timdaub··on Why HN is a decade behind on crypto
Shameless plug, I've actually spent the last 2 years working on a HN alternative for crypto people because I got similarly frustrated with the HN community. It's still online and we're kinda trying to get an influx of people who'd like to use such a product. I'm not going to disclose the product name here because I feel like I'd be risking getting moderated. That said, if you wanna check this out please message me in private and I'm happy to send the link to you. My bio should have info
timdaub··on Grokipedia and the coup against reality
Hey CupricTea,

I'm working on building a social media site that wants to improve on moderation and I've found the case of the Grokipedia curious. So I'd love to get in touch with your but didn't find any details in your bio. Please reach out to me and let's do a user interview (can be via email too). My contacts are in my bio

timdaub··on Pentagon orders states' national guards to form 'quick reaction forces'
Hey clanky!

I'm building a social media product myself and I saw your comment here. So I wanted to reach out and ask if you'd be up to talk about how moderation could be improved online. My contact data is in my bio!

timdaub··on Turns Out, Wikipedia Isn't That 'Woke' as Grokipedia Rips Off Most of Its Pages
Hey, if anyone thinks this article was wrongfully flagged, please contact me via my email in the description and lets talk. I'm building a startup related to moderation on social media so I'd like to user interview you
timdaub··on Nine months later, is still the "Gulf of Mexico" to news outlets
Hey I'm working on a product related to flagged content. Would you be willing to talk to me?
timdaub··on Anonymous crypto wallets now illegal in the EU
Weird because this guy said that hosted wallets are now banned so what now?

https://twitter.com/echo_pbreyer/status/1770853123633877233

Edit: I think this guy, which mind you is a member of parliament, just confused hosted with self-hosted. We're so fucked

timdaub··on Tesla Berlin gigafactory goes dark after alleged eco-sabotage
This framing is a concession to people who are terrorists. Many people who are optimistically working towards a better future (and here I mean broadly almost anyone) are not arguing for "infinite growth in closed systems." Everyone is and has been trying to optimize things as well as it is in their capability to improve the situation.
timdaub··on Reddit S1
I'm building an HN clone, and underpinning is a set reconciliation protocol. https://kiwinews.xyz
timdaub··on I must build “what I want” and then “what other people want.”
yeah, precisely as I laid out in my post too. But Brian Armstrong took the "build what I want" option when it came to a "decision that could be life changing to thousands of people"
timdaub··on [dead]
Yes, you are right. I'm blending the issues here. But see, I'm a EU citizen living in Berlin and naturally I've come to Milan for work and vacation, expecting to use ChatGPT. And frankly, I find it unacceptable that the Italian Garante took the initiative here and outright banned it.

POLITICO reports:

> The Italian privacy regulator Friday ordered a ban on ChatGPT over alleged privacy violations.

> The national data protection authority said it will immediately block and investigate OpenAI, the U.S. company behind the popular artificial intelligence tool, from processing the data of Italian users. The order is temporary until the company respects the EU's landmark privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Ah yes? How do Milan and Berlin differ from Brussels?
timdaub··on My deleted response to Pirate Wires' Nuclear Disasters
yeah I found that pretty funny and it was the reason I re-uploaded my answer. Bit surprised that he'd "delete" my response because I'm not a subscriber. For the record, he left another free subscriber's answer online

timdaub··on My deleted response to Pirate Wires' Nuclear Disasters
Btw. I don't have a book in Nuclear/renewables. Not sure if my friend Mike can say the same.
timdaub··on My deleted response to Pirate Wires' Nuclear Disasters
Diversity is where it's at! Heatwaves can also drain the rivers that cool nuclear plants! We need a more resilient grid and diversity of production is probably the answer here, isn't it?
timdaub··on My deleted response to Pirate Wires' Nuclear Disasters
You're right. I just thought the nuclear debate in the last few days was so heavily in favor of "nuclear is silver bullet for climate change" that I felt like publishing my thoughts too. It's not all gold that shines.
timdaub··on My deleted response to Pirate Wires' Nuclear Disasters
> OP handwaves away issue of nuclear safety, incorrectly labelling it a straw man, and with it, the very real possibility of nuclear accidents. If there was a Chernobyl-scale nuclear accident in Germany, it would drastically shorten the lives of tens of millions of people, and it would make half the country uninhabitable.

IMO Solana's article is a maximalist position and I trust that no "nuclear-unsafe" argument would ever get through to him. It'd just be "agree to disagree.' Besides, there are great arguments that make the "nuclear is a silver bullet" argument of his bad if one exposes all of the nuances that went into the German decison - and that was my idea with the response.

you are so mean
timdaub··on Show HN: Kiwinews is a decentralized HN using set reconciliation
oh damn
timdaub··on Show HN: Kiwinews is a decentralized HN using set reconciliation
you can run a node, build a frontend and knock yourself out with moderating. The frontend is like a VIEW table in a database. It rearranges the data but doesn‘t alter the underlying tables. So e.g. you can have a kiwi HN with HN-like moderation
timdaub··on Show HN: Kiwinews is a decentralized HN using set reconciliation
yes, among other things rampant crypto hate here is another one

- code: https://github.com/attestate/kiwistand

and yes, I built this because I don't like moderation policies on HN haha

timdaub··on Doomerism Marketing is dangerous too
thanks for the nice feedback, I appreciate it.

Actually, regarding your sentiment, I also wrote a post where I said that the technology is good, but that people overhype it

timdaub··on Twitter won’t allow retweeting tweets linking to Substack
Farcaster and web3 fixes this, but all of your identities are so overloaded with past web3 hate that you‘ll never be able to admit it
timdaub··on The chat control proposal does not belong in democratic societies
I can‘t believe the citizens of a country have to stand up against mass surveillance every few years. This is nonsense. I guess we‘ll see more approaches like Signal and crypto where digital policy is being executed upon without the involvement of corrupt lawyers.
timdaub··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
so if I own $1M in Treasury bills I'll get them back while if I own $1M in cash then I'll get back $250k?
timdaub··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Would love to understand if this is actually good financial advice here. My bank plays broker for all the assets I own and tbills are part of that.

FDIC wrote:

> As the FDIC sells the assets of Silicon Valley Bank, future dividend payments may be made to uninsured depositors.

So to me that sounds like those „risk-free“ assets will get liquidated too.

I‘d love to hear an actual professional confirm/deny this. Because if it‘s true, then the real risk-free assets are gold, in your teeth, real-estate and BTC.

timdaub··on <3 Deno
this was an interesting read, although the beginning was a bit confusing.

I laughed a little when I saw the author hinting at TS creating complex structures. A reason I never adopted it. A great use of TS would be to type the external interfaces though!

timdaub··on Tell HN: Sadly, my blog post's title was moderated
Yeah that's fine. But you have to consider that an article called "LLM discourse needs more nuance" will never make it in the /new sub page on HN. There is so much competition that uses the same tricks but potentially less apparent than what meets the eye. Please try writing something meaningful yourself and make it work. Headline is the only thing that defines the CTR on HN, so a submitter has to make it stand out, there is no other way.

I didn't intend to insult the AI crowd as in "Millions of people are stupid." (as in e.g. "you, ML engineer are stupid"! I did NOT intend that). But in a stampede or a market mania people don't get hurt because of the individual's stupidity. They get hurt because of herd behavior, and it's tragic. But that's a group dynamic and isn't insulting people individually.
