tijs··on This Industry Is Still Completely Ridiculous
So what you're saying is that we actually seem to have learned from our mistakes?
tijs··on Show HN: Gitfs – mount Git repos as local folders
makes sense as a simple deployment tool too i guess? simply mount the stable branch in your 'www' directory and you can push to deploy (for a static files based site at least).
tijs··on Ask HN: Do you know other firms like Valve or GitHub?
Springest in NL (and some other companies too) practice Holocracy

http://devblog.springest.com/holacracy-at-springest-dev-team...

As far as i know the only 'new' management trend that has catched on here.

tijs··on Show HN: Kish Map
What is the idea behind the Kish free zone? Is the idea to experiment with alternative economic models like you sometimes see in china for specified regions? Same government, alternative laws?
tijs··on Show HN: Tiempo – The fastest way to track time and get paid
Sure, earlier payment might very well make it wortwhile. Maybe, if you have validated numbers, that should be part of the pitch on the invoices page? (x% of our customers get paid in x weeks)
tijs··on Show HN: Tiempo – The fastest way to track time and get paid
Let's just say that compared to 0$ for a bank transfer (at least where i'm from) it seems like a bad deal.
tijs··on Show HN: Tiempo – The fastest way to track time and get paid
Is it normal in the US to pay supplier invoices through credit card payments? Nobody would pay 3,9% on amounts of more than a few hundred dollars right? A normal project invoice for say a web studio would usually be well over 10k which means you're regularly paying more than $400 to get a single invoice processed? Am i missing something or do people actually do this? Not trying to be snarky, truly curious.
tijs··on DNS.watch – Fast, free and uncensored
not if your in western europe. it's a german service so i guess it makes more sense if your closer to germany.
tijs··on GoTenna – Send and receive messages even when you don’t have service
from the fAQs i gather that it sends from one gotenna to one or more recipient gotennas only: "Your smartphone will send the message to your goTenna, which will then shoot it out, via long-range radio waves, to the intended goTenna(s). At the other end, the exact same thing happens, in reverse: the recipient goTenna sends your message over BTLE to the smartphone app its paired with."

building an ad-hoc network with these things would be kind of cool though. DIY city networks anyone...

tijs··on OS X Yosemite public beta signup
Love the fog effect. I wonder how many people will notice..
tijs··on Android 4.5: End of Road?
Google cache copy is here, the server seems to have reached it's limits: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://...
tijs··on How I Feel as Young Father Involved in Early-stage Startup
There is no rule that people working at startups need to work more hours than anybody else for the startup to 'be real'. Do yourself a favor and close up shop at 6 and have dinner with your family. Your weekly productivity will go up as your 'restless soul' finds the peace it needs. Your happiness levels will go up and your effective productivity will follow suit.
tijs··on MIT's Scratch Team releases Scratch 2.0 editor and player as open source
My daughter is a bit too young still so i haven't tried it with any actual kids yet, except myself. I liked the cleaner visual style but it might indeed be less clear now..
tijs··on Europe's top court: people have right to be forgotten on Internet
Laws are not binary. A judge would decide whether someone could be considered famous in the context of the case.
tijs··on Europe's top court: people have right to be forgotten on Internet
My local newspapers report of this case mentions that the reason the plaintiff wanted the references removed was because the auction publicized the fact that he had debts at the time which was no longer the case. I would guess there are situations where such facts would be a hindrance in later life when easily surfaced through Google.
tijs··on MIT's Scratch Team releases Scratch 2.0 editor and player as open source
Hardly 'open' but if you're looking for something similar that works nicely on an iPad Hopscotch is also worth a look https://www.gethopscotch.com

Bit more limited than Scratch but the new editing interface they just released works really well.

tijs··on Europe's top court: people have right to be forgotten on Internet
In this case it's pretty specific to someone wanting libelous information removed. If the analogue is a print publication having to retract something it is (almost?) always after a judge has looked at it. If Britney Spears suddenly considered everything ever said about her libelous she would have a tough time convincing a judge of that i would say. Just like celebrities usually have a tougher time getting things retracted now since they are in the public eye more than Joe Average by default.
tijs··on The Return of Upcoming.org by Andy Baio
I was wondering about that. I guess picking the cities would be on a first come, first serve basis... which could get ugly if you find out you can't pick your favorite city -after- you've spent $1000.
tijs··on Raindrop.io – Smart Bookmarks
Is it Pinterest for men?
tijs··on Extend Python 2.7 life till 2020
bullshit. i have several large Django code bases to maintain and all of them could move to py3 if needed if it wasn't for boto. As soon as they are ready porting boto my next projects will all be py3.
tijs··on s3.amazonaws.com certificate revoked
I saw the same thing maybe 5 minutes ago but it has since been resolved it seems.
tijs··on Google Now for Chrome
I got a notification that they were now offering Now in my Chrome browser about two weeks ago. I run the stable channel version.
tijs··on Virtual reality affects men and women differently
Seems to me that if you fix the "shape from shading" issue (for any VR system) everybody's depth perception experience improves. If it's really related to hormones it would make sense that some men have a harder time with these cues than others just like woman would since not all men have the same hormone levels either.
tijs··on Google Now for Chrome
In my experience it's only moderately helpful, and often plain useless, for exactly the reason you mention. It does not handle 'mixed modes' (or whatever you want to call it) at all. I have two places of work and sometimes work from home, but i can only set one location as work. I commute sometimes by bike or walking, sometimes by train, and rarely by car (but it does happen). But; according to Google you can only have one mode of transport. There's probably a pattern to my madness but it does not seem like Google is smart enough to find out (which is hard to believe). For now this is aimed at the american suburbanite soccer mom i guess (and as a, albeit european, semi-suburban dad i'm not even that far from that demographic).
tijs··on Chrome is blocking wired.com
They had a 'technical issue' earlier today it seems:

"WIRED: @Freakonomicss @hoffin205 Yeah, we had a technical issue this morning, but our tech team fixed. Waiting for @googlechrome to clear us"

https://twitter.com/wired/status/452490353283588096

tijs··on Internet.org: A Facebook connectivity lab project
yeah that was it. first time it really mucked up a layout like this for me. Guess that's the downside of hosting your static assets on the facebook cdn :)
tijs··on Internet.org: A Facebook connectivity lab project
same here, looks like this was not release ready yet.. whatever it is.
tijs··on Angular 2.0
Unless they plan to release this 4-5 years from now isn't it a bit optimistic to release something intended to be used in production for IE11 only? For most real-world applications it's kind of nice to be able to support anything with a browser share over 1-2%, with this requirement it places Angular squarely in the 'startups for the tech crowd'-only world.
tijs··on Show HN: My Desk Chair
yup. that and exercising your back and shoulder muscles a bit now and then actually helps your body from getting RSI symptoms in the first place...
tijs··on Show HN: Real-time server monitoring in your browser
I just tried out the main product and while it's easy to setup i ran into snags with the plugins right away. Both redis and postgres (the first two i tried) failed to install and it took a bit of searching to figure out they had their own dependencies. When trying to install those dependencies i ran into issues with compatibility for a fresh ruby install.

Maybe you should concentrate on fixing your own dependency issues before you start pounding on Nagios (https://scoutapp.com/info/nagios_alternative) about the exact same issue.
