tims33··on Apple’s browser engine ban is holding back web app innovation
I completely get the sentiment of the article, but if the point is diversifying browsers on iOS the battery life issues seem significant.
tims33··on DOJ Seeks To Block Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy Deal
It is a really fair question. I think there are two lenses. Tobacco does kill people in large numbers although it seems to largely cause issues at the end of their lives. Tobacco also reduces life expectancy, but not as much as opiod users. What I saw said a heavy smoker loses ~13 years and a heroin user ~18 years. Not sure about lighter smokers.

The issue with oxycontin is it helped create a massive generation of addicts who have all sorts of other things associated with them like: rehab, homelessness, and crime. So I'm not sure of the total impact, but likely much higher per person.

tims33··on DOJ Seeks To Block Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy Deal
I hope the DoJ is successful. Taxpayers and families are bearing an incredible cost and toll from the damage they've done.

It is also important that the government reflect on its on role in letting this get as bad as it did.

tims33··on Apple Makes Magic Keyboard with Touch ID Available for Purchase
That keyboard with the ability to pair with multiple computers seamlessly would be the MX Keys killer for me.
tims33··on IBM Z/OS v2.5, Next-Gen Operating System Designed for Hybrid Cloud and AI
There is a chance that selling those divisions might yield better return in a sale. I think you're right on GTS.
tims33··on IBM Z/OS v2.5, Next-Gen Operating System Designed for Hybrid Cloud and AI
Old tech companies that exit their engineering roots to become marketing and sales companies are a sad sight.
tims33··on Farmers always worked from home
I'm not sure of the point of this comparison. My grandparents had a dairy farm that they lived on their entire lives. It is a 6-7 day/week job and the days are long. If you want to take a day off you have to pay someone to come do the work.

It also has nothing to do with WFH. My grandpa might start the day in the barn, drive a tractor to a field a few miles away to cut hay for a few hours, come back for lunch, fix a fence, feed some calves, run the silo, then milk the cows for a second time. It's not like he was ever sitting on his ass staring at a screen. There is a hard fulfillment that comes with that life. And it's definitely not WFH.

tims33··on IBM Z/OS v2.5, Next-Gen Operating System Designed for Hybrid Cloud and AI
I don't understand why IBM doesn't just pare all of their assets back to mainframe and just own who they are. They are or already have ruined Red Hat and have a worst in class professional services business. They're good at the mainframe and should just keep updating it and following it up w/their weird marketing.
tims33··on Jim Whitehurst to step down as IBM President
It won't be long until IBM starts the write-downs of the goodwill from the RH acquisition.
tims33··on Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) to be retired on June 15, 2022
It is nice to see the long internet nightmare known as Internet Explorer come to a conclusion.

What is the next thing we should wish to see die on the internet?

tims33··on Boosting upload speed and improving Windows' TCP stack
I appreciate seeing a support and engineering org going this deep to resolve this kind of issue. Normally this is the stuff you waste hours on with a support org only to get told to clear your cookies and cache one more time.

In particular, the collaboration with Microsoft was great.I wonder what it took to make that happen.

tims33··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
That is a fair point. I just have visions of becoming cumbersome and limiting.
tims33··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
Our expectations on the size and integrated nature of these devices seem to be the thing that caused everything to get glued together.
tims33··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
Repairability seems like a good goal for sustainability. The challenge on electronics is determining what is a reasonable and useful life for a product. Should an iPhone SE or a knockoff Android last and be repairable for a decade? My worry is the regulation will get this wrong. Moderate rules are probably the best way to start.
tims33··on The United States needs to learn how to learn
Both of my first two sentences were dedicated to the fact that America should learn from other countries. There is lots to learn, but our geography is also quite unique relative to Europe and Japan.
tims33··on The United States needs to learn how to learn
"Amtrak can and should fully replace its senior management with people who know how to run a modern intercity railroads, who are not Americans"

The entirety of the article is a set of comparisons to European countries with 2 references to Japan thrown in.

tims33··on The United States needs to learn how to learn
There is no doubt that America needs to get much better at rail and other mass transit and that there is a lot to be learned from the rest of the world. The challenge is that America is not Europe in many ways, but particularly in geography. And yet there is a certain condescension that America has to do it like Europe. That is a message that will never be well received delivered in that way.
tims33··on DDT dump site off L.A. coast much bigger than scientists expected
This is incredibly depressing. It sounds like the chemicals may have been impacting some sea life, but who knows how many humans have been impacted in that area of LA. I can't even imagine how much the clean up will cost.
tims33··on Lambda School agrees to end deceptive educational financing practices
I'm sure the previous terms made the loans much more attractive to lenders which is helpful to Lambda. It would be most useful to understand who created the terms in the first place.
tims33··on Lambda School agrees to end deceptive educational financing practices
That is a blustery title for what seems like a pretty simple regulatory review. Good job by the state for enforcing laws and Lambda for adapting to new rules. Obviously this CA state agency felt like they needed to pat themselves on the back for doing their job.
tims33··on Cisco says computer chip shortage to last six months
“The problems have been worsened by a string of other factors, including a fire at a semiconductor factory and weather issues.”

It is sometimes humbling to remember that despite our technical advances we’re still subject to the forces of nature.

tims33··on The NCAA Erased My Career
Definitely a good starting point. Most of us give them money by watching their sports on tv, so that will be the toughest thing to stop. In some way that makes many people complicit in way they don't realize.
tims33··on The NCAA Erased My Career
Another disappointing story about the NCAA. I don’t know how to fix it, but since the NCAA represents the schools maybe there should be a parallel body to represent the athletes.
tims33··on Oklahoma woman charged with felony for not returning VHS tape 21 years ago
Interesting. That seems like a flaw in background checks. I could imagine it being useful if someone was charged a few months ago and awaiting trial, but in this case it certainly seems unfair.
tims33··on Oklahoma woman charged with felony for not returning VHS tape 21 years ago
The thing I don’t understand is why she was never formally charged. How do they go 20 years and never let her know in any way she’s charged with a felony. I could understand if it was a parking ticket, but not a felony.
tims33··on The USPS is running a 'covert' program to monitor Americans' social media posts
I'm aware of the pension rules and to your point I'm sure the cost is minimal. It just seems so long as they are being managed by the government in this way, they should get some "free" services elsewhere.
tims33··on Bugs allowed hackers to dox John Deere tractor owners
So many of these old school industrial companies that are getting into IOT will have these issues. Who is building the Stripe for old school industrials going into IOT? I’m sure someone is building that Comoros.
tims33··on The USPS is running a 'covert' program to monitor Americans' social media posts
This is a truly bizarre story. I agree with others that other government agencies should run this particularly given USPS already well known financial challenges.
tims33··on Battle of document info extraction services: GCP vs. AWS vs. Azure
There is so much potential to these technologies, but even autogenerated documents have so many embedded semantics that it is hard to train these tools for a wide variety of document formats.
