timnetworks··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." Speak like a tiktok echo chamber, you may get stuck believing it yourself.
timnetworks··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
War is big business. The biggest. My family, in Ukraine, would laugh at your basic level of understanding of the situation on the ground. It doesn't look like we're rolling over any time soon though, so there's that.

"When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons." - GM

I'm not a huge fan of the gay parade tbh, but I'm less a fan of countries that enact policies to hang those that would march in it. The world is moving forward, admittedly not everyone is invited. Sad all around.

timnetworks··on AI Agents Are About to Flood the Workforce. No One's Ready for It
imho it's a mistake to let a script take the place of an employee instead of enabling the employees already with the company to leverage said scripts in order to compound their skills and knowledge.
timnetworks··on When did Google get so weird?
Admittedly, 3M developed the world's most popular password manager.
timnetworks··on When did Google get so weird?
So if enough 737's crash into the water Boeing will start making submarines? Product managers deserve a special express queue when in line for the Warm Place.

timnetworks··on iCloud backup – 5GB available, but I can't use it
My options are essentially Kang and Kodos[1] when it comes to smartphones, but I think this has finally pushed me to go get a flip phone and be done with the insanity.

I'll probably still keep one or two around to check mobile viewport on stuff I'm making. MFA/2FA is probably going to be a pain also.

timnetworks··on iCloud backup – 5GB available, but I can't use it
a usb drive is a different backup service, this is what I will do. no need to upload to yet-another-saas.
timnetworks··on iCloud backup – 5GB available, but I can't use it
by date. (doesn't matter if ascending or descending, as long as it's consistent)

$2.99 is like $.02 times 150.

timnetworks··on iPhone Duo
While 4x3 is great (for 1998) and I do run server windows in 1280x1024, all the widescreen media is gonna look terribad.

Are we going back to 'modified to fit your screen' days?

timnetworks··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
I shared a google search query today (q?=cabbage patch kids) and stripped the end of the spaghetti URL. The link preview showed as an advertisement for BigBoxStore (it won't get free placement here).

Platform usability has gone completely out the window (no pun truly) like I wish the product managers responsible for this should do instead.

Perhaps the only real solution is that software developers are treated like realtors, name and face or gtfo.

timnetworks··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
Helping Hands! Articulating clips on a heavy base, sometimes with a magnifying glass, to help you keep two objects or two parts of an object at some specific angle/distance/etc. so that all you need to worry about is the fumes.

Exhaust fan! Put your station next to a window, both for light and ventilation.

timnetworks··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
Absolutely.. but, sith are property of abcdisney. People are property of the Earth, until such a time we prove otherwise. We are less the landlords and more the squatters, with all sorts of events trying to evict us.[1][2][3]

timnetworks··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
ty for the correction and my sudden urge to research doorframe design
timnetworks··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
The planet started out a ball of molten stardust, completely inhospitable to life as we know it. But then there was not only life, but life detached from the ground too. Then K-T event wiped out almost all of it. But the planet kept going! It can be argued it got better and more diverse.

Are people in trouble? Perhaps. If we stop technological achievement in the name of a few degrees centigrade, then definitely.

timnetworks··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
And it's not just for websites.

Analogy: the doorframe is of a standard width so that a wheelchair can get through. This means manufacturers can make equipment that will fit in your house without calling you first! You never have to worry you bought a new refrigerator that needs to be pulled into a hole in the roof because it won't fit through the door. You never have to worry about delivering food to a grocer because your hand truck and boxes will fit, and there is a ramp instead of oddly shaped stairs. Nobody needs to be in a wheelchair for this.

timnetworks··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Developers: Let's encode the entirety of human knowledge into an easily downloadable archive that can be queried using natural language.

People that stand to gain the most from this: NO!

timnetworks··on I'm becoming AI-blind
I never understand why I can get better results, with less thinking about it, than some of the Tier1 companies.. Modern diffusion models can easily render the image onto a white background, center it, crop it, relight it, but keep the same item, at no cost, or low cost.

example: https://ordermerchants.com/static/img/clearshot/product-1.jp...

timnetworks··on The Amazon tax
The real amazon tax is getting people to think shipping fees are part of the item, and causing one $5 cable+shipping to be $10. Three $5 cables and shipping is $30. tbh if amazon went up in smoke like wildberries I would not even flinch.
timnetworks··on Mistral Patent for "Code implemented tool calls"
I read somewhere that the US Patent Office is like a candy store for other countries to pick up cool tech and continue local development.
timnetworks··on If technology got better, why did everything get worse?
It's because of product managers. And whomever created this position.
timnetworks··on Show HN: Slope remade in HTML5 to load instantly on any browser, any device
This is addictive.
timnetworks··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
That's very very nifty. The midwest is devoid of users, or cheap food, or both?

1. I can't add a thing, says address incorrect. Confirmed via google maps entry. 2. Drag and drop image upload expected by the dashed outlines but doesn't exist. 3. It should be possible to choose/save a location from a map after a search instead of entering it from blank fields. (see #1)

timnetworks··on How My Images Are Dithered
Is nobody going to mention anything about the fact that one of the friends at the restaurant has no _head_ ?
timnetworks··on 98.css
I wrapped many projects in 98.css. And some in Aero and even XP. Thank you!
timnetworks··on The Amazon tactics that hiked prices across the internet
Amazon is garbage. The majority of goods on amazon are trash too. Everything about it is shitty unless you think it's neat that a guy drives a truck clear across your town because you can't be bothered. And those people are trash too.
timnetworks··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
Unless the app is better than Chrome or Safari, make it a website. The world is a difficult place because of dolts that think others are as dumb as they are. People are okay to use a browser. Nobody wants your stupid app.
timnetworks··on EU Commission: addictive design Instagram and Facebook in breach of the DSA
I kind of wish they had developers that know how to get a video upload working from the website.

Alas, it all must have gotten scrapped for a llama workflow.

Website is worse than 15 years ago (code AND contents).

timnetworks··on Study finds no clear advantage for trans women over cisgender women in sports
A study would presumably also find no clear advantage in a fistfight between a husband and wife? Protecting half the population is countably higher stakes.
