timwaagh··on If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing
I didn't know things had gone quite this far yet.

I have to agree. There should be legislation preventing this, or the pirates will be morally in the clear. Which does not help copyright owners. Yes, the pirate stole your content, but since you were going to revoke access anyhow he was stealing from a scammer which is justice.

timwaagh··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
I do not for a second believe ordinary workers can outright buy Teslas in Sweden or Denmark.
timwaagh··on The Norway Model: How the Scandinavian country became a literary powerhouse
I don't think this analysis is any better and at least the article tries to tell a story.

Sweden, a country next door with not that many people and no oil has someone named Ibrahimovic who is a bit more than a talent. They also produced some of the most hyped novels of the last decade and some of the worst furniture and probably a few other cherry picked examples.

The point is they're just as talented as the Norwegians yet 'no oil'.

timwaagh··on The Norway Model: How the Scandinavian country became a literary powerhouse
We can throw this 'logic of political survival' theory straight into the thrash. Because this is strictly the logic of n=1. Humans trying to see patterns where none exist. Norwegians did very well, because they did. Maybe they're special or lucky or blessed by Odin or whatever. Or because of some other more legitimate reason. But in any case it's not because it's an inevitable result of strong democracy.

Counterexample: us Netherlanders didn't do very well with our once plentiful gas reserves. Which is why the resource curse is called Dutch disease. In spite of having at the time a century of democratic tradition, our prime minister chose to pump the wealth straight into the social system and not build a national wealth fund. Causing a decade of economic decline.

timwaagh··on The Stroad
I don't know whether the design of American cities is efficient. They might be. and I do believe in roads for all users. That's why a bike lane is called a bike lane and not a bike road. Bike paths and 'bike superhighways' exist in my country but they're unimportant.

But having been in the us only once it was very obvious the us has a problem with safety for drivers. There were cars at the side of the highway (Orlando to Tampa) everywhere, presumably from accidents. Of course traffic wasn't moving. I wasn't driving on holiday and I was glad about it.

It's possibly to do with the fact that Americans all need to drive, ensuring lax standards for driver tests. Maybe if you guys would embrace bike lanes you could also embrace real driver certification. Just dump people who can't drive on second tier transportation like bikes, ebikes, escooters and trains and ensure everyone else gets proper training.

timwaagh··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
If you're obsessed with ensuring others can't make money running something like Reddit then sure
timwaagh··on Super Mario RPG is an endearing, perplexing relic
i take issue with calling it a relic. i dont know why every game needs to be the same. like sure, there are modern rpgs and this is not a straight copy of divinity original sin (most modern tbrpg i have played) but its battles are not worse, just different, with less tactical options like positioning and a strong emphasis on timing. the rest of the games structure is pretty similar although i am sure mario rpg is strictly linear whereas DOS has some choice. turn based rpg's dont change very much it seems.

it reminded me a lot of the original pokemon games. which i did also enjoy back in the day.

timwaagh··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
is your time that cheap though?
timwaagh··on Olive oil soars, and thieves go after century-old trees in the Mediterranean
Yes. They have considered it essential for good health since forever so they are reluctant to say 'sure we can make do with other oil'. More recently that belief has been spreading because the data seems to prove them right. This is driving prices up.
timwaagh··on The costs of microservices (2020)
I liked this well balanced approach. What I think is necessary is more capability to have hard modularisation within a monolith, so decoupling is not a reason to introduce microservices. Performance should be the main/only reason to do it. It's a shame few languages support this.
timwaagh··on Linear code is more readable
you call your blog separateconcerns.com and then advocate for the opposite. functions have their purpose. one of them is separating concerns as is done here. the code on the right is probably better than 99.9% of code out there.

there is even an academic book (normalized systems theory) which claims that having more concerns in one function, will inevitably cause an explosion of your codebase where you have to write a ton of code for a very small change. i doubt the validity of the proof they provide for this, but its something to keep in mind as i have not seen anyone more serious than I claim that it is wrong.

timwaagh··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
This sort of fanaticism is why there is no progress on this issue. Let's start by banning low hanging fruit like cryptocurrencies, private jets and superyachts. If it's insufficient we might have to do more, like build sufficient high speed rail and force the third world to contain their population boom, because if that isn't contained nothing will work. Only then would it be reasonable to go after ordinary people.
timwaagh··on We always end up with waterfall
RUP really isn't waterfall anymore. It's not as linear. It's it's own thing, a sort of hybrid model. The nineties already knew the issue with expecting to get everything right the first time.

