timjver··on SENS Research Foundation Receives $2.4M Ethereum Donation from Vitalik Buterin
What makes it immoral for Buterin to have a large amount of Ether? Would it be immoral for a very early investor to buy a lot of Ether for a very low price?
timjver··on SENS Research Foundation Receives $2.4M Ethereum Donation from Vitalik Buterin
>Considering his share of ethereum is worth billions

timjver··on Proof of burn: An alternative method for distributed consensus
Doesn't the Proof of Stake algorithm protect against Sybil attacks by trusting participants based on how much they are staking?
timjver··on Bitcoin Traders Claim There’s Method to Their Madness
They were probably referring to the fees that exchanges charge.
timjver··on Open Beta of Texpad 1.8, macOS LaTeX editor with integrated realtime typesetting
Good luck!
timjver··on List Comprehension in Swift
> It’s a really compact syntax that deals with Cartesian product of lists.

Couldn't taking the subset of a Cartesian product be considered to be dealing with one?

>2. When trying to recover an older account, the recovery keeps asking for my phone number but isn't sending me texts properly. If you say you lost your phone, you can submit id+selfie, but to get to that step, you need your phone??

I did this a week ago. They ask you for your current (= old) phone number and your new phone number, but you don't actually need access to your old phone number. You just need to enter it.

timjver··on Swift 4.0 Released
You don't need commas :)
timjver··on New iPhone leaks show tap to wake, attention detection, and virtual home button
The screen cut-out at the top might be distinctive enough to serve the same purpose.
timjver··on Solving the Rubik's Cube Optimally Is NP-Complete
It only took you a few minutes, together with your daughter, to write code that lets you interact with a Rubik's Cube? Or were you only referring to the solver part?
timjver··on Solving the Rubik's Cube Optimally Is NP-Complete
A 4x4x4 definitely has parity issues that don't arise on a 3x3x3.
timjver··on Swift's Evolution
They were pretty clear about this from the beginning... Sometimes you need to break a few things here and there to make it a more pleasant language for the decades to come.
timjver··on Swift is like Kotlin
There's a PR that fixes one of them which was filed on December 22 of last year... Yikes.
timjver··on Update on the Swift Project Lead
Tesla, apparently.
timjver··on Update on the Swift Project Lead
Swift 3 code will be able to be used alongside Swift 4 code, in the future, but that's not to say that Swift 4 won't contain any breaking changes (it will).
timjver··on Update on the Swift Project Lead
Did you read the email at all?

This decision wasn't made lightly, and I want you all to know that I’m still completely committed to Swift. I plan to remain an active member of the Swift Core Team, as well as a contributor to the swift-evolution mailing list.

timjver··on Swift: Challenges and Opportunity for Language and Compiler Research [pdf]
Living with x++ wouldn't be terrible, but I don't mind having to make changes to my code now that Swift is still very new if it ends up becoming a better language. Teaching x++ and ++x to beginners can be quite a pain.
timjver··on Swift: Challenges and Opportunity for Language and Compiler Research [pdf]
Not disagreeing with anything that you're saying, except that dictionaries are declared `[Key: Value]` and not `[Key, Value]`.

By the way, rather than using `.filter { ... }.first`, you should really use `.first(where: { ... })` instead. `filter` will iterate the entire sequence, while `first(where:)` stops after it finds a match.

But the new one might not have fans.
timjver··on “No, I'm the ex-CEO of Reddit because eventually there was too much bullshit.”
The point still stands. Coders shouldn't have to deal with that.
timjver··on Formal Verification Creates Hacker-Proof Code
"seems unlikely" isn't really cutting it, when we're talking about formal systems.
timjver··on More Details Emerge About the Soylent Food Bars Making People Sick
I've seen several blood test results posted to the Soylent subreddit, and those generally are very positive.

I know that's not a scientific study by any means, and people should be skeptical, but there really is a lot of (anecdotal) evidence out there of Soylent having a positive impact on people's diets. On the other hand, I've hardly seen any evidence of Soylent having a negative impact on someone's health.

timjver··on More Details Emerge About the Soylent Food Bars Making People Sick
Perhaps not optimal, but in a lot of cases probably a lot better than someone's previous diet.
timjver··on More Details Emerge About the Soylent Food Bars Making People Sick
>I find it hard to believe Soylent can provide all the nutrition you need.

Why?

timjver··on Swift 3.0 Released
The renaming of flatten to joined was a last-minute proposal, and it wasn't even implemented by someone of Swift's core team. I don't think it distracted the team much at all.

Also, breaking changes such as this one were a lot easier to make in Swift 3 than in a later version.

timjver··on Swift 3.0 Released
Yes, this is what Swift 2.3 is for.
timjver··on Swift 3.0 Released
A major release doesn't necessarily have any breaking changes. Swift 4 will contain some breaking changes for sure, but Swift 5 might not.
timjver··on New haskell-lang.org
Interestingly, the Community page has a link to /r/haskell instead of /r/haskell_lang.
