timpera··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Same thing for me! Got it with the education discount when it came out in 2024 and, although I've been pretty disappointed with macOS, it's crazy to see that the price increased by $300 in less than 2 years, with no sign of the price increases slowing down.

What will happen once people are priced out of buying computers? I find this worrying.

timpera··on ElevenLabs, TwelveLabs, ThirteenLabs
It's so nice to see an old-school HN hug once in a while.
timpera··on Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM
Sure. The Insider blog tends to be pretty up-to-date: https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/

They seem to be focused on performance improvements because of the MacBook Neo pressure and RAM crisis, but right now, I'm mostly excited for the right-click menu and taskbar improvements. You can already do this with third-party software, but it's not the best experience unfortunately.

timpera··on Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM
I might be in the minority here, but some of the latest Windows updates that dropped in the Insider channel are really cool, and I'm excited to see those coming to main.
timpera··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I've been noticing the same thing since 5.4- it starts with "Yes" yet I haven't asked a question. I think it might be related to the reasoning, like it's answering its own questions?
timpera··on France's Top Court Strikes Down Ban on Social Media for Children
> The council said the ban, which lawmakers passed in July, was too wide-ranging — it could apply to platforms that did not necessarily pose risks to children’s health and safety — and that it did not take into account the age, maturity or family situation of children. The council also found that the ban would infringe on privacy, because it would require everyone to prove their age on social media platforms.

timpera··on Pixel Watch 5
My Pixel Watch 4 lasts me two days (with AOD turned on), and I charge it while I'm in the shower, so sleep tracking is convenient that way.
timpera··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
Alas, Pangram should not be trusted.
timpera··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
It's common for manufacturers to loan devices for review, without having any input in the content of the review. It is disclosed here in the video, which seems fine imo.
timpera··on Mea Culpa – Dark Hours
Understandable, it's a great app, though a bit expensive.
timpera··on Retraction: The App Store Rejection of the Week That Was a Correct Rejection
Why? His other app is extremely good, and his mea culpa seems fine.
timpera··on Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users
It used to be 10 messages every 5 hours using GPT-5, then unlimited 4o-mini. More recently, it went down to ~5 messages per day on 5.5 Instant, then unlimited on 5.5 mini.
timpera··on Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users
Any improvement to the ChatGPT free plan is really nice. It's easy to forget that most people have never used a SOTA model, and only think of their experience with GPT-4o or Google Search's AI Overviews when asked about AI.
timpera··on Improving GPT‑5.6 Sol in ChatGPT, expanding GPT‑5.6 Luna access for free users
I think it's nice to be able to make the model reason for dozens of minutes when you want to go deep on a topic, even if the router thinks it's an easy question.
timpera··on I'll be stepping back from leading product for X
I find that the translations are way better than they used to, because Grok translates slang and insults more truthfully than Google Translate, and those two things are -- for better or worse -- a large part of the conversations on Twitter.
timpera··on DeepSeek planning to significantly raise prices
> We plan to raise the overall pricing for DeepSeek API services in the near future, with a significant increase expected. Please plan your usage accordingly. The specific pricing plan will be subject to official notice.

It would be nice to have this notice on the public documentation as well.

timpera··on The AI Demand Bubble
It is somewhat ironic considering that he writes at length about pop-ups and the degradation of user interfaces: https://www.wheresyoured.at/what-were-fighting-for/
timpera··on The AI Demand Bubble
A lot of smart people said that Uber could never become profitable because the core economics couldn't work out:

Cory Doctorow, who is close to Ed Zitron and writes a lot in the same way about AI's economics, was of the same opinion: https://doctorow.medium.com/no-ubers-still-not-profitable-2b...

I used to believe this, so I'm not sure what to think of the AI market.

timpera··on Italy Blocks Reproductive Health Websites Women on Web and Women Help Women
> In 2019, it was reported that 67% of Italian gynecologists were registered as conscientious objectors and multiple hospitals reported having a 100% conscientious objection rate.
timpera··on Cloudflare's new AI traffic options for customers
It really depends on the difficulty level chosen by the website. I'm testing on both a Xiaomi Redmi 5 and my university library's computer.
timpera··on Cloudflare's new AI traffic options for customers
The solution is building simpler and more efficient websites. You won't win the arms race, so make it irrelevant. Any random VPS hosting a static website can already serve millions of requests an hour.
timpera··on Our position on open-weights models
Anthropic has been surprisingly bad at comms for the last few months, which I find crazy in such a competitive market.
timpera··on French firefighters face 'pyrocumulonimbus' for first time
From Le Monde:

> Some efforts have begun to diversify the Landes forest and to maintain or promote deciduous trees, particularly along the edges of plots. The major difficulty, according to foresters, is that very few species are able to grow in this region, where the sandy soil is very poor and very acidic (it is one of the poorest soils in Europe). Foresters describe the maritime pine as a "miracle species" in this regard.

> While other species can still grow, it is much more slowly and with greater difficulty. Radically transforming this vast forest, currently 80% dominated by maritime pines, therefore seems complicated, and there is also a significant economic stake involved in timber production in the region.

timpera··on I wouldn't say Pangram is broken, but I would say that it's brittle
I recently tried Pangram, created an account, wrote a few lines about how my day went, and it was flagged as likely AI-assisted. It clearly doesn't work.

It's especially bad that they keep insisting that it works very well, because thousands of people will probably end up falsely accused of AI usage as a result.

timpera··on ASK HN: Why has technology become so unreliable?
Poorly-built tech is obviously an issue, but unfortunately I think you might just be unlucky.
timpera··on Cloudflare's new AI traffic options for customers
Please don't use Anubis, it makes visiting websites very difficult (often multiple minutes wait times) on old hardware and low-end smartphones.
timpera··on Cloudflare's new AI traffic options for customers
Blocking bots should not be the default behavior, it should be opt-in. Is Cloudflare trying to play both sides in order to secure a fee on every pay-to-crawl in the future?
timpera··on Future euro banknote design proposals
Bills are imo way easier to manage and carry, especially when you don't have a wallet, which is why I prefer the US system, but I agree that durability is the main issue.
timpera··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I'm in Paris and can confirm that most ATMs don't give €5 bills, but some do, and it's pretty nice to withdraw a stack of fresh, brand new €5 bills that are way more convenient than coins.
timpera··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I try to pay everything in cash as much as I can, so it's nice to see the banknotes get some love from the ECB (even though the absence of €1 and €2 banknotes still hurts…).

I think it's a bit strange to feature people on these, plus it would be difficult to agree on who to feature between the 21 € states. The birds look cool! But it would have been nice to modernize the current architecture-based design rather than feature random EU office buildings.
