timmit··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
I was planning for applying for AWS as well, but since their lay off, I didn't

Thanks for sharing.

timmit··on Ask HN: So you moved off Heroku, where did you go?
I write an article on Dev.to about the self host alternative for Heroku/PaaS.

Basically these three

- caprover

- dokku

- k8s

https://dev.to/timhub/self-host-heroku-alternative-40l4

timmit··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud?
Yes, I changed from AWS to Oracle, from Caprover to k8s, because of the Oracle Cloud Always Free resources, it can save $20/month, and give me 20 times more ram, 6 times more storage

I wrote a blog before the implementation. [move to k3s cluster](https://tim.bai.uno/how-to-deploy-a-django-application-to-a-...)

timmit··on Launch HN: Slai (YC W22) – Build ML models quickly and deploy them as apps
I had the similar idea in 2018, to transfer AI model to API endpoints. but I did not do anything. :cry
timmit··on Show HN: WAPM – WebAssembly Package Manager
Wait, I thought originally it was a NPM for WebAssembly.

But it looks like a WebAssembly version of Homebrew.

timmit··on SimpleDB: A Basic RDBMS Built from Scratch
Nice work.

The only one comment to add is

Amazon has an Amazon SimpleDB.

So different name might be before for your branding.

timmit··on A Better Git Flow
It makes sense sometime, but not always. Group commits by files.

For example,

Most of one core change is in multiple files, it will be very bad to commit by files group

timmit··on Ask HN: Good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
I used umami, an open source one, it used to be release frequently.

and I amde some contribution to containalize it

timmit··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
I can't believe it, it doesn't make any sense to me, can u have a dispute with all these emails?
timmit··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Scenario A

- A guy he wrote codes for two hours, - he got stuck, so went out and bought a coffee took him one hours - during buying the coffee, he got an idea to solve the problem and solved

--- Should this 1 hour be counted as work or rest?

--- Scenario B

A guy he worked as a consultant (pay by hour)

- he was off for a day - he got some idea during his off - next day, he solved the problem for a client

= Should his off day be considered as work time?

timmit··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
Yeah, as a mac user, I could not believe it,

I sold my pro (2015) Bought a pro (2019) with 4 usb-c, even I missed the megasafe.

Now they changed back to 2015, feel cheated by Apple :(

timmit··on I write code 100 hours/week, here's why I probably won't stop
How do you feel in the other 68 hours when you are not coding?

What do your friends and family say about it?

timmit··on Why Telegram had to follow Apple and Google when they suspended a voting app
If the app is a website or a webapp.

I am pretty sure the pressure will be given to the host and domain register.

timmit··on Why Telegram had to follow Apple and Google when they suspended a voting app
Yeah, true, the problem is basically becoming

Whether an app should block a bot/user when the app store blocks the bot app?

=> Whether an app / telegram with third party extension/bot ability would be considered as similar to an app store? => Whether a bot built on a private application ecosystem should be considered as an independent app?

timmit··on AWS Region Coming to New Zealand
One reason is cost. The other i think is the number of services.

If I recall correctly, some dns services are in us east only only u host it in other region.

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/general/latest/gr/r53.html

Name registration is in us east only. DNS resolving is in a few specific regions

timmit··on AWS Region Coming to New Zealand
Pretty funny thing, as a person in a start-up in sourth pacific, we host our products in us-east-1 region, even most of our customers are based in NZ and AUS. We only use sydney region as a testing environment.
timmit··on AWS Region Coming to New Zealand
And don't forget.

11 years ago, Kim Dotcom came to New Zealand.

timmit··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
Looks like a really good laptop hardware.

It would be great if the windows is not pre-installed, and let Linux lovers have the opportunity to opt-out and get dollars back (the windows os license fee)

timmit··on Apple can read your iMessages (even though they’re E2E encrypted)
These two toggle are funny.

- back my encrypted data - back my encryption key (if back encryption key, the e2e does not make any sense)

What the encryption key will be used to encrypt the e2e encryption key?

timmit··on Ask HN: How do you organize your knowledge?
Joplin notebook for personal knowledge

Tiddlywiki for a public knowledge base

timmit··on Minio Changes License to AGPL
purpose???
timmit··on See a Satellite Tonight
CORS blocked :(
timmit··on Piscina – The Node.js Worker Pool
I assume u can, but how it performs, it really dependents on the virtual CPU of the, platform.

I did something similar

https://github.com/tim-hub/pambdajs

but I haven't done the comparison on aws lambda yet

timmit··on Piscina – The Node.js Worker Pool
u remind me my own researching project too.

timmit··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
I cannnot say it is benifecial for delivery, but it is beneficial for engineers, cos' focusing on processing not the results.

A good agile process, make development work less stress.

timmit··on Cyberbrain: Python Debugging Redefined
good tool, but I cannot see a graph debugging tool is better than a normal CLI debugging tool. :)
timmit··on macOS Big Sur
sidecar is one thing I like from Catalina.
timmit··on How to publish Git repos that cannot be republished to GitHub
publish to gitlab :)
timmit··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I did transfer my names from GD to NC last month :) :) :)
timmit··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
That is terrible.

I did get a very similar situation,

I searched one domain, and about a month later, when I searched again, it is registered.

I did not check how long the domain age was, but I felt so disappointed that time.
