeutic) care, and that, pseudoscience or not, it’s worth considering if something ain’t tickin right upstairs.

tired-turtle··on Use of antibiotics in farming ‘endangering human immune system’
Veganism can act as cover for disordered eating; perhaps that is what you have observed.

Related, I know many “vegetarians” who are what I call effective vegans, meaning they eat vegan ~90% of the time, recognizing purity as a pointless pursuit.

tired-turtle··on Making Go telemetry opt-in is a mistake
(to have the audacity to do something unacceptable)
tired-turtle··on Cognitive sophistication does not attenuate the bias blind spot (2012)
A specific reason is not a logical reason; sure, the decision ‘made sense’ to that person at the time, but it’s irrational within the broader schema of life.

(I think that’s what you meant?)