The problem with it is it's too complicated. Your management with the mental capacity of a five year old just wouldn't understand it.

timwaagh··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
Capitalisation of Almost Every Word Makes Me Sound Very Important.
timwaagh··on Val: A New Language Alternative to C++, Rust
Unfortunately it looks like symbol spaghetti. C and friends have one advantage: they look clean.
timwaagh··on Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web
It looks like a good proposal. Botfarms are a pita for a lot of sites. Cheating in games is bad. Asking someone for their id to receive a package or content they paid for is normal in the offline world.
timwaagh··on Why use Pascal?
What I don't really like about Pascal is it's pretty verbose. It was originally for educational purposes so everything is very explicit.
timwaagh··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
Except we're not. Engineers that is. According to the Canadian engineer's association or whatever.
timwaagh··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
That's so different from here. I'm 35 and when we finally got a large size TV last year I never went back to the small screen. Well except when I have to.
timwaagh··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
As fancy as it is to use fancy phrases, the lecturing tone here is not matched by any substance. The argument boils down to an appeal to authority followed by a personal attack.
timwaagh··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
I think they might actually now that you mentioned it. In the same way h&m has a better policy than most locally owned clothing stores. Families typically face immense pressure to only think about the short term. But it wasn't what I was thinking of.

But like I said the food produced by land that is urbanized would have to be imported. But that is not a bad thing. It will be very good for developing nations.

timwaagh··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
Farming does a heck of a lot worse damage than 'a decline in bird populations'. What causes such decline in wild animal populations and causes damage to humans is that farming takes up all the available room driving both animals and humans away. I would rather see the farmer being free to sell their lands to housing developers or build on it instead of the current level of masochism with considerations like autarky and tradition being dominant. Presumably a lot would go for it. Farmer happy, people happy. Probably birds happier too. We will help to ensure Ukraine wins that war and afterwards it can sell us food. Or Africa. Or wherever, really. Europe has better things to do.
timwaagh··on The EU AI act is coming, this time for real probably
Google has now said they will do it but indeed they want to sort out compliance first.
timwaagh··on The EU AI act is coming, this time for real probably
I read 180 countries get access. From what I have seen from the list the ter m'countries and territories' might be more accurate.

I think they're reasonable players. They are either well established or have goodish intents. I don't think they ever did anything worse than package internet explorer with Windows.

timwaagh··on The EU AI act is coming, this time for real probably
I don't why bard isn't coming to the EU. Is it this or something else. Google hasn't explained it. I would hope that any ai act will allow reasonable players like Openai, Microsoft and Google to continue their good work without ruining into too much red tape. Considering what is happening, if it's because of the ai act, the act might be too strict as the EU risks getting disadvantaged by not having access to the same tools as 180 other countries. AI will ultimately prove too useful to ban.
timwaagh··on What happened after I left my software engineering career (2022)
Burnout is such a luxury disease. I mean if you don't have a ridiculous American tech salary you won't get burned out. Rather you will try to find other things to make some more money, because you need the money. Is that my yealousy talking? Perhaps but that doesn't mean it isn't true.
timwaagh··on Go with PHP
For me the best platform is one that's easy to debug and the debugging story for php is one of the worst. Otherwise it would still be quite hard to read. But at least it's cheap to host.
timwaagh··on Ed Sheeran demonstrates how copyright is destroying musicians
As much as he dislikes fighting these cases he is entirely dependent on the money he makes from selling songs and the the way the fact that these have value/are copyrighted allows companies to market him and make him more famous.
timwaagh··on Rapamycin: The unlucky history of an anti-aging drug
I don't know man my parents just spent the first few years of their early retirement caring for my grandma who is now in the final phase. It's not like you just won't be there one day. It also costs others a lot of time and effort, money et cetera.
