tinus_hn··on Court: Cloudflare Is Liable for Pirate Site, but Not as a DNS Provider
It used to be like that but these days you can get free internet with no strings attached at fast food restaurants like McDonalds.
tinus_hn··on The Curse of Docker
So instead of the application no longer starting, they get an application that starts fine but quietly allows them to get hacked and become part of a botnet and perpetuate ransomware.
tinus_hn··on New Outlook is good, both for yourself and 766 third parties
On the other hand I can’t wait for PST files to disappear, along with their syncing, backup and migration problems. Would have been nice if they had one version of Outlook in between though that didn’t automatically create these deprecated files (looking at you, autoarchive).

Also good riddance: Word, the shitty html editor/viewer.

tinus_hn··on The Curse of Docker
And you will never be slow in updating the software (or disappear) so it doesn’t matter you’re essentially creating a mini distro you have to keep updating forever! And also the user magically gets notified that there is a new version or it automatically updates the cd the user is running it from.

And the same goes for the other 20 apps the user uses of course, that all need things like an ssl library. They all have responsible maintainers that can be trusted to promptly regression test, build, package and release every update in the libraries the user doesn’t know they are using. You’d think it is impractical but actually it’s very easy. Apparently.

tinus_hn··on Europe's grid is under a cyberattack deluge
You wonder why it’s so essential the power grid is connected to the internet in the first place.
tinus_hn··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
Spoken like a true Internet Explorer believer in 2010. Nothing is forever, no matter how solid its lead appears to be.
tinus_hn··on The Curse of Docker
And then you just make sure all the libraries you use have no vulnerabilities ever, so they don’t need a way to be updated. Smart!
tinus_hn··on Whisky: Wine supercharged with the power of Apple's game porting toolkit
Another argument for dropping Rosetta (2) is that it forces developers to make the transition instead of lingering in dependence of the translation. And if they don’t make the transition, get dropped by the wayside.
tinus_hn··on Critical bug in ownCloud file sharing app exposes admin passwords
If php_info is really as dangerous as this article makes it out to be these ‘vulnerabilities’ would be rather easy to scan for.

I think it’s time for a debate though what information is considered secret and what isn’t, and have php_info not reveal the information that is secret and the applications not store their secrets in a location that is not secret.

tinus_hn··on Binance Lapses Let Hamas, Isis, Al-Qaeda Make Bitcoin Trades
However, gold in bars, which is how you store value in gold, has no use and is expensive to store.

tinus_hn··on The blender.org servers are experiencing a DDoS attack since last weekend
Like singers against phonographs:

https://recordinghistory.org/the-history-of-sound-recording/...

Technology marches on and menial jobs get obsoleted. That’s just the way it is, even if you enjoy being a ropemaker, basket weaver, keypunch operator or, in this case, an illustrator.

tinus_hn··on Binance Lapses Let Hamas, Isis, Al-Qaeda Make Bitcoin Trades
I used the (legitimate) profits of cryptocurrency trading to fund part of a house. But you wouldn’t see that in research such as this.
tinus_hn··on I cancelled my Replit subscription
If you care if they’re around tomorrow, then yes you would.

Otherwise you end up hopping between services that start out free, no strings attached and then turn to crap.

There’s more to the comparison than price.

tinus_hn··on I Hacked the Magic Mouse
Why are you even buying that inferior hardware? Apple can’t do anything right, right?
tinus_hn··on Apple files legal challenge to EU's Digital Markets Act
If only there were hardware where you could install whatever you want. If only that hardware had a very large majority market share in the EU.

Ah. One can dream.

tinus_hn··on Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years
MoCa is just a standard to run the Ethernet network over Coax cables

Nobody runs the Ethernet cables from 50 years ago, we use modern standards to run the Ethernet network over modern cables. Typically the ‘UTP’ cables but not necessarily.

tinus_hn··on No more ads on Elon's X, EU Commission tells staff
To yammer about misinformation on social media in this conflict is even dumber than during COVID.

How about he takes a look at the shortsighted unjournalistic crap spread by the media controlled by the member states? No ifs and buts, just parroting the words of a known terrorist organization, the enemy of the EU, as long as it fits the narrative. That’s what passes for news in the EU.

He would be better off trying to make sure the real news isn’t actually fake news, so people don’t have to turn to social media for their news.

tinus_hn··on Google News is shutting down purchased magazine content, offering refunds
The end result is more like you borrowed it for a deposit which they are now returning. Who cares, if you insist on reading a magazine again you can get it again somewhere else.
tinus_hn··on Disks lie. And the controllers that run them are partners in crime (2012)
They use this to finish writing the sector they were writing so they can guarantee they always completely write the sector or not at all.

As far as I know this mechanism is not used for write caches.

tinus_hn··on Nothing Phone says it will hack into iMessage, bring blue bubbles to Android
So you’d rather use iMessage where you can only communicate with iPhone users.

Or do you want the open, subpar protocol instead?

tinus_hn··on Why do people still use VBA?
So the answer is:

Because it is the only programming language Corporate can’t choose not to install.

The wonders of ‘Enterprise’, it amazes me when people bring it up as if it’s any kind of advantage or excuse.

tinus_hn··on Electric heat to cost 77 percent more than natural gas, federal agency says
Gas costs just what the gas company asks for it, which is equal to what they think you’ll pay for it.

So it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to do this comparison to make some environmental point.

tinus_hn··on Are compostable coffee cups any better for the environment?
If you create a cup from plant material and then after use compost it into plant soil again, using the cup is as bad as a plant growing and dying. Growing plants is not bad for the environment.

Taking oil out of the ground, making it into plastic using energy and chemicals and then after use dumping it into a landfill is bad for the environment.

tinus_hn··on Are compostable coffee cups any better for the environment?
So the goal should be compostable cups that are actually composted. There might be some arguments against the cups if they are not composted, but if you don’t start with the compostable cups you will never reach the goal of compostable cups that are actually composted.
tinus_hn··on You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It
iPhone has a global market share of about 20%, and only a small majority market share in ‘premium smartphones’ in the US.

Nobody is forcing you to use an iPhone, billions do fine with the alternatives.

Apple does not have a dominant market position, an oligopoly or a monopoly and certainly is not illegally abusing any monopoly power.

tinus_hn··on You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It
If only there were phones made by other manufacturers where the experience, which you know in advance, is different from the iPhone experience which you also know in advance! Then this wouldn’t be a monopoly!
tinus_hn··on Warren Buffett Privately Traded Stocks Berkshire Hathaway Was Buying and Selling
I would have expected the piece to have a response or at least a line indicating Buffett chose not to respond. Poor journalism form.
tinus_hn··on The Escapist staff resign following termination of editor-in-chief Nick Calandra
If you put $10000000 in a company and it’s not making money and it’s not growing, you’re losing money because you could be investing that money in something that does make money, if only a bank account with interest.

That’s why people care if it grows.

tinus_hn··on The Escapist staff resign following termination of editor-in-chief Nick Calandra
Nice of them to put their money where their mouth is. We’ll see if it pays off.
