tims33··on Zendesk to be acquired
They are a direct competitor for Service Cloud. Salesforce usually acquirers to expand their product lines rather than snuffing out a competitor.
tims33··on Prime Video Redesign
It is needed. The current interface feels like it was designed for the Kindle.
tims33··on Iceland’s forest and bush cover has increased sixfold since 1990
The most interesting fact was that Iceland was 40% forested when settlers arrived. I'm not sure their goal is to return to 40%, but certainly a long way to go at 2.6% 20 years from now.
tims33··on Ask HN: Why are the FAANG tech support forums often useless?
Because the FAANG tech companies often have programs that reward top contributors. My guess is the people who judge the contributors have a preference for those who take the company line the most often which just turns those forums into an echo chamber of not completely satisfying responses.
tims33··on How the Durbin Amendment sparked the modern fintech industry
Great article. There wasn’t much legislators did to combat the too big to fail banks, but the Durbin amendment was certainly an effective boost for small banks to compete for Fintechs. It’s why Chase’s Jamie Dimon is now so vocal about changing these rules.
tims33··on In defence of garlic in a jar
I think what the author meant to say is to ignore your critics. No one ruined the author's love of cooking other than the author taking their statements to heart.
tims33··on Ask HN: Do cloud vendors slow traffic to other cloud vendors?
I previously worked for a SaaS provider who had the fastest API for both ingress and egress in our space. The egress often made migrating off far faster than when we migrated competitors in, but we never got in the way of egress speeds.
tims33··on The French repairability index – one year after its implementation [pdf]
No, I definitely wasn't saying that. My point is that people are generally pretty oblivious of the vast majority of facts and features of their electronics devices.
tims33··on The French repairability index – one year after its implementation [pdf]
I see what they are saying. I'm still not sure it is a useful data point other than to say the index isn't detrimental.

My conclusion from the report is that it is still too early to determine the impact of the program.

tims33··on The French repairability index – one year after its implementation [pdf]
I find this statement hard to believe: "76% of those people that in 2021 purchased a new device and indicated to have noticed the index." It just doesn't jive with the real world understanding most people have of their technology devices.

I think this law is a net positive, but I can't tell from this document if it really made a measurable impact in year 1.

tims33··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
The worst part is that they regularly add new notification topics that you also have to go back and disable.
tims33··on Ask HN: How do you monitor your young kids' computer usage?
I use Eero Secure on my home network with handful of custom policies (i.e. oldest kid can use discord, youngest cannot) plus Apple's Screen Time for their devices when they're off the home network. It generally works, but also the internet is a deep cesspool and they still find some bad stuff. YouTube is the worst. There is no porn, but loads of other weird and questionable content.

Now that my oldest is 13, I've started to realize that you can only control a portion of this, so sometimes education is better. My setup above works fine for helping my younger two avoid content they might accidentally find. However, every middle school kid can help you kid find a variety of VPN solutions to evade all of this. The latest for my 13 year old was aChrome plug-in that routes that tabs traffic alone over VPN. I unblocked Discord for him in exchange for dumping the VPNs and having a deep conversation over what is appropriate and how to behave on the internet.

tims33··on IBM’s human-centered approach is a big tech blueprint AI startups should follow
"...and why IBM’s poised to become the defacto technological leader in the global artificial intelligence community under Dobrin’s so-far expert leadership."

This cannot possibly be a serious article. Name one technology IBM has been the leader in since 1995?

tims33··on [dead]
I love that the first comment to this post is this from the author:

"I was expecting more comments about this."

Clearly a post designed to be provocative more than anything else. It's just not that interesting or novel. The idea that certain ideas can't be expressed and by expressing them you're making yourself free is fine, but not that interesting if your only goal is to be noticed.

tims33··on The US has a long way to go before adopting a universal charger policy
I understand that governments prefer a standard and may want to avoid proliferation and vendor lock-in, but I'm still not convinced this is something that needs to be legislated. When the next version of USB comes out will we then have to legislate that too?
tims33··on Brex drops tens of thousands of small businesses as SV adjusts to new reality
Easier to just read the Twitter thread:

tims33··on IBM ordered to hand over ex-CEO emails plotting cuts in older workers
Agree that there is a way to have a healthy company with motivated, engaged staff without targeting employees based on their age. IBM has been broken for so long. They'd be best off spinning RH back out and just selling everything until they're just a mainframe company.
tims33··on Official IE11 end-of-life in 2 days
Great news! What is the next big piece of software that needs to be retired to make the Internet a better place?
tims33··on We’re winding down Google Talk
The problem with chat is that every big tech company is only interested in "winning" vs driving usage. Google would be better off fighting for open standards to improve their position in this market. Open standards in the 70s, 80s, and 90s did such great things for technology.
tims33··on Do you have an income-sharing agreement?/Reporter who would like your insights
Please do your best to make this piece balanced. First, there are definitely a ton of success stories so make sure you have more than a few of this. Second, you should also get some good and bad stories from traditional student loan holders.
tims33··on Mars Rover Perseverance Has a Rock in its front left wheel
Solid nerd humor throughout.
tims33··on Ford surprises F-150 Lightning owners with adapter for charging stranded Teslas
It is great to see a 120 year old company have so much energy. At the same time, Tesla is still the best when it comes to range.
tims33··on San Francisco votes overwhelmingly to recall progressive DA Chesa Boudin
Reforming the criminal justice system is a good idea, but a DA still needs to be competent at their day job.
tims33··on Legends Solar – Buy operating solar panels on commercial solar farms
Really like the idea that you're making a bet on the commercial return of these panels. Obviously, it doesn't have the advantage of something like Net Energy Meeting, but that is only available in a few places anyway.

To me, the most important thing would be assured that this investment truly creates new panel installations vs just being an arbitrage play on reselling existing solar capacity. Is there anything about this program that ensures the solar panels create net new capacity?

tims33··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
To be fair, the Mac bluetooth stack is a dumpster fire. Not sure that works as an excuse given that everyone else's headphones seem to work on Mac.
tims33··on CA Appeals Court Rules San Francisco Cannot Ban Tenderloin Drug Dealers
They're just going to have to put these repeat dealers in jail for longer.
tims33··on Ask HN: What is it called when brands deliberately misspell names
domain-name-ization
tims33··on Norway convinced Japan to love salmon sushi (2015)
I completely agree. But even in the high end sushi places that only have quality sushi, it is still a second class citizen.
tims33··on Norway convinced Japan to love salmon sushi (2015)
My experience in Japan is that salmon is still second class sushi even if it is more common now.
tims33··on Apple App Store appears to be widely removing outdated apps
Mixed feelings based on the article. On one hand, I feel like my parents and kids often start using crappy, out-of-date apps that cause issues on their device. On the other hand, just using a simple heuristic like last updated date seems like a poor choice. Clean the App Store, but be smarter about it.

(btw - my Mac auto-capitalized "app store" - classic Apple)
