tijs··on Google Apps Disabled My Domain
I'm quite happy with Fastmail.fm, there are not that many options out there i'm afraid.
tijs··on DuckDuckHack
Pretty cool, and made me try DuckDuckGo as my default browser again. As for the DuckDuckHacks site; i'm missing an exhaustive overview of which 'hacks' are already done/being worked on.. for instance; python is already live as far as i can tell but it isn't in the Fathead repo. So if i have some other idea how do i quickly check if it's not already being worked on or maybe even available?
tijs··on How I automated the boring parts of life
From the site it seems like they are setup reasonably well for international customers but since all the staff is in the US some things like calling them or having them call people will be less than ideal. Also i can imagine that they have some partners and go-to solutions setup for requests in the US which they simply would not have for european customers.

I was thinking along the same lines. I'd much rather 'pre pay' for tasks than have a monthly limit. Else i'll have to think if a task is worthwhile enough to use up one of my 5 tasks. And i would hate to run out of task slots some months but just not often enough to warrant an upgrade.
tijs··on Makisu - CSS 3D dropdown concept
And lo and behold; the menu folds up just like one of those mats. Japanese yes, random no.
tijs··on Google Voice lost my business number. How I got it back, and what I learned.
I should have maybe clarified that i too have moved to Fastmail (about a year ago) and am a happy customer. But both the price and the UI leave a lot of room for improvement, i.e. competitors.

And yes moving mail out of Gmail was a pain because of the weird IMAP structure they use.

tijs··on [dead]
I see some email addresses referring to recent cases in there, i.e. findwhitey@ic.fbi gov. I wonder if these guys just tipped off mobsters still under investigation... or even read some of those case mailing lists (presuming that's what they are).
tijs··on A Private Bus Company Debuts in Detroit
because great businesses, for both customers and employees, are not built on pure efficiency.
tijs··on Google Voice lost my business number. How I got it back, and what I learned.
I'm still looking for a great alternative to Gmail/Google apps for my business email. Something that supports IMAP and has a reasonable webmail front end. Fastmail is the closest thing i've found but this could be a perfectly fine startup which probably simply isn't sexy enough for anything to actually go and do.
tijs··on FBI renews broad Internet surveillance push
Interesting point. It could actually hurt american companies. With privacy becoming a more mainstream concern people might well steer clear of companies that have to give access to the FBI and go for european alternatives. Not that the EU doesn't screw up but at least they seem to hold privacy in higher regard.
tijs··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
Planning to, but i bet they've fixed it by the time i'll get there.
tijs··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
I live in the Netherlands and it seems to work like a charm so far. the whole upheaval sounds like an internet pile-on to me.
tijs··on Legit Teams: Private git repository hosting tailored for small teams
Just created a test account. Pretty slick for a side project. Love the TODO list feature. Like others have mentioned i too worry about the pricing though. I have several people pushing each day and pulls from multiple servers as i deploy straight from the git repo. Slow pushes are the worst and at this price range i dont see you guys making that work once people really start using your product.

I think it actually looks better than bitbucket which some have mentioned which to me looks really cluttered.

I am not a student though so maybe i should not be looking at this as an option for a business anyway, but still...

tijs··on Grove.io shutting down
Well yes, but doesn't it's usefulness come from the tight integration with gmail only features? disclaimer; i only used Sparrow for a bit a long time ago so perhaps they've made these features work in regular IMAP as well..
tijs··on Grove.io shutting down
Looks pretty good actually (from the screenshot), you even have an iPhone app and everything. Why not just charge a small something, even if it's only to get you a nice side income? Somebody mentioned $5/month as a reasonable price for something like this. For me personally that would make me less hesitant to sign up as currently it would seem you could pull the plug any moment. Unless you like the idea of being able to pull the plug at any moment of course, which of course is your prerogative.
tijs··on Grove.io shutting down
"Forever" being until Google changes their service which is probably about every few months.
tijs··on WhatsApp is broken, really broken
Like WhatsApp, Viber is free to use and has no advertising model. If they are not making money off me directly i have to wonder how safe my data actually is with this service.
tijs··on Am I An Outlier, Or Are Apple Products No Longer Easy To Use?
He actually needs to switch to Kanji several times a day as he says clearly "I must turn my texts and emails into Kanji ten times a day." The gripe is with the layout of the Kanji keyboard which, looking at that screenshot, is indeed pretty ridiculous.
tijs··on Logins without logins.
right i did not know that, thanks for clearing that up.
tijs··on Logins without logins.
Clover sends a text with a code to the visitor not the other way around.
tijs··on TextDrive is Back
I no longer trust them to offer a similar shared hosting service a) reliably and b) actually lifetime. It was probably never a good idea to finance a company this way and it's certainly not a good idea to spin this off into a new company with zero paying customers but actual real life costs that can no longer be written off as a cost of doing business. How long before this new Textdrive folds? 5 years, 6 months?
tijs··on TextDrive is Back
A story of corporate communication amateur hour; So i have to read on HN that my textdrive/joyent hosting is stopping. Bit pissed i write an email to support that i'd like more time to move stuff and that a refund would be nice. I get a canned reply with a repeat of the email mentioned on HN. Then on their support forums the Joyent president suddenly is all helpful and grants everyone refunds. we'll have to ask/haggle with support about it though. So i email support again quoting their fearless leader. This time the support staff promptly grants me a refund (which i haven't heard or seen anything about since i should add). I'm happy enough with that outcome for now though and start moving all my sites to other hosting options. Fast forward to today (about a week later). Again on HN (still not on that mailing list it seems) i have to read that textdrive is restarting after all (tada!) and we can keep our precious hosting accounts running. Wow, thanks good timing as well. Can i still get my refund and get the f out though?

Note to budding entrepreneurs; don't do this.

tijs··on Pandora and Spotify Rake in the Money and Then Send It Off in Royalties
That would be very interesting. Is this simply not a viable model without raising prices (in the case of Spotify) or are record execs really the fat-cats that we all think they are and would they be able to save themselves by simply being less greedy and taking out a smaller cut.
tijs··on PHP 5.4.6 released
Perhaps 5.4 made some breaking changes so they'll keep updating 5.3 with security fixes and such for a while until it's fair to ask people to upgrade.
tijs··on Thanks to Quora, now you can’t read anonymously
apparently you have to e-mail privacy@quora.com to get your account deleted completely. That in itself is reason to delete your account btw. It speaks volumes of their regard for users and their privacy.
tijs··on Dear Mark Zuckerberg
I do wonder how many people in Facebook actually think of their company as a "business infrastructure provider".
tijs··on Dear Mark Zuckerberg
Yes it was supposed to be an app market on facebook. But since Dalton 'will never write another line of code for social platforms' i assume that ship is not sailing.

How do you reliably check that javascript is turned off without resorting to javascript?

edit: never mind; an img in a noscript tag.

tijs··on Ask HN: Startup CEO Salary
Where is your company based, 180K is probably too much wherever you would be but still; a startup in SF needs higher salaries than one in Austin (or Europe).
tijs··on Twitter Shuts Off “Find Friends” Feature For Instagram
A onetime sponsorship would sort of defeat the point of having members that use and sustain the service though.
