timothya··on Show HN: How I know what my neighbors uploaded on YouTube
Looks like this site is just a wrapper around the YouTube search API, which allows you to specify a location to retrieve results from.

From the documentation[0], "The location parameter, in conjunction with the locationRadius parameter, defines a circular geographic area and also restricts a search to videos that specify, in their metadata, a geographic location that falls within that area. The parameter value is a string that specifies latitude/longitude coordinates."

Looks like you can add a location to your video in the Advanced Settings panel in the video settings: http://i.imgur.com/AtnTu7F.png

As far as I can tell, location is not added by default (I tried uploading a video that has embedded location data and that location was not added to YouTube; I would have to add the location manually).

timothya··on Show HN: Bulls and Cows, an SMS version
Neat! I played one game, and solved it in seven guesses. Is that a good or bad score? It would be nice to have it tell you if you're doing better or worse than the average player.
timothya··on Javascript, locking and sound
This sounds like a good use case for a Shared Worker[0].

A shared worker is a web worker which can be shared by multiple pages / windows / tabs, and can easily be used for coordination of this type. The shared worker can listen for the asynchronous event and then send a message to an appropriate tab to play the sound as necessary. Unfortunately, Shared Workers aren't supported everywhere yet[1] (only on Chrome, Firefox, and Opera), but hopefully support will come to the other browsers soon.

Regarding playing sounds on iOS, the Web Audio API is a good way to go here. While it's true that you need a user gesture to trigger sound, you only need it for the first sound you play. So you can add a button to your web app which when clicked plays a short "empty" sound (just silence), and after that point you can play whatever sound you like at whatever time you like; it no longer needs a user gesture for it to be played.

timothya··on AP makes one million minutes of historical footage available on YouTube
You can license the clips by going to the AP Archive website; e.g., this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjZ6NNLCdio can be licensed from here: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/c0016a30f75d456abf... (the link was in the description on YouTube).

I assume they stuck with the Standard YouTube License because that lets them keep ownership of the videos and license them out separately under their own terms.

Does archive.org have the storage space or bandwidth to serve this much video?

I agree that archive.org is the "correct" place for this content, but I think YouTube is a more practical location for now (and also the place where I think the content is more likely to be discovered by regular people: many people think of searching YouTube when looking for video content of all types, and YouTube has a top-tier indexing and search engine to help them find the right stuff).

timothya··on “Streaming has ended for me. I hope this is ok for my fans”
Google Play Music seems to be streaming with MP3 for me, at least in Chrome on Mac (maybe the native apps are different?). I don't use Spotify so I am unable to test it (I updated my post to note OGG anyhow).
timothya··on “Streaming has ended for me. I hope this is ok for my fans”
I just tested Google Play Music, and it's streaming in MP3 for me (Chrome on Mac). Maybe it streams using different formats for different platforms, though?
timothya··on “Streaming has ended for me. I hope this is ok for my fans”
Thanks, I didn't realize that! I've updated my comment to make that point clear.
timothya··on “Streaming has ended for me. I hope this is ok for my fans”
An interesting stance he's taking.

Spotify, Google Play Music, and Rdio all stream at 320kbps MP3 or OGG, and Apple Music streams at 256kbps AAC (which is approximately the same quality as 320kbps MP3). [0][1]

Yet, the vast majority of people cannot tell the difference between 256kbps MP3 and lossless, let alone between 320kbps MP3 and lossless (tested many times, for example: [2]). I'm not sure Neil has much of an argument to make here when it comes to audio quality, particularly for the use case of casual listening.

It's possible to have significant amounts of business logic. Google is able to share 70% of it's code (written in Java) for the Google Inbox apps[0][1].

timothya··on Chromium will no longer download/install the Hotword Shared Module
No, it can only use your microphone on New Tab pages and Google Search pages, and only after the user explicitly opts-in to it (the module is disabled by default).
timothya··on “AppleMusic will pay artist for streaming during customer’s free trial period”
Good for Apple. It's too bad it needed a really high profile artist to come out against it, but I'm glad they could listen and make the right choice.

Taylor Swift has previously not put her music on other streaming services (despite them paying artists during the trial period); I wonder if she'll consider Apple Music for streaming now that they've changed their terms on this point (and if she does, will she also put her music on other streaming services?).

timothya··on Show HN: Karplus-Strong Guitar Synthesizer in JavaScript
> Karplus-Strong guitar synthesizer implemented in JavaScript using asm.js and Web Audio.

Are the asm.js annotations required for this to work in Firefox? I thought the primary use case for asm.js was converting low-level code into something that could run efficiently in JS, and not so much for handwritten JS. And the demo seems to work fine in Chrome, which has no optimizations specific to asm.js that I know of.

timothya··on Google Photos – Can I get out?
No, that screenshot is from the new Photos app (I took it from a review video of the new Google Photos app). And I've tried it myself on my own phone (which is an iPhone, but it looks just like this UI otherwise).

> What I really (really) hate is that they've moved the delete button. It's no longer a button on the toolbar at the bottom (on the Android app), it's in the menu and labelled "Delete local copy".

timothya··on About the supposed factoring of a 4096 bit RSA key
Meanwhile, on the original post, the author is acting like HN was tampering with the ranking of the article because it started doing poorly after people realized that a real key wasn't factored:

timothya··on The Day Google Decided HttpWatch Was ‘Unwanted Software’
