tilolebo··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
How does AWS lock you more than DO? Because they have a more comprehensive offering?
tilolebo··on Total Cookie Protection
Does that mean retargeting won't work anymore on Firefox?
tilolebo··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
And I read your comment as "ethical ads" and was wondering what I got wrong from the GP comment, ahah.
tilolebo··on Ask HN: Anyone know any funny programming jokes?
A programmer had a problem. He thought to himself: "I know, I'll solve this with threads!"

has Now problems. two he

tilolebo··on Software effort estimation is mostly fake research
There's also the problem of of a company working on multiple construction sites in parallel.

In software engineering, this also happens of course, especially if you develop in house. And you also need to factor in the maintenance, as it's usually performed by the same team.

tilolebo··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
I wish European companies would offer stock options as part of their compensation package.

The only European company that offered me something similar was SAP and it was a ridiculous one time 9k EUR.

The American 4-year vesting system is much more attractive. But somehow EU startups won't do that.

tilolebo··on How WhatsApp works with other Facebook products
How does this technically work? Does Econet use a dns-based filter?
tilolebo··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
Isn't it so that monitors or laptops under the same model sometimes use different panels?
tilolebo··on Suspicions grow that nanoparticles in Pfizer vaccine trigger allergic reactions
"Pfizer’s and Moderna’s clinical trials of the vaccines, which involved tens of thousands of people, did not find serious adverse events caused by the vaccine. But both studies excluded people with a history of allergies to components of the COVID-19 vaccines; Pfizer also excluded those who previously had a severe adverse reaction from any vaccine. People with previous allergic reactions to food or drugs were not excluded, but may have been underrepresented."

Is this the regular procedure for vaccines clinical trials?

tilolebo··on Ask HN: Best Paid Gmail Replacement?
I started using Fastmail around a year ago.

Great web and Android apps, simple and fast. I contacted their support once and wasn't disappointed.

No issues at all until last week: they lost an incoming email (which was actually spam, as they could share with me the subject and sender info) due to a bug during an upgrade on their side. They credited my account with US $5 as apology.

tilolebo··on Google Analytics Opt Out
The current code, though.

I suppose it's possible for Google to push new versions of the plugin, so you'd have to review each of them. Does the user even get notified when a new version is pushed?

This plugin makes no sense, any informed user who cares enough about privacy to install would go for a more generic blocker anyway, such as uBlock Origin

tilolebo··on Amazon Managed Service for Grafana
Grafana is one of the easiest internal services to host.

They follow the 12-factor app principles, provide a ready-to-use docker image, support various auth providers ( my company uses GitHub), integrates well with AWS IAM, etc.

As someone else said here, you just have to use RDS to store the state.

tilolebo··on Burnt $72k testing Firebase and Cloud Run and almost went bankrupt
The main reason why cloud providers can't provide this killswitch feature everybody talk about here is probably that they just can't.

I don't think any of them is capable of billing in real time.

So the monitoring would have to happen on resource consumption. This is already enforced with resource limits in many cases.

tilolebo··on We read the paper that forced Timnit Gebru out of Google
This.

It was literally her job to conduct such research. It's not politics, it's ethics (tethics)

tilolebo··on Salesforce Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Slack
Discord is awesome but do they propose any kind of plan for businesses?
tilolebo··on Salesforce Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Slack
Damn it, here we go again :-(
tilolebo··on Hire people who give a shit
That's exactly where it comes from :-)
tilolebo··on Hire people who give a shit
"Making the world a better place through ${place your product core feature here}"
tilolebo··on Hire people who give a shit
/sarcasm on

Does that work if the candidate is obsessed not by something but by someone?

tilolebo··on Hire people who give a shit
> If someone is applying to Scale and has never been deeply obsessed about something before, then it’s a bad bet to think Scale will be the first.

So you mean that you're looking for unbalanced people? I don't get how being obsessed about a product equates to long term success for an employee in your company. To me it's more like a recipe for burnout.

What's the employee turnover at Scale?

tilolebo··on Windows Subsystem for Linux: The lost potential
No words can describe WSL1 better than those from Gavin Belson talking about Nucleus:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrO9ZZlg32w

tilolebo··on My platonic ideal for how engineering hiring should work
So what about certifications?

To me it looks exactly like the kind of credentials the article describes.

tilolebo··on Waypoint: Build, deploy, and release applications across any platform
Ooops, burned :P
tilolebo··on Waypoint: Build, deploy, and release applications across any platform
I'm not Mitchell but I think this page already answers your question:

https://www.waypointproject.io/docs/automating-execution

So basically you can integrate waypoint to your existing CI/CD solution.

Kind of using it as a Makefile for pipelines, if I understand correctly.

tilolebo··on Terraform at Scale
I agree as well. Hell, even the vscode official extension doesn't support multi-folders workspaces.
tilolebo··on Terraform at Scale
You can very easily reference resources by using an AWS data source (gets resource info directly from the AWS APIs) or using a terraform remote state data source (gets info from the relevant terraform state file outputs).

Another way is to use a KV store, like AWS SSM Parameter Store or consul. This is useful to link your infra to your CI/CD or even directly to your application

tilolebo··on Terraform at Scale
> Features are available almost instantly

If SAM relies on Cloud Formation, there must have been some serious changes at AWS. CF was/is notoriously lagging behind AWS console and API in terms of feature coverage.

The Terraform AWS provider has always been much faster to reflect the AWS API changes.

tilolebo··on Progress is laying off Chef folks
Really sad to see Chef dying this way.

Hugs to all employees affected by the layoffs.

tilolebo··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
Your message is actually much more problematic than its parent, IMO.
tilolebo··on The Social Dilemma
The problem isn't only the dynamics, but the regulation that comes with the technology.

In many countries, TV is highly regulated: can't advertise for alcohol or cigarettes, political speech time is measured to make sure each "camp" get the same exposure, etc.

There's no such thing on social media.

Same goes for Uber, Airbnb & co, by the way, although this is easier to regulate.
