timlod··on New “Android Go” phones show how much you can get for $100
I have the recent one (G5), and it has both. 2 Sim card slots, SD card slot, replacable battery. The first one also had a replacable battery. Didn't know the 3rd Generation didn't! In that case I'm glad they reverted their design in that regard.

> This also means the battery is—get this—replaceable! When you take off the back you can actually pull the battery out and—if you have an extra on hand—replace it with a fully charged battery. Amazing.

Not sure if this is meant to be a joke... My understanding that most lower-tier phones have replacable batteries, at least my last phones (from the Moto G series) had.

timlod··on OpenBoard – An interactive whiteboard for schools and universities
Thanks for sharing, what a fun and clever solution!
timlod··on Yes, Google Uses Its Power to Quash Ideas It Doesn’t Like
When I read this (and many other people commenting about how they find certain search results biased) I always wonder how much search personalisation is at play. Google records everything you do that can be connected with their services and creates your profile based on that. Now, if you receive seemingly biased search results, are those Google's 'raw' results or results that Google thinks you'd prefer based on your profile?
timlod··on Have a colleague who sends too many emails? Let him know, anonymously
Would be nice to know what this does without trying it with your own email address. I didn't see anything to click on other than submit, or is there?
timlod··on Thieves Who Steal Sunken Warships, Right Down to the Bolts
The article also discusses the fact that sunken vessels are home to a lot of marine life - local fisheries get their catch there, as the wildlife thrives in those locations. Thus salvaging the steel robs local folk of their income.
timlod··on How Stripe teaches employees to code
No, I meant to praise Stripe (or at least how they appear to me based on what you read about them in public) first and foremost. As many articles you read about companies these days highlight negative practices (I mentioned Uber as the prime example), it's nice to read when companies seem to do good.
timlod··on How Stripe teaches employees to code
Everytime there's a post about Stripe, it is a positive post. Programms they initiate, people they hire, how they act in their business. To me they seem like an example of a 'good' company with great culture as opposed to what you read about Uber [edit: removed caps] and co. these days, very refreshing!
timlod··on Nintendo Switch review: pure potential
The Switch is supposed to have excellent hardware.

Also, the majority of people at preview events (greatly) praised the motion controls of the upcoming game ARMS. HD Rumble also is reported to be amazing.

I for one am excited to play with what may be the first really great motion controls.

timlod··on Anagram Scoring
I really enjoyed this.

Nice solution to put the (sorted by letters) words into a hash table to find the anagrams.

timlod··on $5 Showdown: Linode vs. DigitalOcean vs. Amazon Lightsail vs. Vultr
Agreed, I have used several of their tutorials to get things working on my droplet. The tutorials rank high in search and often happen to be exactly what I am looking for (that does not happen often!).

E.g. just this week I used their tutorial to secure nginx with Let's Encrypt which worked perfectly.

timlod··on Why does e to pi i equal -1? (2015) [video]
I love the Khan Academy video on this:

Sal's enthusiasm at the end is contagious!

timlod··on Introducing Keybase Chat
I just installed the app but still get asked for an invitation code. The chat sounds great, looking forward to try it out! edit: Nevermind, on the website I wasn't asked.
timlod··on LibreTaxi – A free and open source alternative to Uber and Lyft
You used to be able not to use any of their payment services. Also identity verification processes that they offer/ed are/were not obligatory. So in many cases references were all people used to trust someone.

(I have been using the service for years)

timlod··on Emailing SaaS companies to test support time
I think talking of average when the sample size is 2 is misleading. I find such a test (and possible conclusions) interesting, just wished it was carried out in a more rigorous way...
timlod··on Atom Reaches One Million Active Users
Perhaps it's the package update checker? I have it turned on by default and couldn't find an option to turn it off (assuming it's different from the Atom update checker, which updates the editor).
timlod··on Why the German language has so many great words
Lots of the words mentioned in the article are not of common use in German. They are great words, though! For the attentive reader: https://www.google.de/maps/@53.5660642,9.9655336,3a,15y,64.5...
