timje1··on ‘The Trains Are Slower Because They Slowed the Trains Down’
A closer parallel might be the London Underground, that manages 55-60mph.

The new Elizabeth line is apparently going to go up to 90 miles per hour, but that is probably only for when the train leaves London and heads out to neighbouring towns (it's essentially a subway line that also connects commuter towns to London).

timje1··on The Netherlands has become an agricultural giant
Devil's advocate: It's possible your sense of smell and taste is less sharp than what it was when you were a kid.
timje1··on Workplace flexibility is the way to win the war for talent
I can't remember the exact details, but I remember there being a British study that found that cutting an hour a day off your commute increases your happiness more than a ~30% payrise (figures misremembered).

If you've gotten back two hours a day, that's a massive quality of life improvement!

timje1··on Another Ransomware Outbreak Is Going Global
This is also a fabulously entertaining novel.
timje1··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O.
Ha, nice use of "borrow".
timje1··on The Old Are Eating the Young
I remember reading that the average retired person in the UK earns more (higher _income_) than the average worker, so that's before you work out the 'wealth' bit.

And 80% of the country's wealth is with the 60+ crowd (this is getting worse, if anyone has stats that include 2015 / 2016 it'd be appreciated). As they've got both greater wealth and income than the young, and this is getting worse, I think it'd be foolish to call the problem a distraction.

timje1··on Software Developers after 40, 50 and 60 Who're Still Coding
Ha, this happened to me a couple of weeks ago!

timje1··on Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds
I love this concept as a defence against the 'well virtually anything can be proven wrong or right' anti-knowledge argument...
timje1··on Snap Tumbles Below IPO Opening Price as Analysts Say Sell
You've got to remember that Investment Banks have two sets of customers -> the big investors who they want to please and their corporate clients who want to sell shares. In recent times the big investors have become massively more powerful than anyone else, private equity hasn't had a crash like banking has.

In recent times a safe bet for the banks has been to underprice the IPO so that their big investor clients make lots of profit in the first couple of days, and then to weather the storm of the disappointed public company.

The newly public company won't actually do as much future business with the bank as the big investors will.

timje1··on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review
I played both, and I remember talking loudly and often about how much better WoW looked despite having a fraction of the system reqs. WoW vanilla could be run on a potato - I think I had it going on a pentium 2 with a third hand graphics card...
timje1··on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review
I remember thinking at the time "wow, the characters look like ass". I think the character models look worse than Final Fantasy X, which was a game with good art direction and miniscule polycount that came out in 2001.
timje1··on 'Tooth repair drug' may replace fillings
It gets more fun when you start to think about it as different consciousness being created and destroyed, each with the same memories.

At what point do we start being afraid to fall asleep?

timje1··on Android user locked out of Google after moving cities
I had a similar issue, except after some asking around it turned out that the entire street's internet would go down when it rained heavily (in England, so this is pretty often). It still took around a year to get fixed.
timje1··on What I learned from spending 3 months applying to jobs after a coding bootcamp
Not really, anywhere that's convenient to London has basically the same prices as London. If you do end up saving money it's because you're taking one of those awkward 90minute+ journeys.
timje1··on The psychology of stress and burnout
That's funny, I thought the same about skiing.
timje1··on Quit Social Media, Your Career May Depend on It
I just simply changed my bookmarks to point to https://news.ycombinator.com/over?points=280 - which gets shaken up by a couple of new stories per day, but doesn't actually change enough to justify visiting every hour.
timje1··on Video Games Are Boring
This actually offended me the most about Dragon Age : Inquisition - the way that every interaction with the world seemed to be 'hit it with your sword'.

Early on you find a region which contains groups of Templars battling rogue sorcerers, so I thought that you'd get some interesting interactions where you have to pick a side, or play mediator, lending your strength to one of these opposed factions. Instead we got the worst kind of videogame logic - both sides were hostile to me, permanently, with no chance of talking to either of them. Approach within a certain distance and they'll attack you until they or you are dead - the sort of mindless hostility that can only be excused in zombie games. And to top it all off, both sides kept respawning after I killed them, so their silly, pointless tussles go on indefinitely.

timje1··on Emperor Akihito of Japan Raises Possibility of Leaving Throne
Quick FYI - factoid: a false fact that is repeated often enough to become accepted as true.
timje1··on Hello from Orkut
Wait, so the guy's name means orgasms? Oh dear oh dear. This must cause problems for Turkish men in Finland. Kind of like the unfortunate Indian family name Dikshit.
timje1··on Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest
Earlier puberty normally results in a shorter adult - since kids tend to grow slowly before puberty and stop once it finishes.

timje1··on Introduction to GPU Password Cracking: Owning the LinkedIn Password Dump
Do you have a source for that? It was my understanding that PBKDF2 is 'good enough for now', but not necessarily the most future-proof of techs, given how easily the algorithm is optimised for GFX cards.
timje1··on How an underwater fantasy blockbuster turned into a legendary movie fiasco
in console - $('img').hide();
timje1··on How do you stop a randomized game from randomly being boring sometimes?
Hearthstone fixed this mana issue by having the mana automatically increase by 1 each turn, up to 10. This means that every card you draw will be a spell you can cast or a minion you can play - you at least get to play 'hearthstone' during the match.
timje1··on For life expectancy, money matters
Unfortunately ageing doesn't tend to be 'some years tacked on the end', it tends to be literally getting older at a different rate.

So some 40 year-olds are physically 30, and other 40 year-olds are physically 55. (going by length of telomeres, physical fitness, etc etc). So these people that die earlier have a shorted 'prime of their life' as well.

timje1··on How Scams Worked in the 1800s
MMOs are generally a good place for this stuff.

I knew a fellow who would offer to offer to buy expensive runes in Shadowbane for, say, 250k gold - and then when the time came for the trade he'd slice a 0 off the amount of gold he put in the trade window. Perhaps this sort of scam is helped by small font and large currency inflation.

timje1··on Jeff Bezos’ letter to shareholders
A tangent, but when did 'cargo-cult' become a verb and not a noun?
timje1··on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Remote Work After 5 Years of Experience
Scott Hanselman hacked a light outside his home office to indicate his Lync (now Skype for Business) status.

I always though this was a novel way of indicating to the kids whether he could be disturbed when doing remote working.
