timhastings··on NASA creates groundbreaking super black light absorbing material
Well done NASA!

This sounds like the same futuristic material coating the super-fast spaceship that Zaphod and Ford Prefect were admiring outside Milliways in Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

timhastings··on Novell acquired by Attachmate Corporation
I would imagine Microsoft would find Mono a very useful Novell asset to get control of.

Thanks!

There are a lot of moving parts, but these are separate sub-systems with well defined boundaries of interaction. Each sub-system is implemented using technologies selected for specific characteristics.

Mono for long-running and complex backend processes.

nginx, PHP, MySQL, memcache - for presentation - quick!

node.js provides an event bus between PHP and Mono

MongoDB is taking over from storing large blobs of JSON in MySQL.

I'm cooking up a Twitter Recommendation Engine for users, hashtags, and links etc.

I am using the LNNMMMMP stack at the moment... Linux, nginx, node.js, memcached, MySQL, Mono, MongoDB and PHP.

Am I normal?

You have got to admire the evil villany we're up against. Buying the 'M' in LAMP and then exploiting that position.

Business first, not the heart and minds of developers.

Luckily the 'L' + 'A' + 'P' cannot be bought.

LAPP stack anyone?

timhastings··on An online dating site for ugly people - welcome to reality
I love that you conducted A/B testing with different user profiles. That makes you more attractive to geeks :-)
timhastings··on Ask HN: Review my app: Firetweets
Nice one, thanks, and good luck with Firetweets!

There is tons of job tweets, but most have "job" in the username and/or app source. Also any app source that contains "bot" or "feed" is most likely safe to ignore.

timhastings··on Ask HN: Review my app: Firetweets
It's many pronged approach. User timelines are loaded for "reputable" users, (see blog for computing reputation) and search input is used with primative bayesian filtering.

In my experience, I have found Tweet source (web, Tweetdeck, API etc.) to be one of the most effective quality/authenticity indicators.

Cool, thanks for the link. Sorry if the colour scheme made your eyes bleed - I'm still experimenting with that. :-)
timhastings··on Ask HN: Review my app: Firetweets
Thank you.

It already works for any hashtags or usernames that it encounters, here's #sundaybaconclub http://tagwalk.com/tag/sundaybaconclub

Here's a similar link collecting service I've been developing, e.g. for #nodejs http://tagwalk.com/tag/nodejs
timhastings··on Big Bang Abandoned In New Model of the Universe
Does this means our Big Bang generation will be mocked like the Earth-is-flat believers?
timhastings··on Visualizing Time Zones
I agree. Really useful. Picking just the timezones you are interested in would make it perfect for the job. Great work!
